Yeah I hear you, CL and the internet have really fucked up our SW hobby. The other thing I miss is the end of the month ho's. They are the ones that only come out on the last 2-3 days of the month for rent money and are often single moms and very hot. They have been missing for a while too!

[The following is a TRUE story!!!]

During Christmas time, usually at the first week of December, beautiful women who are not SW's would hit the street as providers. Why? Usually they were single moms that didn't have enough money to buy there kids some ultra-expensive toy that they wanted. So being good moms, they would hit the bricks and bring home that money!

The best thing about the "Christmas Ho" is that many of these women were not having "whoopy time", so the kitty kat was ulta T - I - G - H - T! Not to mention that many of those women looked like supermodels. I mean they were very attractive.

I had to pick up a friend of a friend over at midway today, so I decided to to leave early and scope out the scene; hell I had only been in the area twice previously and both times had "company" in my car. So I left downtown got there about 45 minutes before my friend's friends' arrival.

As I said, never previously cruised the area, and I did not expect to see much since it was in the middle of the day. As I was going down I saw nothing except.

As I was going down I saw nothing except a few nice looking black girls that were 6's 7's on a SW scale, but none of them gave me the look back. I was practically yelling out my window because of how early it was.

Then as I got towards the walgreens I saw an old, decrepid body of a white women and knew it was a SW from a mile away. Gave her look, you turned, pulled into walgreens parking lot. I got out, she was already approaching me asking me about my "nice car" from a distance. I didn't have the heart to tell her I wasnt interested so I jsut told her to go and wait for me arond the corner. (it was kinda funny because I must have seen her at least three times back and forth the rest of the cruise.)

Then right before I decide to hang it up and go chill on the hazard lane by midway arrivals, I bang right at archer, then take another right on the very next small side street (didn't get the name) and went all the way back towards either 49th 58th around and took another right onto another small street (this is reisdntial area) and then before I hit cicero on the small side street stood what appeared to be a sexy blonde haired white women with a shopping back, said nordstroms or some shit. As I got closer I realized she was indeed a SW and not as attrctive as id thought from further away, but still an 8 on SW scale.

I parked got out of the car (I do this so I can talk to them, find out if they are le, this is an advantage of mongering this area during the day. I don't reccomend getting out of your car at night).

All right pay attention cuz heres the fucked part of the story. For some twist of luck the first thing I asked her was does she have a number? (mayb cuz I was thinking id call her another time and jsut go to midway). She responds yeah but I only give it to guys I've "done stuff with" so my uncomfy radar goes off and I get in my car. As I am walking I see a white guy in a gold impala reg il plates clean cut drive up to her and talk to her thru his windown in the middle of the road. He only spoke to her for three seconds then swung around and took a right onto cicero heading south, I left and followed right after him, wondering what the fuck just happened and whether or not he was a cop and if I was going to get busted. I jsut headed towards midway thru the busy cicero traffic.

Long story short, fucked up incident, and still don't know exactly what happened.

Mr Tyrs Christmas hookers: I used to have a couple of regulars who told me they made more money around Christmas time and on Christmas day then any time of the year. I have never been mugged, robbed, beaten up or even approached by gangbangers in this neighborhood, and I walk to Petes Market to get my milk at night. Funny the only times I have been mugged, have been on the Gold Coast/Near North Side. Yes, that same, "safe", little area you live in. Yeah, thats where my ex wife was beaten and raped. But dont worry, now that Mayor Daley has moved all the poor people out of Cabrini-Greene and lined the pockets of his developer friends, it must be a safer hood.

I am kind of sterorypical because if I see a neighborhood that is moslty black or spanish, I tend to think it is not the safest. This is just from my experiences. I really shouldnt have said that thought because I know nothing about the neighborhood so I apologize.

However, still have questions.

1) When you say the cops have been hot around there. Do you mean jsut patroling? Or is there any way (obviously yes, but in your opinion) that the chick I saw was a sting or set up. Thats the reason I passed up

2) Do the sws wlak on the the tiny side streets also or just on Cicero.

My guess is that the blond was not LE. Chances are some guy did not like her price and or looks. There many SW's that are hesitant to give their phone #'s out. You could have offered to give her a ride. Your other option would be to park and observe

I got a chance to read Jacksons rules for Street mongering, and I must say they were pretty well written thought out. Eventhough most of it is common sense kinda stuff for experienced mongers. It can really help out newbies.

Sorry for the delay in answering, I was out of town. I really should let someone else answer your questions as I dont pick up streetwalkers that much anymore. For awhile I was a fiend for it, but gas prices, time wasted looking for the few and far between girls, and the possibility of a $30 BJ costing me $1200 in legal fees has pushed me more into Asian apts and backchannel referrals.

