Great weather on Sunday prompted me to head over to Independence Ave rather early in the evening. I got to the stroll about 10:00 and was stunned to see cop cars everywhere. Between Paseo and the Sonic I probably saw eight cruisers, half had their lights going. I was spooked. So spooked I passed up a sexy young latina with short hair walking about 50 feet in front of her pimp behind the Apple Market. Other than her, I didn't see any sure things working, although there was a lot of foot traffic. The nice weather brought out a lot of people.

I made a few loops that kept me off the main stroll for a bit, then threw in a jaunt down to the US-40 stroll. Decided against a trip down Prospect and Troost and headed back to the Indep stroll. I saw a blonde woman in a full length white fur coat just east of the 7-11 who was clearly working, but as I passed she looked pretty haggard. It was also pretty obvious where she was standing.

After a few more big loops, though, I didn't see anyone else out and decided to go back for the blonde. I approached from 6th and she hopped right in. She wasn't as old as I thought -- the coat made her look older. I'll bet she was under 30, although she had some miles on her. Said her name was Lorie (maybe "Glory") and was very cool. I'd pick her up again in a minute.

Saturday, I had a wild experience, usually I have to spend quite a bit of time looking before I spot a gal. Saturday I hit Independence from the west heading east, for some reason I went east much farther than I normally do. Around Oakley street I noticed a good looking blond. Good advice! I usually turn around at the Sonic, but occasionally go as far as the BP. Rarely have I passed the McDonald's at Hardesty. Every time I go down that way I think how the area should be perfect for streetwalkers, but have only ever seen two or three east of the Sonic that I suspected were working. I've lived here, right on the Avenue for about 5 years and know many of these girls. Chris, (who I call "Kissy Chris") my favorite. I get a discount rate from her. A walk with a former prostitute, after her five-year sentence by David Martin

Every once in a while, someone in public office decides that the city's prostitutes need managing.

In 1918, the director of the Kansas State Board of Health complained to Tom Pendergast about the number of soldiers who contracted venereal disease while on leave in Kansas City. Pendergast promised health exams and jail sentences in an effort to calm the health director, who threatened to make Tom’s town off-limits to Camp Funston personnel.

In the mid-1970s, Mayor Charles B. Wheeler declared war on prostitution. Streetwalkers mounted a counterattack. A prostitute who went by the name Ocelot filed a civil-rights lawsuit, arguing that the city's new solicitation ordinance was vague and arbitrary.

Bob Beaird, the Jackson County prosecutor from 1999 to 2002, brought felony charges against a few persistent offenders. A felony charge came with a prison sentence of up to five years.

Beaird, now a judge of the Circuit Court of Jackson County, says the get-tough initiative caused a stir on Independence Avenue and other streets where prostitutes worked. "I said, 'Let's see if we can put more pressure on them,'" Beaird tells me.

The Prosecutor's Office didn't keep a record of the five-year sentences it sought and obtained. I get the sense that it wasn't a large number. Off the top of his head, Beaird was able to remember the name of one woman. That offender, now age 41, is currently on parole for second-degree robbery.

Another "known prostitute," as the police refer to a veteran hooker, received a five-year sentence in 2002.

I recently enjoyed a $16.42 date with her.

"It's Christmastime," the voice on the phone said. "I need some money."

I had found the phone number in an arrest record. I called, on the chance that a prostitute caught in the felony-charge dragnet might want to talk about the experience. To my surprise, the number worked.

She agreed to meet. But she had demands. She wanted money and didn't want her real name in the paper.

Confidentiality I can do. Cash is another matter. The Pitch doesn't pay sources. So we bargain. I agree to buy Ginger (a pseudonym she would later choose) a few drinks and something to eat.

I pull up to a house in south Kansas City that has been cut up into apartments. A middle-aged woman who outweighs me by 50 pounds is standing on the porch.

First stop is a convenience store on Prospect Avenue. Ginger requests Bud Light Lime. I buy two 22-ounce bottles. For lunch, I suggest Gates. "Oh, Lord," Ginger says, "Gates is too rich for my blood."

As I drive, Ginger establishes herself as a difficult interviewee, the kind of subject who asks three questions for every one posed to her. She wants to know how I got her number. She wants to know why The Pitch wants to talk. She wants to know if I'm a vice cop.

