A quick bus from the airport will get you to the trolley station, which will take you all the way to the border. On the way back it will drop you right by the convention center. Much cheaper than renting a car, paying for parking, and rushing to drop it off before the conference.

I have no problem bringing luggage across -- often a wheeled bag. A small backpack or duffel is no problem. The point is, there are several good strategies. It really depends on what you are trying to do. The things that tend to not work out include driving into Mexico, parking in unprotected places, not having a passport, venturing away from the safe area around the clubs and being an Ugly American. Here is the point, TJ around HK, that whole area, is as safe or safer than red light districts in the US of A. Cascades is a pretty nice hotel, so staying there is fine, just request an upper floor, as has been suggested, or the noise from the club will be bad. The hotel itself is clean and safe.

I have used Cascades and several of the less desirable hotels around there. There are pickpockets and there are corrupt police, scam artists and the like. Sex for sale is legal and the girls carry health cards. Few speak any English, and that is probably the biggest issue you will face. But I would have more problem walking in a SW area of Los Angeles that Tijuana, as far as safety is concerned.

But, how did you get INTO Mexico without a passport? Because, these days, the Mexican authorities scan the passport and ask why you are going in.

Just wanted to report on my recent excursion south of the border. I started from the Gaslamp district in San Diego on Tuesday late morning by walking over to the trolley. As I stood at the machine purchasing my round trip ticket, a train rolled up. It wasn't the train I need so I didn't pay much attention to it. The doors opened and suddenly I heard some yelling. So does anyone know of anything special happening down in the Zona Norte to take advantage of the US holiday weekend? I was seriously thinking of heading down there this weekend, mainly because I didn't really have anything else planned. I was hopping that it would warm up some by this weekend, but the forecast is predicting low to mid 60's down there, and some possible rain Saturday. Yes there's a couple large pay parking lots near the border entrance. Word of advice though, if you are planning on staying late at night, DO NOT PARK IN THE NEARBY SHOPPING CENTER AT THE BORDER CROSSING! They are SUPER STRICT about policing that shopping center when it comes to parking. If you plan on going across the border during the day, and plan on being back while the stores in that shopping center are still open, then you can get away with it. At night after those stores close, they will start ticketing and towing cars they catch in that lot.

As for the wait, it's dependent on when you try to cross. Getting into Mexico isn't a problem and usually super quick. Coming back across is a different story. It's taken me 15 minutes before, and a hour and half another. I always tell people who are under time constraints, to plan at least a hour to get back across the border. It normally won't take that long, but that's what I always plan.

As for dangerous, well it is Mexico. I've personally only been down into the Zona Norte but I have been thinking about hitting up the beach areas now that it's warmer. When you are in the Zona Norte, you'll quickly notice that there's police EVERYWHERE you go in that area. They are constantly patrolling the street and hanging out on most of the busy corners and by the big clubs. That area is pretty safe because they don't want to scare off the tourists and the money they bring in with them. As long as you use some common sense, don't do anything stupid, stay in the busy areas, and behave yourself, you should be fine. I usually go alone down there, and haven't had any real problems.

Spartan.No line going in to Mexico and I showed my passport but they didn't stamp it either time I was there recently. Both times they asked what I was doing and how long I was staying. One time I said I had a date and was meeting her for dinner. The other time is said, "I'm going to Hong Kong and getting laid." The officer laughed and said, "At least you are being honest," and handed me my passport and waved me through. Get real. They know why we are there. I took a cab both times. I used to walk but the cab is just more convenient. I have never felt any danger. In fact, I think it is safer than many SW areas of most big cities in the US of A. I have never wandered out of the Zona. No reason. The last time I was there I counted nearly 100 street girls in the block around Adalitas / Hong Kong, and most were drop dead gorgeous. I wear a fashionable shirt and jeans and am so white I could never pass for Mexican. But there are many, many (mostly young) American guys there, especially on weekends.

Don't overthink it. Prostitution is legal and more or less cheap and everyone knows it.

For all the times I've crossed into TJ and back, they have never once stamped my passport book. If you can, take a Uber (yes the Uber app will work in Mexcio) to the Zona Norte instead of a cab. Most cabs will charge you like $10-$15 for the ride, and Uber normally charges me about $3-$5. Be careful about using your smartphone while in TJ. Depending on your provider, you might run the risk of being charged a extra "international travel" usage fee if you use your phone while in TJ. I checked with my AT&T plan, and my plan (I have the unlimited everything plan) did cover usage in TJ with no problems. A buddy of mine who went with me one time, found a surprise fee on his next cell phone bill because his plan (I don't know who he uses) didn't cover usage across the border.