Was she a set up? Define "set up". An LE Sting, or just trying to get you back to an apt to rob you. That threat always exists with any girl. I have gone into several apts and wondered if I was going to get hit over the head and robbed. But that was part of the danger seeking adrenaline rush i got from picking up SWs.

From what i have gathered in emails and other postings the cop and vice presense can be heavy at times. I thnk it probably has to do with neighborhood complaints. Anyone remember the guy with the video camera that would record license plates?

Again, I am not activley looking for girls when I am there. If I see them, it is because I see them as I am commuting. They are on 47th, on Archer, on Cicero, on Western, when I see them. If I have seen them on the side streets, it is because they were going somewhere.

Nothing wrong with passing on something. I would have parked and watched her for awhile to see. I too used to get out and look at them up close and offer a ride. I dont think you gave her the opportunity to offer a date. She was being as cautious as you. If you are looking for a sting, drive around. Look for unmarked cars with 2 and 3 guys in it. Look for idling tow trucks. Look for a mobile procesing station if it is a big time operation.

And how timely to see those 22 Rules posted. It probably answers most of your questions. It is wonderful to see all that combined into one document. It took me years to learn all those steps, and there it is, all in one place for all the young kids to see.

I knew too never discuss money with a girl that isn't in your car, but I did not know that you could offer her a "ride", with it being perfectly safe. I remember reading in an out of state post that sometimes the trick doesnt work and they will book you just for suspicion.

Tow truck and unmarked cars are another thing I never knew too look for. I guess if you are being set up for a sting, it is not going to be just one officer around like there was in my case.

"Freakonomics" researcher examines the Chicago's sex trade
Best-selling author's early findings about street-level prostitution draw criticism from local social workers

A two-year study of the economics of prostitution in Chicago found the women were forced to service police officers, worked more during holidays like July 4th and varied pricing based on their customer's race, according to a preliminary paper presented by the researchers.

University of Chicago professor and "Freakonomics" author Steven D. Levitt and sociology professor Sudhir Venkatesh of Columbia University organized a two-year study of street-level prostitution in the Roseland and Pullman neighborhoods. The study, which ended in May, also included Washington Park for about 8 months after police began a crackdown and the regular prostitutes moved their activity 6 miles north.

Although it has yet to be formally published, the study has been read by Chicago aid workers, some of whom dispute its findings on the city's sex trade.


The researchers hired trackers, typically former prostitutes themselves, to follow a sample of about 160 female sex workers and record details of each sex act they performed. Working prostitutes were paid $150 a week to participate in the two-year study.

Street prostitutes reported that about 3 percent of the sex acts they performed were "freebies" given to Chicago police officers to avoid arrest, according to a draft report of the study, which was presented to a packed session last weekend at an annual national economics conference in New Orleans.

According to the paper, full-time prostitutes made on average less than $20,000 a year. If they had a pimp, the women made a little more, even after giving up a 25 percent cut of their earnings. The women reported being beaten about once a month on average.

Fridays were the sex trade's busiest days; Mondays the slowest.

Differences in price

White and Hispanic men were charged more, the study found, while blacks and repeat customers paid less. Seasonal spikes in demand drove up prices -- the study found prices increased 30 percent in Washington Park over the July 4 week -- and brought more women into the market.

Markets in Roseland and Pullman operated differently, the study found. In Pullman, prostitutes worked with one of four pimps, while in Roseland prostitutes worked the streets on their own, according to the study.

Levitt, whose best-selling book "Freakonomics" made him a nationally known economist, declined through a university spokesman to comment and did not want the results published because the paper was still preliminary and incomplete. Venkatesh replied to a Tribune e-mail and also asked that the results not be published.

But details of the research and the preliminary findings have been circulated to aid groups in the city and presented elsewhere, and mentioned on Levitt's Freakonomics blog. The full draft of the paper is on the University of Chicago's Web site, marked "extremely preliminary and incomplete."

Chicago groups working to help women escape the sex trade said they felt the draft paper overall failed to adequately address prostitutes' suffering, seemed inaccurate in spots, and could be misread.

Samir Goswami, associate director of policy at the Chicago Homeless Coalition, said that although the data collected by the researchers was impressive, the study seemed to hold little potential in addressing the problem. He noted that street prostitution is a small fraction of the sex trade. "It's a classic example of an economist trying to tackle a very complicated problem just by looking at numbers," said Goswami, who has read the paper. "It's flawed because the numbers do not explain the social situation these women are in. It's not just a business transaction."

Advocates also said prostitutes are beaten more frequently than reported in the study, and some questioned the findings on pimps, maintaining that the men take a larger cut than 25 percent and that there are in fact pimps in Roseland.

