I've been to otay, ped west, and el chapel, 100 times on foot, and never noticed a 3rd line. Only one line for Sentri, and everyone else. Are you saying Americans can walk past everyone instead of standing in line?

I can't speak for Otay. But both PedWest and El Chaparal no longer have a third line. Or at least not regularly. In the past, they have had a Ready lane. So Americans with a Ready document would enter that middle lane and greatly reduce the wait. Now, it is very rare that they open a Ready lane. I've not seen it in many months.

I believe it is because all passports at this point are Ready documents. But that's just a guess.

Thanks to everybody here who helped me with logistics and advice. Just so helpful! Anyway, I made my maiden run to TJ today.

I was later getting away from San Diego than I planned, probably close to 9:30 this morning. Since I was a little unsure about how to get to the parking lot by Jack in the Crack, I parked at the regular border lot by the outlets for the $18 about 10:00 and I was on my way. I had absolutely zero trouble. The longest stop was to fill out the FMM and it looks like they marked that it is valid for 7 days. Plenty of time for me since I am visiting. Since I did not know exactly where the HK shuttle was, I took a taxi. When I asked if it was $5, the driver said $6. I wasn't going to quibble over a dollar or two, and I was on my way.

When I arrived, the first thing I did, was buy a VIP card. Thanks for that advice. Then I walked outside to book a room at Cascadas. This got a little interesting. Checkin is at 3:00, but checkout is at 1:00, and that two hours fell right into my window. Anyway, I went ahead with the room and they charged me $48 - not exactly sure how they got that amount. I dropped my jacket and a couple small items in my room and headed inside.

Again based on advise, I picked out one mesero right away and tipped him $5 to take care of me for the day. That kept all the others from coming up to me all the time. If they tried, he chased them away. Several girls came by and said hi, but I just wanted to enjoy the view for an hour or so. Let me say something. The girls actually look much better than the photos on the website and that really surprised me.

And why buy the VIP? The $50 for the card is much more than the $12 that it saved you. Are you planning on more trips in the next three months?

I did need a place to leave my jacket and a couple small items, but I did not stay overnight. I also heard about the dreaded knock on the door and did not want that hassle. With your passport or passport card (only need one, not both) you will stand in the US Citizen line. It is the middle line and may be an hour long or much less. When you walk up to the building, often the lines are well outside. There are usually (maybe always) agents outside who will guide you, if you need guidance. Once you get up to the agent at the end of the line you may be asked if you are bringing anything back or have anything to declare. They don't usually have a sense of humor so, "Gee, officer, I hope not," or something else pithy won't get a smile. They will then wave you through. If you do have a bag you will most likely have to have it x-rayed on the way in to Mexico. I can't remember if they do that on the way out (I never have a bag).

I will say that the agents for Mexico do get it, they know why we are there. When I have been asked what I am going to TJ for I usually am honest, "I am going to Hong Kong Gentlemen's Club and getting laid. " That always get a laugh.
