I know this is partly my own nostalgia and naivety, but the dancers seemed to be having more fun back in the 90's. They made good money, and if they liked you, they'd just hang out. There was a girl who came over from San Francisco to work the booths at Aaxtion Video and she stayed instead if going back to SF with the rest of the girls she came with. They always have a sob story. "Hey, can you buy me a drink? I need to make my quota. " "Hey, can you get a lap dance, I need money to get an Uber home. " Even the waiters seem to be really aggressive in making those drink sales. And the owners are always giving their customers the side eye.

They have, what we call in sales, commission breath. Maybe it's because now the kind of guys who would have gone to a strip club now has easy access to providers, so why bother with girls that are just going to tease? And the girls haven't seen to figure out they could work less hard for more money, if they just were ok with transactional sex. Or maybe they just can't cross that line.

The place now where I see that kind of happiness that you showed up is when I go to a regular indie escort or massage parlor. Now, I realize it's because a lot of these girls make good money. So of course they're happy to see you, seeing as how you're contributing to their next handbag or car payment.

It's just sad the strip clubs I had so many fond memories of are now just husks.

I started going to Femme Nu in my senior year of high school in the early 90's. You could get in if you were under 21, you just couldn't drink. The old guy who worked the door didn't do math too well and didn't figure out I was 17. Or maybe he didn't care. First time I went there my classmate told me to keep my eyes on the floor when I walked in the first time because if I didn't I'd just be stunned. Of course I didn't and yes, the sights froze me in my tracks.

My go-tos to start when I was 18 were Club Rose (a guy I graduated with was a bouncer there), the Wildhorse Showroom (because they brought in porn star feature dancers and it was pretty much the only place at the time that did lap dances) and Pure Platinum (later Deja Vu; it was a hard, over-21 club but I would go with the Club Rose crew because I knew the bouncer and the PP door guy assumed I worked with them). I hit up the private show booths at Aaxtion Video a lot too.

When I turned 21, Rock-Za got added to the mix (they were a hard over 21 club) and on a blue moon, Exotic Nights and Saigon II. Later Fantasy Island and I was a regular there. I loved that place. Kind of crappy that the owner was pretty much the cause of the long, slow decline of the rest of the clubs by whining about why he was getting fined for lap dancing.

I do remember that whole block on Keeamoku where Wal-Mart is now was nothing but strip clubs and massage parlors.

Those were the days. Like CheapCharlie said, fingering and eating girls out on stage wasn't a rarity. And this was with hot girls. Hot white girls. Hot local girls. Hot girls in general. A stack of $20 in ones when you were tipping on stage went pretty far back then.
