You can turn off the notifications and use it to text and just periodically check it for responses, or turn the notifications on when you are not around the significant other. It's free and it will stop you from ever having this issue again. Hope it works out for you.

Here's another vote for using a text app. I use textnow, but there are others also. I don't get many opportunities to play around these days, so I take it a step further and delete the app when I'm not using it to prevent the SO from possibly spotting it on my phone and asking questions. Always has my call and text history when I redownload and login. Just make sure when setting it up the first time you pick a new number, don't let it use your own number.
