Both SCOTUS and CT Supreme Court have both ruled that an officer exercising ordinary caution while investigating a potential crime can ask an individual to identify themselves and that person is required to identify themselves. So other than "who are you?" you are not required to answer any further questions and the only things you should say are "am I being detained? May I leave now?

It depends on the facts. For example, I earlier stated an an example of walking outside of a hotel on private property as opposed to being in, or driving, a car. There is also the issue of probable cause vs probable suspicion. Unless the law was changed, Connecticut is not a "Stop and Identity" state. The actual statute would be interesting reading.

All great advice and a decent lawyer will win the case and you get no record. Unfortunately, what it doesn't prevent is the Cop from not being impressed with our great understanding of our rights and the law and simply charges us with solicitation and says tell your story to the judge. Which again, a lawyer will win. Of course, your name ends up in the newspaper under prostitution arrest. If you are single and don't have much family this may be no big deal but not a good option for a lot of guys. A few years back, I was questioned leaving the room area of a girl in a Bradley Airport motel. I very nicely told the officer I had given a girl a ride and that's it. He asked a few follow up questions and I just politely stuck to my story. He finally said, get the hell out of here and I did. I'm not saying this is the right approach for everyone but it was for me. Stay safe!

Yes, that was a good practical approach as the cop knew he had no case. It got you free sooner than my method. Being nice and respectful served you well in that instance. It's a judgement call.

If in that case, a cop with a confrontational attitude trying to "tag" someone, I would have not spoken to give reasons or explanations. It's extreme but if I get hauled in, I can afford to sit and wait it out. They've got nothing, they know it, and will use their bag of tricks to "coerce" statements to use against me. Cops are paid to arrest, prosecutors are paid to convict. Do not help them to harm you.

No cop has ever been talked out of arresting a suspect. Go beyond Sgt Shultz; know nothing, say nothing.

I'm a bit more radical and this may not work for all. If I'm walking on hotel (private) property, there is no reason for stopping and questioning anyone. I will stop but will not answer any questions. Having and presenting an ID begs other questions like why are you here, whether close or far from home. It takes practice to remain silent under pressure. Cops can lie verbally and when they write a police report. If you say nothing, your lawyer has a case for false arrest. The moment you talk, your words will be twisted. Guaranteed.

The biggest problem is people themselves. They knuckle under intense pressure, intimidation, lies and more while being detained or arrested. They can write all the bs in the world on a report but when your lawyer asks you, "what did you say to them?" If you did as this video instructed, you're home free as they stated.

I always carry ID though. Not my whole wallet, just my license, with a $20 wrapped around it. The $20 is for the same reason mentioned by others.

It's true in CT LE can't ask out of the blue, but there's any probable cause for LE to ask me, and if they're present, there probably is or they can easily make one up. The situation can be a lot worse if I can't identify myself. After ID'ing myself, if questions persist I'd ask for a lawyer. No ID? All they have to do is follow you out of the lot, possibly a different officer, and make up an infraction. If you're operating a motor vehicle, you ARE required to present a license, registration, and proof of insurance to the officer who stops you.

Hotels or motels won't have LE stopping you to ask questions out of the blue. Likewise, for any hotel security people. They have no probable cause to stop and grille you. Stay calm, keep walking, and answer no questions. Your presence violates no law and you are free to leave. Your reactions to them may give them probable cause if you freak out. They can lie; you can't.

I don't understand why some of you bring more than what is necessary to these meetings. With everyone, even ones I have seen multiple times and trust, my wallet, main cell and keys stay in my vehicle. FYI I have been ripped off a few times myself but didn't loose much.

I bring my burner phone (phone #'s are backed up), the amount of the donation plus $20 and covers. Why an extra $20? Maybe there are is an add-on I want to sample. Or if I get confronted by a pimp or BF "Give me all your money," then, "All I have is $20 it's yours. " I figure if I give them $20 then they are more likely to let me go without a confrontation. I also have a small knife which I would probably leave in the truck but I don't ever think about taking it off.

Here's a question for some of you: Should I be in a situation where I encounter LE how will not having I'd or keys affect me? At the very least they can't easily find my vehicle to impound it (I walked here).
