For me, I've found that as long as a hobby phone isn't a google voice / phone call app it won't matter, but providers do check the phone company you use sometimes. There are a few local FB groups but they are private groups. You have to be known and trusted for someone to invite you in. There are some jewels there and some not so good also.

I highly regret deleting my facebook I remember a group from about a year ago and whenever I'd come to town just one post and I was all set.