Eventually, Ginger begins to relax a little. A funny, intelligent woman begins to emerge. Still, my new friend operates on a different frequency. She mentions that she has bipolar disorder.

"I love rap songs," Ginger says, fiddling with the radio dial. "My favorite rapper is Snoop Dogg. D-o-o-gg." Ginger says she also likes Barbra Streisand, Madonna and Michael Jackson. "My favorite is Britney Spears. If I was young again, I'd want to be like her. She's a bad *****. She made that man she had the babies with ... she made him go home."

Ginger says she grew up in the projects. Her mother worked at the post office. She says she got into prostitution while attending the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She liked the money. She thought of becoming a teacher, but eventually streetwalking became a career.

"There was money in this town in the '70s, honey," she says.

Ginger worked the main corridors of prostitution — Main Street, Troost Avenue, the West Bottoms. She was a pioneer of sorts. "See, I was one of the first bitches to start working on Independence Avenue, in '81."

Ginger worked alone. "I never had a pimp. A pimp is a poor man. Sell his ass, just like I sell mine."

For protection, she relied on her wits. She left for Oklahoma City when, in 1988, the bodies of prostitutes who worked Independence Avenue began to turn up in the Missouri River.

Violence was a constant threat. "When Terry Blair [a serial murderer captured in 2004] was out here killing the prostitutes, I wasn't getting in the car," Ginger says. "I'd get in the car with old men. Well, shit, I ain't no motherfucking fool. This is my hometown. I was born and raised here. The serial killer wasn't an old man."

Ginger says she traded exclusively in oral sex. "I didn't have intercourse, just blow jobs. I used condoms. I put a rubber on and get busy." For her, the plague of the '80s wasn't AIDS — it was crack. Ginger says she didn't use hard drugs. But crack addictions led other prostitutes to drop their prices to $5 and $10.

"Prostitution used to be a big business in this town," Ginger says. "Since crack come out, it's no money. A person might as well get a Social Security check or go to the soup kitchen or get a job. There's not no money in this town since crack came out." Ginger holds prostitutes with cocaine addictions in low esteem. She calls them "crackitutes."

We stop at a house near 31st Street and Prospect. Then we head to the Gates on Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard. Ginger asks for beef on a bun with fries. I'm ordered back into the restaurant when Ginger discovers that there's no barbecue sauce in the bag.

Ginger is generally respectful of the police officers who arrested her more than a dozen times. Her temper flares when I mention that, in the course of researching her criminal background, I learned people knew her by name in the areas she worked. A former assistant prosecutor told me that parents used to complain about having to shield their children's eyes while walking them to and from the bus stop. Upon hearing this, Ginger curses at the urban gentrifiers who bought "them mansions in Hyde Park."

But her anger fades quickly.

"You can't get mad at people because they don't want that shit in their neighborhood, and they got kids. I ain't mad. I did it to myself. It's over. I'm free. I ain't in no trouble now. And I'm going to leave it like that."

After receiving the five-year sentence in 2002 ("I cried," she says), Ginger spent several months in the Chillicothe Correctional Center. "I got along with everybody. I didn't have no enemies, you know. I worked and I got myself together. When I was [put on parole and] ready to go home, I went to my favorite correction officers and I talked to them and I said goodbye. And I didn't go back."

Not to a state facility, at least. One spring afternoon in 2006, Ginger offered a blow job to an undercover officer at 25th Street and Prospect. She pleaded guilty and was ordered to serve 30 days at the Municipal Correctional Institution.

Ginger says she no longer works the streets. A man she describes as "a friend in the country" helps her out from time to time. "I've been a hustler all my life, but I'm through," she says. "Now, if somebody wants to give me a gift, I'll take it. But straight-out walking the streets? I just pray to God I'm through. It's not worth it."

The afternoon gives way to darkness. We end up back at the convenience store on Prospect. The bargaining begins anew. I relent and dig $5 out of my wallet.

"OK, give me a few more dollars for another beer, and I'm getting out," Ginger tells me.

"No. I gave you $5."

"Well, shit, I've got to put this in church!" Ginger says, cackling.

A few weeks after saying goodbye to Ginger, I call the city's vice unit. A sergeant tells me that officers working in the city's Central Patrol Division made 176 prostitution arrests in 2008.

