You're right. The majority of human trafficking is slave labor on fishing boats and farms.

One could flip that around and ask why the state pays teachers so little.

If your little tax write-off is our most precious resource, then shouldn't the pay teachers get reflect that? Shouldn't they be paid as much as, say, petroleum engineers? (And let's face it, oil is, in fact, our most precious resource.).

But they won't because everyone gets fucked in Hawaii. No one gets paid what they're worth. I heard someone saying that people should accept getting paid less in Hawaii because "that's the price of paradise". That's condescending plantation thinking and complete bullshit.

In a few years, no one's going to be able to afford to live here because everything's going to be a tower with $15M condos no one lives in.

Hey, I used be on the board of a Union and members are charged by the amount of pay they have every month. So the more you make, the more Union dues you pay. $22 an hour for cleaning rooms is a good compensation not requiring technical upgrades or recertifications is a bargain. The Union may find itself on the losing end should the hotels decide to file for bankrupt and fire everyone, then change its name and hire the same ones, this time for less pay. Where can they find another job that pays over $20 in Hawaii?
