I'm still relatively new to all of this and have been doing walk-ins at nice for my main activity. Last time I was in, my masseuse told me to call ahead next time. My question is what are the benefits of doing that? Is there something I am missing out on by just walking in?

That has never been my experience. What I actualy think the motivation is a) make you think the above & b) you've proven to be a decent guy and she'd rather see you than be in the lineup and get J. Random. Jerk when he walks in.

To me the added inconvenience of calling ahead has rarely paid off.

(Obviously if the girl who wants you to call is much better than the others the calculus changes since it takes the random element out of the picture).