I want to point out that some of internet escort girls won't meet you at some of the hotels in the Zona Norte. Especially at the Hong Kong hotel, or any of the ones right by it. The main reason being that they trying are to be discreet about prostituting themselves and they don't want to be seen in that area. Also if you are getting a over night room somewhere, and planning on bringing a girl to the room. When you check in, make sure to tell them that there will be a second person in the room with you later. I had my passport and offered it, but to no avail, I was stuck in the "room. " Here is the deal, I was the only one in there with two border patrol officers doing nothing. They let me sit there for 15 minutes or so, I guess to teach me a lesson, I don't know. That room seats a good 50 people, so I am guessing if there were a bunch of people in that room I could have sat there for hours. Once I was called up it took 30 seconds to clear me, along with getting a lecture. As soon as I got to my room in SD I registered the damn card.

So, yeah, you can probably go both ways without a passport, but it might be painful. No issue with passport going in, no line ever for Sentry line coming back. Why would you do it any other way?

My first visit to Tijuana was many years ago. Then a streetwalker quoted me $100 US and I decided I could not afford it. I have gone down several times in the last two years and really enjoyed myself. I've had good luck with mileroticos as well, but as FanService mentions you need to be careful. It is like the Mexican Backpage, so there are scammers and B&S bitches for sure. NR.You can use dollars or pesos. It doesn't matter. You can change dollars into pesos at any number of money changing places in San Ysidro before crossing the border. If you decide to use dollars, don't go down with a lot of large bills and I would avoid using atms in Mexico. Don't expect to pay a taxi driver with a 100 dl bill. All bars in the zona will have change for large bills. If your new to getting down to the zona I would avoid walking, especially a night. Cross the border and take a taxi. They're everywhere and will do the 5 minute drive for 5 dls. Tip them a dollar. So for 6 bucks down and 6 bucks back you won't have to take a chance on getting lost or worse. As far as how much your going to spend, that all depends. I probably wouldn't go with less than 300 dls and if your going to be running multiple girls up at HK or AB, you'll need more. I'm a regular so I stay away from those places. The zona is very safe. Once outside that 2-3 block radius is a different story. Stay inside the zona and you will not have issues. Do not get really drunk where it's noticeable. Be aware of your surroundings! I would not buy drugs here on my first trip either. Even pills or a little weed might bring unnecessary problems. NR.If you're just going to the zona and sticking to the tourist-centric bars, it's very easy and safe. For all intents and purposes, if it's your first trip and you're going solo, just stick to the street that the taxi will drop you off at (Calle Coahuila) in front of HK. This short street. Going from west to east and you'll be dropped off on the west end. Has a very popular taco cart, then Hong Kong, then Las Chavelas (you can skip this one on your first rodeo), then a locked up church with probably a beggar or a mariachi band playing music in front of it, then Adelitas, then Gloria Bar (you can skip this your first rodeo), then a very popular fish taco cart at the end of the street. If you are the type to keep your wits about you, you'll also have no problems going to Chicago Club (you'll clearly see it and the guys inviting you to go there when you're by the fish taco cart) or Tropical Bar (directly across the street from Hong Kong).

If you're going down every single night next week, I'd say just do the two big ones (Hong Kong, Adelitas) on Monday to get the gist of how TJ works. The constant people asking for handouts, the masero games, how much money you want to spend once actually there, etc. $5 is enough for a couple of tacos and that's all you'll need to eat if it's just a few hours an evening. Monday is also the slowest night of the week which makes it an easier night to see how the girls operate. Expect to pay $6 for every drink you buy and $9 for every drink you buy a girl. If you like to spend a lot of time with her before pulling the trigger, that's a lot of $9 drinks you're forking up. Room I think is $16 a session (I always stay there so I don't know the actual per-30 minute-rate) and the girls will accept anywhere between 60-100 . Lower end for Adelitas and higher end for HK. I'd never pay $100 but so many ask that now that it seems that is a popular donation.

Anyone that offers you drugs (and a lot of them will), just say no. Anyone offering to be friendly, politely decline (unless it's clearly another group of gringos inside one of the bars having fun. I'm talking more of a solo person, especially out on the street). If someone other than a chica is asking too many questions, just let them know your friend is upstairs with a girl or you're walking back to your friends now. Newby-ism is easily seen, and a solo newby can be a scam target. Not a violent scam. Just a somehow get money out of you scam.

