I've had a similar experience. It takes a lot of work and patience but I've probably ended up hooking up with more girls for free than I did via paying and have also made some friends that I'm still in contact with today and have actually even dated a few girls from there. One in particular ended up being a total horror story but in general I've had more luck than I've had on Tinder / Bumble. If you are decent looking and have some game you will be surprised how many under 30's want to just give it away for free. On the flip side of that I've had several older (30 +) also just want to hook up or be taken out and then hook up simply because I'm new, in shape and more exciting than their husband / bf or ex.
