I've found a big obstacle is what girls tell each other. E. g. One girl I met told me a guy from SA gave her roommate $2000 at the start of the semester just for talking to him on the phone. Ftr, not suggesting SD's like you don't exist, but you are the exception not the rule and people should keep it in mind when negotiating. The guys aggressively offering allowances, at least where I am, seem to be much more about convincing them to get to the FC a time or two, than sincere about it. What you do is at least realistic.

In terms of them embellishing for their friends, which absolutely happens, I posted the perfect example in this thread a couple of months ago.