Until you have a feel for the place, take a taxi or Uber from the border to the Zona. Just tell the guy "Hong Kong" and hand the guy $5 when you get there. Yes the experts will tell you to pay with pesos and it's only $2 or that you should haggle with the guy, but it's only $5. Just pay and be done. Pay for everything in dollars unless you are really good with math or are really familiar with currency conversion and aware of prices. Everyone works in dollars in the zona anyway. Even the bars set prices in dollars and their peso price fluctuates with the exchange rate, so sticking with dollars won't screw you.

How much will you spend? How much do you want to spend? You could roll into Chicago Club, pick a girl, take her upstairs for 30 minutes and walk out having paid $85 -- $60 (girl), $15 (room), and $10 cab back and forth. Or you can sit in a bar and buy drinks all night long, flirting with girls and buying $9 ficha drinks for 15 minutes of attention until you decide on which one you will take. When I go I plan on $300 per night for a room of my own, two trips upstairs, drinks, fichas, and miscellaneous tips. If you are a big drinker it could be more. If you are a big watcher it could be less.

If you really want to save some money, head all the way through Hong Kong and out the back door into what's called "the alley". It's a real street, with storefronts and stuff, so don't be scared by the name. The street is lines with street girls who will quote you $20 for 20 minutes, plus $5-6 for the room. Some of them are as pretty as any girl in a club, and can be very sweet. But that rate will be for them to pull down their pants and for you to stick it in them (covered, of course) in one position. If you want them to get nude, suck you (covered), and switch positions, they will add on enough that the total will come close to a bar girl's rate. But it can still be fun to walk the alley and look at who is available.

SG's always have been known to just get in the room, take off their bottoms and let you hit it in one position. Kind of a quick session for cheaper than what you would get from a bar girl. Recently took the plunge to try out TJ. It was not disappointed at all. Stayed in a hotel near HK for a few nights with friends. We would walked to HK to fuck a hot girl before breakfast. Had taco. I've heard mixed stories on people using a US license to cross the border. I personally rather not risk it, and use a passport to get in and out of TJ. Out of the dozens of times I've gone, not once have they ever stamped my passport book. The only person I normally have to show it to is the US security guards getting back into the US. Most of the time I can just walk straight into Mexico and only have to stop for the x-ray machine if I brought overnight bag with me. I think maybe 2 or 3 times did they have a security person on the Mexican side who stopped me and asks me why I'm going into Mexico. I just tell them I'm going to the Hong Kong club, and they just tell me to behave and stay out of trouble and that's it.

As for money, that all depends on what you go after. A street girl can cost you $20-$30 for a 10 minute quickie, but there's normally a $5-ish room fee, and you need to tip the guy a couple dollars who cleans the room after your done. Club girls can cost you about $100-$125 for a hour, plus room fees if you're not staying at the hotel connected to the club. I also never get mexcian pesos and pay with everything in USD. Most places in the Zona Norte will take USD, and some places will actually prefer USD over the peso. You may end up paying a little more, but I don't want to worry about having to deal with the left over pesos after I'm done.

Street girls 20.00, room 5. 00.Weekdays daytime you shouldn't offer anything over $60 and only pay $80 if you REALLY want to fuck her (or for negotiated services like BBBJ). Even in Hong Kong you can get $60 during the day for all but the hottest. The room is $19 at Hong Kong, a bit less at the other clubs. Monday-Wednesday you can get a room for the whole day at the Adelitas hotel for $20, so that's a nice perk if you plan on taking up those girls. Just got back from my second trip to TJ and had one of the best nights of my life. Fo Realz. I'll give you the low down and also give you some tips if you're thinking about going. After my first trip, I immediately planned my second, and now I'm immediately planning my third this coming November. So my night started by flying in to San Diego, I landed around 8:30, got a rental car, and got to San Ysidro just in time to park, get my money exchanged and make it to PedWest before they closed at 10. I like to park in the neighborhood off Sipes Ln. It's FREE, it feels secure, I have never had a problem (although I wouldn't park more than 2 days there). It is also accessible any time, day or night, so no matter what time I'm arriving I can park there.

I handle my cash exchange to pesos at the currency exchange right outside pedwest. They don't always have the BEST rates, but they're competitive and you can beat the convenience factor, and theyre open till midnight. For those coming in and crossing late night, PedWest stays open till 10 pm, and PedEast is open till 2 am. You cannot cross into mexico from 2 am-5 am. You can return from Mexico to the US 24 hours / day.

If you are coming from the east coast I usually fly out of Boston or NYC, the best rates seem to be to fly out on Saturday & return on Monday or Tuesday. I get about $350 RT on Southwest.