Seriously, you won't find anything reliable in KC for extras. As always, YMMV. Some people have reported extras at The Show, on the east side, during the day shift on weekdays. If you can head west to Topeka there is the Trop 56 there is usually someone there who can take care of you.

Other than that, you either need mad skills or deep pockets to score extras in KC clubs.

Was in KC Friday night with some time to cruise. Spent a few minutes making passes up and down Independence. After a couple of tours I spoted a real good looking BSW east of the apple market. I figured that the warm weather (and the end of the month) would bring out the ladies, so I took a drive to the Independence stroll on Wednesday night around midnight. I guess every other hobbyist had the same thoughts as me, because the streets were hopping with guys cruising for tail.

Sadly, the women were nowhere to be found (or they were being picked up too fast to be seen). I cruised for over an hour and saw a total of four girls that I was sure were working. Part of the problem is that there were a ton of people on the streets, and I saw a few women who I couldn't confirm because they didn't give the look or they were with a group of people.

As I was driving past Brooklyn I saw a gorgeous girl, young blonde and thin, walking alone. I guess he was still waiting. I headed to the other end of the strip to see what was up (nothing). Then on my return I saw the same girl walking back along Independence towards the BP, again with her phone to her ear. As I passed the gas station, planning to pull in and wait for her, the same truck was in the parking lot! I kept going and pulled over to watch. She walked in to the BP lot and got in the truck and they drove off -- this was probably 15 minutes after I first saw her. Very frustrating!

I saw one girl at Admiral and Forest who was bundled up like it was 20 degrees out, with her hood pulled tight around her face, so I didn't even slow down. I also saw Chris behind the Apple Market. She's a tall thin blonde with a great body who gives good service and is actually fun to talk to. Circled the block and she was gone. Considered that a sign and headed home.

On the way I passed through the KCK strolls in the West Bottoms and Riverview. Not a soul out at all. Strange, since the KCMO strolls were so busy.

I had a little extra time Saturday while in KC. I wasn't really interested in picking anyone up, just thought I would see what was available. Around noon I made about four passes up and down independence and did not see any working gals. One I thought was possible but her eye contact left no doubt she wasn't working. I saw several mongers but it didn't look like anyone was getting any so to speak.

I went down troost with the same luck. Tried south prospect and just about had to laugh my head (big one) off. There were bsw crawling all over the place. Just don't look to close because I don't think any of them had tits or pussies. I have never seen so many TVSW in one place at one time. There must have been a convention of them in town. It is sufficient to say I didn't slow down or stop. I did see one or two that were fairly good looking BSW who were for sure gals. None of them would have been to tempting unless I was in a real hurt.

To be honest I go more for White or Hispanics it's not that I am racist, it just seems to me my experiences over the years has shown that White or Hispanics are more willing to go the extra so to speak. Independence Avenue from Paseo to Hardesty (plus a block or two on either side depending on where along the stroll). Greatest concentration between Benton and Myrtle (the so-called Apple Market area).

Prospect Avenue from 18th to 39th

Troost Avenue from 18th to 39th

I went out for my first time sunday. I went south on prospect from 18th street. I saw a girl sit on the bus stop I didn't know if she was so I passed her up and came back around and she was gone. Jinga you are in the right part of town, what time of day were you cruising, if it is daytime I would say your best bet would be the "Avenue"; Prospect & Troost can be solid but I would say better luck the farther into the evening you get on those two strolls. Yesterday afternoon there were 4-5 girls working the Avenue area with 2 of them worthy of a ride. You are right about Troost around 40-50(approx.) street once the sun goes down there are usually a small group of retired NBA power forwards trying to intimidate you into picking them up, not very appealing but must be to some because they are always out in the same area can't believe LE don't run them off I guess they figure they scare real criminals off, good luck and share the intel.

To be honest the car I drive makes me a "target" for a robbery going down troost/prospect so I can't do that route (maybe need to pick up a clunker) and I really don't like going "hunting". Did you try the Independence stroll? I wrote in the post right before yours: "Independence Avenue from Paseo to Hardesty (plus a block or two on either side depending on where along the stroll). Greatest concentration between Benton and Myrtle (the so-called Apple Market area)." These are about 50/50 split between black and white providers.

