    Lock 'n Load

What has this world come to?? I was watching cable news the other day and saw two guys who were being interviewed about a new product that is now on the market: BULLET PROOF SCHOOL BACKPACKS.

Yep, that's right. You can now buy bullet proof backpacks for your kids to use. They only cost $175 and the bullet proof material, which weighs only 20 oz., is sewn onto the back of the pack and will stop a 9 mm round.

If that wasn't alarming enough, I read that many of the kids at Virginia Tech, where 32 students were gunned down 4 months ago, want to be able to carry firearms on campus. They don't feel confident that the school's administration is capable in protecting them and they want to be able to defend themselves.

Of course, kids will never be permitted to carry weapons on campus but it's indicative of today's violent society in which we live.

    Frederick Sports Expo

Don't forget, the Frederick Sports Expo at the Frederick Fairgrounds is this weekend. Cost is $7, unless you have a discount coupon. Free parking.

I just got back from the Expo and was a little disappointed. I was hoping to see more hunting exhibitors, concession stands, and guides hawking their wares. They usually have 4 buildings crammed full, but only 3 this year and there was room for other booths. Guess the competition is catching up with them.

When I was there this morning, they had a big crowd watching the dog competition. One building was devoted to showing the winning heads in the Maryland 2006 Trophy Deer Contest. This was particularly exciting to me since one of my buddies placed first in one category and honorable mention in a second.

They also featured a car, truck and bike show, gun and knife show, a catfish pond for youngsters, chainsaw carvers, gun raffles, and hunting and fishing outfitters.

    You don't???

I lived in Dundalk for 12 years. I don't know how I survived but I loved the people there. A retired PhD lived in the neighborhood and grew up in rural PA. but had never met people like this in his life. He loved it as well. He helped me keep my sanity (what little I have of course!)

True. That, and they didn't have a primer gray '74 Camaro with a Holley 800 CFM driven by a welder named Butchie during the renaissance. hon.

You want something to do in the Crownsville area this weekend: On Veterans Hwy. near Generals Hwy. Are the White Gables and Hill Motels. Both get their share of SW's walking nearby and at the local bars like Gina's Cantina.

    Maryland Renaissance Festival

Here's a fun activity if you are looking for something to do on weekends. The Renaissance Festival opens up on August 25 and ends on October 21, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m., rain or shine.

The activities include jousting, theater, music, arts and crafts, glass blowing, skill games for the kids, jugglers, and a whole bunch of other continuous events to keep you entertained. They sell a variety of food and drink too.

You will see a bunch of people including adults dressed in period costumes along with the staff. The Queen and her Court will be wandering through the grounds and will be available for pictures.

The Festival is located in Crownsville, MD., in a large permanent medieval village they built. It's really cool. They have this event every year. You can save a few dollars on the admission price if you have either a CVS or Giant card.

    Able2

If I could put in my 2 cents:

Go with the methadone. It is much more effective with someone who has never tried replacement therapy than suboxone (buprenorphine). There is about 40 years worth of data to back up the effectiveness of methadone, while the current version of suboxone (with naloxone added as an opiate antagonist to prevent abuse of the drug) dates only back 5 years since it's introduction into the field of opiate agonist replacement therapy.

Many of the girls out on the streets are using very large quantities of heroin, and some use oxycontin or delodid as well. suboxone is not made for the high dose opiate addict. Methadone, is itself the simplest (chemically) of all opiates. It acts on the opioid receptors in the brain to quell the cravings, and block the effects of other opiates.

I have shelled out $2,200 since February on a program, and I'm starting to see the positive results. A word of advice: Don't let her bs you into believing that it takes many months before they stop getting high. It takes about 21 days on methadone to reach about 80 mg per day. That's the point she should try to go without drugs for a while to see how she's doing with that particular dose. From there, she'll have to request increases until she gets to a dosing level that matches her particular level of addiction. They can't use benzoes, like diazepam, while on a methadone program. They can cause acute respiratory depression (think Anna Nicole Smith's son). Unfortunately, some dealers are cutting their drugs with benzoes now, and this shows up in their urine. Another good reason to get her off the drugs asap.

There is a limited number of doctors who can prescribe suboxone, and those doctors are severely limited in the number of patients they can prescribe suboxone to. Doctors aren't exactly beating down the doors of the federal government to become certified to prescribe it either. Doctors don't like working in fields that have a high rate of failure, such as addiction management. Baltimore City has resorted to paying doctors to take the buprenorphine course and become certified.

    Big Rack Attack!

I was driving over to the Stony Creek Gun Club in Pasadena, MD. to qualify for Maryland deer hunts, when I got a sudden BIG RACK ATTACK! No, I am not talking about girls with BIG BOOBS, but MONSTER BUCKS). lol Deer season is not too far away so it's time to start thinking about hunting.

On the way back from qualifying, I stopped at the Bass Pro Shops in Arundel Mills Mall to find out that it's their FALL HUNTING CLASSIC. The Classic ends tomorrow. This is a big deal for Bass Pro Shops and those customers who are looking to book waterfowl and deer hunts, buy a tree stand, duck/goose calls, shotgun, bow, hunting clothing, or an assortment of other related equipment.

In addition to their sales, they also have several reps and celebrities from the hunting industry to help advise you on your purchases, guest speakers (e.g., Bob Foulkrod, Sean Mann), and concession booths to sign up for various memberships.

While I didn't buy a thing since I have everything you could possibly buy, it was fun nevertheless to listen to the pros talk about their hunts, see guys buying shopping cart loads of supplies and the like. They also have a BBQ concession stand to buy food and drinks.

For those who don't know, Bass Pro Shops is a candy store for hunters, fisherman, campers and the outdoorsmen. If they make it, Bass Pro Shops probably carries it.

It's a nice way to spend a few hours.
