You can never be too careful.
I think a burner app can work. As long as you're texting with someone over 18, nothing explicit, there's not much they can do, especially if they just have the texts and you don't meet in person. Seems to me most (all) of the people they pop are in person as part of a sting / setup. Doubtful they'd venture to track down someone off a text message / the internet but I guess you never know.

Burner phone is a must. Apps can work but the still on your real phone. If it gets stolen lost toosed out window etc. Personally got burner phone 2nd indentity even a monger vehichle for that use only not tied to me.