"It just makes me really wonder if they have a full understanding of how pimps work," said Olivia Howard, a former prostitute who is now assistant director of recovery support services for the Haymarket Center, a substance-abuse treatment organization. "... The girls may not call them pimps. It might be their boyfriend, manager or business partner. They're still being exploited."

"I think it's a real dangerous thing to say there's no pimps in Roseland," said Rachel Durchslag of the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation, who read the draft study. "It paints a really warped picture."

Police spokeswoman Monique Bond did not respond to requests for comment on the study's finding that some police officers demand sex from prostitutes.

New training for responders

The city is working on new training for first responders who deal with prostitutes, starting with paramedics, said an official in the Mayor's Office on Domestic Violence. Chicago aid groups said that in this regard, the study's results are unsurprising and perhaps even understated.

"When they drive up on you, it's such a fear factor -- you don't have a choice," said Brenda Myers-Powell, a former prostitute who now works with the Chicago Homeless Coalition and mentors women leaving the sex trade. "Chicago's finest takes its privileges wherever it can. I'm not talking secondhand; I'm talking about what I've experienced."

The study also had disturbing findings about health issues and gave insights into the effectiveness of law enforcement.

The study found that condoms were used in just 25 percent or fewer acts -- unprotected sex seemed to be the starting point for negotiations -- and there was a small price increase for unprotected sex.

Levitt and Venkatesh found that prostitution arrests were concentrated in certain parts of the city -- half were made in just eight of the city's 77 community areas. Neighborhoods near train stations or a major road saw more arrests, as did areas with more families on public assistance.

But arrest records paint an incomplete picture, the draft paper says, not only because police activity ebbs and flows, but because prostitutes in their study were only officially arrested once for every 450 sex acts. Johns were arrested even less frequently. The extra paperwork and concern in neighborhoods about appearing to have an active sex market led to fewer reported arrests, conversations with police suggested, according to the paper.

Only one in 10 arrests -- there are about 3,500 arrests in Chicago each year -- leads to a prison sentence, leading the authors to conclude that "the criminal justice system has a relatively minor impact on prostitution activities."

Goswami and Durchslag said they were trying to arrange a meeting with Levitt. A University of Chicago spokesman said a final version of the paper is expected to be released in April.

Okay, so let me get this straight: two guys, one from the U of C and another from Columbia University, find it necessary to write about low level prostitution? Um, why? I have great respect for both institutions (the schools and the profession for that matter), but, judging from the article, I don't think they really shed any new light on a subject that, pretty much, isn't already common knowledge. Gee, cops take freebies? Ya don't say. Admittedly I was surprised that 10% of arrests lead to prison sentences. Considering the cost of incarcerating someone, I think it's a waste of resources to imprison anyone for being a SW (unless they're spreading a life threatening disease). If the authors, or government, want to attack the "problem", I think they would be better served dealing with the reasons that cause an individual to become a prostitute.

I imagine there's a plethora of reasons, but the reality is that the "problem" will never be solved. I don't understand why an economist is involved with writing a book about a social issue.

Based on my conversations with girls, pimps take more than 25%. Wow, repeat customers get better rates? Hey professors, big surprise. Quantity discounts exist in most businesses.

I'm not surprised that a SW is making, on average, <$20K/year. With all due respect, they're typically not top shelf talent, so they're not going to command the best rates, and perhaps they're not working a 40 hour week. Who knows? Put in a 40 hour week and they may make more.

If you want to look at it from an economic standpoint, it's a supply and demand thing based on the marketplace. If one considers a different demographic, you'll find plenty of service providers who earn six figure incomes. I know a provider who got into the biz because she is a single mother of three. She wants to get out, but feels trapped because she and her family have become accustomed to a lifestyle based on such an income. I suspect it's a vicious circle for service providers on both ends of the spectrum.

Enough of my rant, I'm starting to bore myself. My purpose is to have fun and treat people with respect. If I can enjoy my time with providers, have a few laughs with them and put some money in their pockets, everyone benefits.

The irony is that there are a lot of civilized countries where prostitution is legal. Cross the border into Canada and it's not a problem. Jump the pond to England and it's not a problem, etc. , etc. Hell, go to certain counties in Nevada and it's legal. I'd rather the professors put their heads together in an effort to convince congress that prostitution should be legalized throughout the United States.

Welfare is a social issue. Medicare is a social issue. Social security is a social issue. And politicians are regularly consulting economists about what to do with them. Have you read "Freakonomics"? You should. Good read. Not without flaws, but still interesting.

The study on prostitution is interesting and could be very useful--one possible "solution" to the problem *might* be legalization. But there is definitely an underground economy with prostitution, worthy of academic study.

These guys are amateurs, I've been studying prostitution for over 25 years and I still don't have enough research to publish my findings. I believe that it will take many more years to arrive at a suitable conclusion.
