If your little tax write-off is our most precious resource, then shouldn't the pay teachers get reflect that? Shouldn't they be paid as much as, say, petroleum engineers? (And let's face it, oil is, in fact, our most precious resource.).

In a few years, no one's going to be able to afford to live here because everything's going to be a tower with $15M condos no one lives in.

If your not making $50 K with benefits here you will be priced out of Paradise in a few more years. There is no such thing as ONE JOB IS ENOUGH in Hawaii. Ask the people that have moved to the mainland for a better life. To live here comfortably and single would be $60 -70 K??

The powers that be have no interest in an educated population. They just need people who can work a service jobs. How much education does a bank teller need? Or some who works a hotel front desk? Or a retail clerk at Ala Moana? Not a lot, but to be fair, when they work part-time at all those jobs to make ends meet it's not like they have to worry about any where they went to college (but I'm sure they went to UH).

Hawaii's never had an economy that allowed people to be upwardly mobile. Not when the chiefs were in charge, not when the plantations owners were in charge and not now.

The oligarchy in Hawaii, and by that I don't mean the politicians (if anything, the politicians here are just well-paid enablers), have no vested interest in an educated population, or a population that is upwardly mobile and can easily start small businesses or work for themselves.

They want people that are locked in a plantation mentality. You're lucky to live in Hawaii and for this privilege, you'll be paid less. That's complete and utter bullshit. So shut up, shaka, be happy you live in Hawaii and don't ask for what you should be earning. That's why you have a brain drain. That's why your best and your brightest leave and never come back.

There are three factions that are against a lottery; LE community, churches and advocates for the poor and Vegas. All three have been against a lottery for the past 20 years. LE doesn't want it because of the bad elements it will attract. The churches and advocates say it will take away money from those who can least afford it. Vegas has lobbyists who don't want Hawaii to have a lottery because it may affect their bottom line. Many say the money raised won't stay here. Easy, do as other states have done. You must be a resident of that state to "buy" a ticket. In reality, small payouts on scratchers don't matter, so they don't care. However, the big $$$ that get claimed needs to have a resident put in the claim. Some say most of the money goes to admin costs. Not really. Take Texas for example, About 62% goes to winnings, 27% to education, 5% to retailer commissions and the rest to admin.

However, like the Con Am, our Leg needs to understand that monies from a lottery, like additional taxes, should supplement the budget, not supplant it. Wow, we have an additional $100 m for our schools! Good, now we can take that from the budget and give it to HART. No fucking way, should something like that happen.

So the judge has to decide what to do with this HPD Lt, but the question is whether or not he qualifies for full retirement benefits after committing the crime?

My guess is that he'll retain his pension, serve no jail time and pay 1/2 of the maximum penalty. This gives HPD and the whole law enforcement body another black eye! They seem to think they are above the law. Big egos hiding behind a badge.
