My experience is that the bar girls will quote dollars. You can counter with a peso offer that, assuming you remember the exchange rate and aren't too drunk to do the math, will get you a better deal.

Don't have that much experience with street girls. The few I've done quoted dollars. Of course I'm an obvious gringo.

You don't need that much Spanish, particularly if you stick to the bigger bars. They all know "fucky / sucky. " If you want to get a little more adventurous you could memorize "comer su panocha?" (not sure if that's exactly correct, but, usually gets an enthusiastic smile. I would recommend at least getting a handle on the numbers. Up to 100 if you'll be dealing in dollars and up to 1000 if you'll be dealing in pesos.

Arriving in San Diego Saturday morning through the week for work and planning on hitting Tijuana (for my first time) either right away on Saturday and / or on Sunday. I'm limited in times, though, as I'll be taking the trolley from SD and I don't want to be stuck until 4:30 AM. . . Or do I? This thread has been a great resource. And I'll continue reading. I want to just experience as much as I can in that short period of time.

Bringing a few hundred dollars, US, does anyone have suggestions on what denominations or if / how I should separate it? Don't want it to look like I'm loaded with a wad of $5 bills, etc. I want to make sure I've got some negotiating power. I'm planning on bringing my passport (didn't have time to get a card. . . DAMN), cash, 1 credit card and my cell phone. (phone will be off. Just in case) Anything else I should have with me?

Also. Anyone experienced headed down across the SD border this weekend at all? The idea of a wingman doesn't sound terrible. Although I'm comfortable going alone. I'll certainly report back (maybe even while I'm on the trip and it's fresh in my mind!

Change your dollars in San Ysidro at the money exchange across from Jack in the Box for the best rate. Got 15.05 pesos per dollar today. Your money will go farther paying in pesos. If you use an Atm card at HSBC in Tijuana you get even more. Took out $500 in pesos today at HSBC and got 15.136 pesos per dollar and walked a half block to an exchange place and sold back pesos at 14.82 pesos per dollar. About $10. Or 2 percent profit in five minutes. I do this almost every day since I live in Rosarito.

It is probably best to avoid this weekend unless you have a Sentri card or unless you are prepared to wait hours in line. The US customs employees purposely slow down so that they can get more overtime.

I, personally, welcomed a wing man because in the few days before my first visit one of the members of our esteemed literary club was mugged and there was a random shooting. Having someone that knew the ropes was a fine security blanket.

I've always been mystified by this desire for a wingman. I always went solo. Could go and return when I wanted. Never felt a safety issue where a wingman would have made any difference.
