Understand, I have never paid a deposit, but got close to it once about a year ago. There certainly are levels to this. It seems the higher you climb the ladder, the more "real" deposits occur. From their side, yes it cuts down on no shows. However, some will advertise a "tour" and seek the deposits to cover the overhead of the travel. If not enough, then tour gets cancelled, and I would assume deposits refunded.

IMO, majority of deposits on STG are likely scams. Depends on where you are shopping as to the potential validity.

So, as a rule I do not pay deposits, nor communicate with assistants. If I am trying to set an appointment with someone, kind of want to know that someone prior to committing, not a 3rd party thinking we would be compatible.
