Not so great for the Customer

Not so great for hobbyist. It says in the article that the district attorney still intends on prosecuting patronizing prostitution. Which if any of you have been snagged before that's exactly the charge you receive.
The article talks about a "paradigm shift" in how they view it. Apparently that shift occurred here a long time ago. Prostitution is a B Misdemeanor, but Patronizing or Soliciting Prostitute is an A misdemeanor. That must be the women's' lib movement.

IslandGuy got this right. New York has adopted the "nordic model" . It's been law in Sweden, Denmark, etc for several years. Here's how it works. Johns get busted, working girls go free. There will still be busts and stings, but the girls will walk and you get to go to court. It's somewhat well intended but it can easily get sideways. Example, if you don't pay her what she thinks she deserves, she can call the cops and tell them you are soliciting. She smiles as you walk away in handcuffs, and welcomes her next client. It's the law in Canada now as well, and is making it's way into the US. If you want to see how legalized adult services are done successfully and safely for everyone, go to Germany or the Netherlands. The prices are low, the women are attractive and usually drug free, and they have free healthcare including scheduled VD checkups. I had a German sex worker say to me, "I have better healthcare than you do!" And she was likely right.

I hadn't planned any trips to NYC this year but might change that now! Been years since I played there, going to have to learn where to go all over again {sigh}.

It's a Woman's (providers) World.
To be clear, this is what's known as the "Nordic model" of handling prostitution. Here's how it works. It's no longer a crime to offer sex for money. However. It IS still a crime to SOLICIT prostitution (to pay for sex). So, when they raid the parlors or set up stings (and they will, for "human trafficking funding reasons) the girls go free with no arrests or records. And the "johns" go to jail. This has been the standard in Scandinavia for 20 years, and other "liberal" countries are adopting this format. Canada has the same laws; "girls go free, guys go to jail". In some countries the penalty for "solicitation" has been INCREASED substantially for the "johns". Significant jail time is mandatory in some some northern European countries for 2nd soliciting offenses. Thank GOD for Germany & the Netherlands, where the oldest profession is legal, safe, regulated, and fun. The Scary part: this gives the girls the power to call the cops, have you arrested & they go free, perhaps with a pat on the back and encouragement from law enforcement.

I totally agree. Terribly sad for theses ladies family and friends. It definitely opens a LARGE can of worms. Does his story of sexual addiction gain traction or does the whole Human Trafficking thing run wild. I suppose the squeaky wheel (media) will drive outcome.

RIP to those girls and their families that is horrific. Same old story, some men just don't see these types of girls as people. Really sad I hope it wasn't racially motivated too.

That may be the very attitude that causes you to be cautious and thus safe. We would probably all do well to follow your lead.
