You'll pretty much need a paid membership for at least a month. I usually develop enough contacts in a paid month that I can shut down my account after other means of contact are exchanged. When those have all run dry--usually somewhere in the year range--I start fresh with a new account.
I've found that, as with most "dating" sites on the internet, that the majority of contacts are fakes, flakes, or pros exploring a new venue. I'd say I run about a 10-20% conversion rate for a meet & greet, and at least half of those pan out into at least one encounter in private between consenting adults. You can either nurture the relationship into an ongoing one (which I prefer) or look for one-timers depending on your personal desires.
Usually, I've found SA to be cheaper than pros, typically less mechanical, and frequently much more enjoyable. Whether it's worth it or not depends on your expectations and your ability to separate the good from the bad.
In the parlance, you're looking for a "pay per meeting" arrangement rather than an allowance. While I've found an allowance to be more up-front expensive, I've usually found that I've gotten many more sessions with the allowance than I would have with a pro.
Watch out for sob stories, Golden Pussy Syndrome, and requests for money up front, keep your personal info private (you're a hobbyist, so you know this anyway), and be familiar with Backpage so you can spot the girls who advertise in both places.

As another resource, go to the Richmond, Virginia forum and look under their SeekingArrangement thread. They have FAQ's and thousands and thousands of pages of input from people all over the country.
In general, another thing I'd say is that it's a lot of work. If you're looking for a pro experience and approach it like you're dealing with pros, you're going to spend more time, money and effort than you would otherwise. The pro girls on there routinely get more from naive guys on SA than they get from their BP ads and are paying 2 x for pros.
If you want girls that aren't pro's and don't mind a lot of time investment, it's a no brainer. If you want a supply of hourly rate gals it's not the most efficient way to do it in my view, but a few of those girls are on there. If that's what you want, I'd just email all the girls on the site and some will say yes though the vast majority will not respond at all.

Have you tried the free account yet? The free version gives you a few free message attempts, if I recall. They usually also offer a discount for the first month of paid service.
I haven't paid yet, but am contemplating doing so. Some of the guys here will pay for a month, make several initial contacts, then revert to unpaid.
It seems like a fertile field, especially if you look beyond the GPS Homecoming Queen types.

It is important to note, based on the other posts in this thread right now, that you should NEVER have any discussion of specifics on the SA site itself- it violates their TOS and they will kick you off if there is much discussion at all of time, money, or time+$. Do any and all of that on another venue. And, my personal recommendation, I am sure seconded by my bowl brother on here, Tom. , is that you should defer this discussion for as long as possible. It's the slow, cheap way. I am working a POT who has never brought up $, has graciously accepted a few free coffees and gift cards, and is dying to get to the FC w / me. She's a pretty smart 19 YO, I am more than thrice her age.

And if you happen to hook a newbie and you've set hourly rates and stuff in advance, you've probably screwed yourself and worsened the experience. I had a fun, pretty 20 yo newbie college student that used to drive an hour to meet me and would usually stay for 3 or 4 hours, and that was for what pros usually get for a rushed hour. That is an extreme example but I almost always spend at least an hour and a half or two hours with them if I like them, they basically leave when I'm done.
In years on there the only time I've ever even brought up time is when I was worried that the girl was more a UTR than an amateur, and I brought it up to be clear that I did NOT want a rushed hourly situation with a fixed time. Never talk in terms of hours or hourly rates on there. JM2 C.

At that time it would let you send a few messages, but not read any replies. If I tried to put contact info in the message the whole thing would get replaced with a leering generic note, "You caught my attention. Are you interested in an arrangement?
If the company had been a little less tight-assed I think they would have made a better first impression to a new user.

Pretty Good Time!

Here is what I have done, it is a little convoluted and costs a few more dollars, but makes no direct connection back to me in the event that the site is ever compromised.
1. Get a prepaid OneVanilla card from Wal-Mart for about $95.
2. I have two different dummy PayPal accounts setup.
3. I add the prepaid card to one of the accounts and then do a transfer to the other account. You'll lose a few bucks for fees, but will still have enough for the subscription.
4. Pay using PayPal balance on the other account.
It has worked great for me. I have tried just paying once I add the card to my PayPal account, but haven't had great success doing it that way.

Thanks in advance for your input.Go with SA, the Secret Benefits pricing structure is insane. You basically can message 10 girls on benefits for what a month on SA goes for. Secret Benefits apparently has a little less BS and they're slightly more likely to reply b / c they get less messages but they don't have nearly the number of girls to choose from. The difference is in a month on SA you could contact 100 potentials versus 10 on SB and probably your conversion rate to the FC is not that much different. SA has more BS but a lot more opportunities and better value. Half the SB girls are also on SA BTW so it's not even a unique talent pool they have.
Also, go to the Richmond SA thread, that's the ultimate handbook for this, including an FAQ. Use that to educate yourself on how to go about to have success and avoid being scammed and taken for a ride.

Was on Secret Benefits, connected with "32 year old single mom" who used the name Nanette in her texts to me outside of SB. Profile said she lived in Memphis. Texts started well enough. From Vancouver, young son, lived with granny. Artist (made jewelry and sculptures). Halfway through the day (roughly 10 or so get to know you texts) she asked for "help" ($550 to help with art supplies). Wasn't shocked, but surprised for money grab so soon (she PROMISED to pay me back, it wasn't part of the "normal" deal. She was in a bind, etc). I asked her to send a non-nude selfie holding up my name handwritten on a piece of paper. Man, things turned hilariously funky. She sputtered out texts about trust and not being like other girls, she wouldn't hurt me, etc. I stuck to my guns and late in the day "she" sent me a terribly photoshopped bathroom selfie of a model where the mobile phone had been erased (horribly) in an attempt to look like a piece of paper with my name and today's date written in only what can be described bad microsoft paint handwriting. It was atrocious. The accompanying text said she did it for me and for the chance or our relationship working out. I'm still laughing. Mind you, this all happened in the span of 3 or 4 hours.
When I was able to get to my computer, I reverse searched the phone number and it was a New Jersey land line number, go figure.
I reported it to SB and soon after "her" page was gone (don't know if from my reporting, or just the scammer knew they were busted). I was going to copy / paste the bio, but it was removed too quickly.
I thought I would still report it here assuming the scammer will create a new account, and you all can be wary of a NJ phone number.
