Comparing Sweden and Denmark, the recent numbers don't seem that different, and Sweden doesn't seem worse than others. That is backed up by the numbers reported here as well: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/. Looking over those numbers, I see many, many countries practicing lockdowns in far worse shape than Sweden.
If you look at the geography of the three countries, Denmark is by far the outlier. Absent the Kiel Canal, it is basically Germany with a far denser population than its northern neighbors. Both Norway and Sweden have vast areas with little population and share a common border. Yet Norway has 1/3 the infection rate of Sweden. Population density is the global equivalent of social distancing. If two very similar areas have such different infection rates, it is not difficult to determine why.

You are free to disagree. But thanks for the civil discourse.

Now, Sweden itself will be the first to admit it made mistakes in the way it handled the elderly in the early days of the Coronavirus. I think the whole world had a lot to learn about Coronavirus at that time, and no one got it 100% right, and sacrifices were made in one form or another causing loss of life, whether or not that is officially recognized in the stats or not. As your post said, "The Future" let's focus on that and not waste time looking back at past mistakes, except to learn from them. Looking at the more recent numbers, I don't see the basis for your case. And particularly not when you take into account the socioeconomic impacts that you don't care to address. Norway and Denmark happen to be very wealthy countries that can afford to lockdown, but that's not the case for most countries. And I won't get into the impact this has on the world supply chain and those 3rd world countries and lives lost there, which believe me, dwarf the COVID losses (now estimated at 1. 2 M vs the 9 M lives estimated by the WHO to be lost due to the economic impacts of the COVID shutdowns).

I also don't agree with your point about Sweden changing its stance. There's nothing in those links that indicates any drastic change in Sweden's original recommendations, only that they are perhaps tightening up on those recommendations and beginning to enforce those, instead of relying solely on voluntary compliance. So what if their PM got COVID and had to self-isolate? That's common sense. That has no bearing whatsoever on their approach to COVID- it's completely irrelevant and nothing but sensatiionalism, just as the rest of the content was sensationalized. I hardly see this in the light that you presented it- that their model has "crumbled" and they need to implement "stern" measures while they wait on a vaccine. Life is going on for the Swedes, they're not hiding in a cave waiting for a vaccine.

    Gladly.

When comparing countries, geography and thus climate, plus population dispersion, become important factors.

Sweden raised eyebrows around the world earlier this year when it decided to keep schools, gyms and restaurants open and not issue a national mask mandate, though in past weeks it issued new restrictions such as limiting the number of people who can sit together at a restaurant to eight.

The Nordic country has had 141,764 confirmed coronavirus cases in total, including 4,034 new cases reported Thursday. Just over 6,000 people have died. The tallies surpass those of its neighbouring countries, including Denmark, which has had 50,530 cases and 729 deaths, and Norway, which has counted 21,954 cases and only 282 deaths.

Do you mind sharing what you're basing that on? If you look at the current rates of France, Belgium, and some other European countries that practiced your stern measures, Sweden is not doing any worse (in fact, better in some cases). I have not seen a change in their policy towards Coronavirus. Do you know something the rest of us don't?

Now, if you take into consideration on top of that the socioeconomic impact of these "stern measures", not just on said country implementing them, but worldwide, you have to wonder who the enemy really is? No one knows how long a vaccine might take, or how effective that vaccine might be, or for how long it might be effective. I don't think the world can afford to go hide under a rock while we wait on a vaccine, and I don't believe that's the healthiest thing for the world, either. We can agree to disagree, but we can't agree that you're going to impose your "stern measures" on everyone else.

BTW, I think it's apparent that the rest of the world doesn't necessarily agree with these stern measures either, witnessed by the protests against lockdowns taking place in many European countries now.

    The future

Can we finally stop all the bullshit about how one party is going to decimate the other in this election. As I write this, we still don't know who the next President will be, and even after the counting has ended, challenges, recounts, and lawsuits will keep thing muddled for the foreseeable future. What we do know is that this country deeply and evenly divided and that if we cannot figure out a way to work together we are screwed. Somehow, somewhere, reason must prevail.

At least the end of the election will allow us to get serious about the Covid virus. Over 100,000 new cases yesterday shows that our current tactics have been unsuccessful. The vaunted Swedish model has crumbled and they have come to the realisation that ignoring the problem will not make it go away. Unfortunately stern measures are necessary on a temporary basis until a vaccine is developed and distributed.

In the words of Pogo, "We have met the enemy and he is us. ".

Bubba's tire shop? Shit, I did work at a tire shop when I was 16 for about 6 months; however, I have a very good white collar job that you could never hope to obtain. Enjoy your coloring books for Christmas, asswipe.

The J-1 program started by JFK was particularly targeted for this goal during the cold war. That program has devolved into a ticket to the USA. That said, kudos to you coming here legally, you literally won the lottery. Most of us have no issue with legal immigration. Wanting to correct that is not racists, that is fiscally responsible and fairness by providing for those for who it was intended.

I never met a liberal who is racist. That opinion is yours to own. I never met a liberal who could piss on a wall.

Every neo Nazi, KKK, all those white nationalists and about 40% of southern people belong to Republican party and have deep hatred towards colored people. Nice broad brush stroke. I have lived here most of my life and have never met a KKK member or proclaimed neo nazi or white nationalist,. I suspect you haven't either. A little self reflection and honesty is good for the soul.

How do I know? Because I have fucking white / olive skin and people like that fucker Nireluvr open up to me. How do you explain that that?

"people like night" not direct experience? Now who is the bigot? That would be you.

I have never seen this much hatred and anger in America ever since I have been here. It is sickening it is because of the bozo in the White House. Bozo? Not exactly, boorish, polarizing, and egotistical, yes, but he has done exactly what he set out to do and that is what is needed. When the extreme left presents a socialist agenda and has the likes of AOC and Pelosi as leaders. Damned right many of us have a problem with it.
The last paragraph in all of this is exactly right.
