Anyone remember that fire at Rock-Za back in the mid-'90's? I always suspected it was some kind of scam to get the place remodeled. I remember they moved Rock-za temporarily to one of dive bars behind what was Aaxtion Video and The Wild Horse, next to Akasaka sushi.

Anyway, one more story: I used to work at a place in Kakaako back in the mid-'90's, where they enforced parking 24/7. Exotic Nights was right around the corner. One of the things that kept me from going to Exotics was just how bad parking was at night (and I'm not really into anything but white girls). I got to say, that parking lot afforded me the opportunity to finally check out the place, and holy shit was that place popping and nasty. Would have been heaven if I were into local Filipino chicks.
Well, when you said you remember seeing Dirty Dans when you were doing grade school field trips to Sand Island, I certainly didn't expect you to know About Club Mignon. LOL. Anyway Club Mignon was a great place in the early 80's. I remember one time actually spending 10 hours in that club! I had never done that in any strip club before or since! What happened was that I was driving home from school around 4 pm. I was attending UH Manoa and lived on the Windward side. Traffic was horrendous and I decided to stop in for happy hour and let traffic die down. It's not the first time I hit a strip club in the afternoon to avoid traffic but usually I would stop in for an hour or 2 max. Just happened this day they were having an anniversary celebration, so they had every single girl working. A team night shift girls, B team afternoon shift girls, and anything in between. Even at 4 in the afternoon, it was packed with talent. On top of that they had cheap beer, drink specials and all kinds of contests going on through the night. I stayed from 4 in the afternoon until closing at 2 am, had a blast, didn't spend much money (I was a broke college student anyway) and went home with some prizes from contests including several t-shirts and hats. I remember I still had a Club Mignon t-shirt that I wore in the early 2000's! Was funny running into an oldtimer in the street or in a store or something and having him point to my shirt and give a thumbs up, 20 years after the place closed. I still frequented the place when it became Club Rose.

I bet you didn't know that Rockza was originally opened as "Butterfly II". As I mentioned earlier, Yvonne's original club was Butterfly Lounge on Keeamoku, so when she opened her new place it was Butterfly II. That was around 1988. I don't recall when it became Rockza (maybe 1989 or 90). The Butterfly II name didn't last long.

I vaguely remember the fire at Rockza but I think it happened when I was living on the Big Island.

The busy club on Keeamoku you are thinking of was probably Butterfly Lounge. That was one of my faves in the mid 80's, along with Club Mignon, a few steps up the street. Butterfly was Yvonne's (Rockza) original club. It was where Stargazer was, (before Stargazer). Club Mignon became Club Rose and then 939.
Thanks much for the clarification, LD. Memories!!

BTW, speaking of Kilgo's, I used to go there a lot--a place where I could find things that nobody else had.

    Tag line

"100's of beautiful girls and 3 ugly ones" is actually a registered trademark of DejaVu Showgirls. (Registered back in 1991). However, I was incorrect in thinking DejaVu was another MJP club. DejaVu is owned by someone else who owned a nationwide chain of clubs. I know I remember seeing the sign in Waikiki, but I thought it went as far back as Pure Platinum. It may have only been there after that place changed to DejaVu. I also remember seeing it at clubs on the mainland, so I knew it was a chain thing not an individual club thing. Since the topic came up here, it brought back memories and I googled it. Interesting what you can find on google. LOL.

It later became Totally Titanium and then Deja Vu Showgirls before closing in mid 2000's. Other places may have used similar ad lines (and perhaps Classic Cat did) but I recall it from the MJP clubs (including the one in Hawaii), and I'm pretty sure it's trademarked.

About Dancers. Wasn't that the place that was on the right-hand side of Sand Island Access Road when going toward Sand Island--in the early 1990's? Never went there, but it does ring a bell. During that timeframe, my primary hangouts were Club Rose, Saigon Passion II and another very busy strip club also on Keeaumoku. That name of that place escapes me.

    Ah, the memories.
Dirty Dans was actually a pretty cool club.

It was still ok when it first changed to Dancers. In later years Dancers was definitely a dive, but in the early years Dirty Dan's was actually a pretty nice place. It was really big inside, and clean. The stage had a long runway attached. There were some hot girls dancing there. Because of the area, the clientele was mostly bikers, but of all the times I went there, I don't recall any crazy fights or anything. Good shows, friendly hot dancers, reasonably priced drinks.

I wonder if the ugly girls knew who they were, or if the owner just kind of shrugged his shoulders if a girl asked if they were one of the pretty ones or one of the ugly ones. (That would be a mindfuck.).