Is their anywhere with latina or asian?
If you really want latinas you can also add in St. John Ave between Van Brunt and Belmont. Not many out there, but those that are tend to be latinas.

You can also try Highway 40 between Manchester Trfwy and Sterling. Mostly white, but some latinas. They are pretty scarce down there though. I haven't seen a girl on that stroll in weeks.

Since I've changed jobs, I'm down in the bottoms a lot more than I used to be, and am able to see what's there to be seen early in the morning, and in the afternoon.

I have a road trip planned for the 3rd week in May and am in the planning and research phase. I am going to post this in multiple cities and states to make it easy. If anyone has a recommendation for cities on this trip please feel free to chime in. I have tried to break it down by area's I will be over the course of a week.

Here is the itinerary for the work / hobby trip:

Leave Minneapolis with stops (W=work H=Hobby, WH=Both) Sioux Falls, SD (H), then Springfield, MO (WH), Branson, MO (W), Lake of the Ozark, MO (W), St. Louis, MO and Centerville, IL (WH), Springfield, IL (H), Moberly, MO (W), Quad Cities, IA (H). This is where I need to decide if I head for Chicago suburbs or towards Des Moines. Leaning towards Des Moines and save the Chicagoland "work" trip for later in the summer. So opportunities in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines on the table as well. I have already been RTFF in these areas to try to figure out the best bang for my time and money in each area.

Sioux Falls- Asian gal from STG I have seen a couple of times already. She is good and will be the first stop.

Sioux Falls to Springfield, MO. May hit something in Sioux City, IA as it look like I will be going right thru. Green in Sioux City is a maybe. Omaha seems like a bust so will recharge the batteries on way to Springfield. I have very limited experience in Kansas City area so may just travel on unless there is a good AMP that is easy in and out.

Springfield, MO- Hong Kong for sure to try to catch the elusive "Kay" working. HK is always a sure thing and super easy. Have a few independents numbers as well. May spend a couple days here with work and a quick run to Branson or Lake of the Ozark and land back in Springfield to stay. Usually take I-44 up to St. Louis, MO, but have never been in the SE Missouri area. No idea if there is anything worth checking out in that quadrant, but if someone knows I would take a different route to Southern Illinois.

St. Louis, MO / Washington Park, IL- Probably hit one of the IL side spa's in Centreville. They are not great most of the time, but every once in a while is a win. These AMP's just make me laugh every time after a visit. Unless you have been to them, it is impossible to explain. Last time I was down I saw, Blue at Fuji (I think, I always get them confused being so close together and shared parking lots). She was an okay time, but when finished and cleaning up, she was at the far side of the room with her back to me taking a SW shower with the wet rag. Well, goll-dang if she didn't look like a 50 year-old Asian dude from the back! Kind of freaked me out for the rest of the day.

Springfield, IL- From reading the forum, it is looking like this is the Mecca of the Midwest for AMP's. I went to one (Warm or Cozy?) last fall and had a good time. It seems that all the AMP's here are pretty good. If anyone would care to give them a ranking I would be grateful. Won't have the time or funds to hit them all on this trip, but that may be another trip as well.

Quad Cities / Moline, IL- I usually stop at Rose in Moline. I am inclined to try a new joint this trip. I have been meaning to the last few times, but Linda is good so I usually fall back to the tried and true when I am down there. I feel like I should try Island or Asian in Milan. Would like to see Tattoo Tit at some point.

CR and Des Moines, IA- I will probably skip CR and just head to Des Moines. Like to hit Hull Ave. For some fun. Any place else in the area good? I have the number from a lady that was in Ankeny that I will reach out and see if she is still in the area. Had some limited fun with her about a year ago.

Back to Minneapolis. $400 for the rental car and 2400 or so miles, $2000 for hobby funds to start. A bunch of memories I can only tell guys I don't know. Priceless!

Thanks for indulging in a long read, and if after reading, you can offer any suggestions I woud really appreciate it. I will post a follow up late May with a re-cap of how the trip went. I have done a handful of these type of trips in the past, but the COVID got in the way the last couple of years. Really had fun on a couple of trips to Florida and Arizona. Looking forward to the "road" again.