Oh boy old Dancers! I loved that place. It was on the left side of Sand Island Access Road when going toward Sand Island. The girls weren't the greatest but they were real friendly. If you know what I mean. HAHAHA!! I can't remember her name, but there was an older Asian lady that stripped there and I got a few lap dances with her that turned into her riding the pony.

I want to say it was on the left? But I'm not sure. I think there was a venue close to Dancers that Golden Voice used to rent as a venue for all-ages shows back in the day when GV had a presence here (I remember Bad Religion and NOFX would play at that venue.).

I was more of a Femme Nu, Rock-Za and Wild Horse (especially when they had a good feature) kinda guy myself. Also frequented Rose. Loved Club Rose. I think it was the most chill of any of the clubs. I can't remeber any girl there ever hustling a drink. If they wanted to talk to you, they just sat down and hung out.

Also knew a bouncer at Rose who I went to high school with. Funny thing is that after Rose closed for the night, the staff would hit Pure Platinum in Waikiki because it closed at 4. Pure Platinum was supposed to be only over-21 and the cover was steep because tourists. They'd just wave us in because it was all staff from another bar and they never checked their IDs and they assumed I was with them. It was great for an 18 year old.
Classic cat was where the Pussies purr. LOL. That was their ad slogan.

    Pleasantly Surprised at Rock-Za

As Dante Alighieri wrote: "IN the midway of this our mortal life, I found me in a gloomy wood, astray Gone from the path direct. ".

In this case, astray gone from the path direct led me to the neon sign of Rock-Za.

See, I was usually a Femme Nu guy. That had always been my go-to place. Dated a few girls who worked there. I had friends who worked there. Back when the place was pumping, I was a regular and everyone, from Yuni to the bartenders to the waiters, took care of me.

But to mix my metaphors and media, Don Draper would say nostalgia has a powerful pull. If anyone's been harping about and documenting the decline of the Nu, it was I. But I've been going back, hoping things would be different, but always walked away disappointed.

So, midway in this mortal life, I decided to change things up and go to Rock-Za. I'd been there a few times since I moved back a few years ago, and like Femme Nu, walked away feeling cold and unfulfilled.

I parked my car, having to valet it because the spacious parking the club used to have a short walk away was now just another building in the Kapiolani corridor. The first casualty of gentrification is, it seems, parking.

I went into the club, expecting to be let down. But hey, I was bored, I had reason to "celebrate" and I'd just gotten an invoice paid, so why not.

Paid my cover, rounded the corner and oh my god the place was actually busy.

Back in the '90's, I remember Rock-Za as having a regular rotation of three girls on the main stage and three or more on the rear stage during the week. But in the 2010's, I'd seen as few as one girl on the main stage and sometimes no girl on the rear stage. It was like I'd warped back to the '90's. There were three girls on the main stage and another three on the rear stage. They were all fairly hot — some smoking ones and some meh ones, but still, much better than the last time I'd been around.

There was a crowd too, and they were tipping. Tipping = happy strippers, and most of them were rubbing up against customers and not averse to getting felt up a little themselves. And was that girl jumping off the main stage and doing a quick lapdance?

A fake tittied dancer with big tits on the rear stage with a star around one of her areolas introduced herself as Naughty. Not her given name, I'd imagine. Said she was from DC, and those big ol' fake titties rubbed up against my cheek. Nice! Sat down in front of another girl. Said her name was something equally unbelievable as a given name (I don't really remember). Tall. Probably played a sport if she went to college. Small tits with eraser nips. Piercing on her taint.

Sat down in front of Michiko? Something Japanese. Don't know if the accent she had was for show, because she said she was from Seattle. Not really sure if she was Japanese either. Maybe Korean, maybe Filipino-something. You know how the lights are in these places. All I remember is that she was short, petite and had huge rack of big ol' fake titties and she had one of those pussies that just spread open on its own.

Also worth noting that these girls did not look like they were cycling in from Ballarina's (something I'd seen in the past). Looked like they were all Rock-Za house dancers.

So was it an anomaly? A hallucination created from the memories of better times? I guess I'll have to go again and see.

Found out later, some were 16,17. Moondance where Melody is now was one of the best known clubs. Opened at noon, lots of young hot girls with great action in private booths. Don't forget centerfolds. Lots of girls got their stay there, including Sway.
Lollipops was on the corner of Beachwalk and Kalakaua. When I first went, it was impressively large (for a strip club in Waikiki) but later they added a VIP area. There was a coffee shop right next door (Coco's maybe) where you could take the lady you managed the lady you managed to impress. There was a k-bar or 2 across Kalakaua (Mauka side) near a shooting range but I can't remember the names. I think it closed down late 80's or early 90's.
