Posts: 1045STD's are on the rise
This article appeared in the USA Today newspaper today:
Chlamydia cases reported in the USA have topped a million for the first time, with the highest rates among adolescent girls, federal officials reported Tuesday.
The growing prevalence of chlamydia, which can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility, is mirrored by slight increases in the prevalence of gonorrhea and syphilis after years of declines.
In its latest update on sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) other than AIDS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about 19 million new infections occur each year, about half of them in young people aged 15 to 24. Medical care for these patients costs nearly $15 billion in the USA last year alone, the report says.
Last year, doctors reported 1,030,911 cases of chlamydia, an increase of nearly 55,000 cases in 2005. Yet, although chlamydia is the most commonly reported infectious disease in the USA, with 348 reported cases for every 100,000 people, the evidence suggests that the true tally is closer to 2.8 million new cases each year, the government reports.
"We have reason to believe that chlamydia is dramatically underreported," says John Douglas, director of STD prevention at the CDC in Atlanta.
Gonorrhea is also on the rise, an increase due partly to growing resistance to antibiotics, the report says. The number of reported cases reached 358,366 cases last year. Cases began to climb in 2005, after a 74% drop between 1975 and 1997 and several years in which reported cases remained stable. Last year, the rate of new cases reached 121 for every 100,000 people, an increase of nearly 6% over 2005.
Syphilis is also on the rise, after an elimination campaign begun in 1999 foundered. Although the number of cases is small, with just 9,756 last year, the rate of new cases has increased by nearly 14%, from 2.9 to 3.3 cases per 100,000.
Evidence that STDs are again on the rise worries infectious disease experts who say efforts to fight them have been curtailed somewhat by the growing pressure to respond to a range of public health problems, from AIDS to emerging infectious diseases to foodborne epidemics.
"The gap between what we were previously able to do and what we need to do is growing larger," Douglas says. The diminishing number of people with health insurance makes matters worse, he says. "If you don't have insurance, you're unlikely to get care," he says, adding that untreated STD patients are more likely to infect others.
The government tracks chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhea to examine overall trends. Some widespread infections, among them those by the viruses that cause genital warts and genital herpes, aren't reported at all.

The Silverado Gun Show at the Frederick Fairgrounds is today and tomorrow. Cost: $7.
They have 3 buildings crammed with tables selling guns, knives, military surplus, cleaning gear, ammo, books, etc. I did not see any great deals on guns, but you could get good prices on Federal 9 mm ($9/50 round box), .38 caliber ($10/box), and .357/.45 caliber ($12.50/box) ammo. They were also selling new magazines for your model 911 .45 ACP for $5.50.
I ended up buying another book, SHOOTER, by Jack Coughlin and Casey Kuhlman, both USMC snipers. It sold for $24.95 and I bought it new for $8.
The organizers of the event should consider leasing out that 4th building and have our SW's set up their booths. Now that would be a one-stop-shop and a big money-maker! lol

Posts: 1318Abuse, yeah maybe?? They are viewed more sympathethically. Not the real issue, dual diagnosis is, with the city and state not willing to deal with it because of the cost.

This article appeared today in the Baltimore Sun newspaper. Politicians are going to try another approach to lessen the AIDS epidemic and prostitution in Baltimore. Those white vans you will soon see on the various loops may not be LE, but Health Department staff trying to reach out to SW's, the "core transmitters" of AIDS.
Here's the article:
Baltimore ranks second - behind Miami - on a list of U.S. cities where AIDS cases are spreading fastest. One cause is the large number of women who live on the margins and trade sex for money and drugs. Their harrowing and compelling stories, as detailed this week by The Sun's Jonathan Bor and Kim Hairston, highlight a shadowy world where many urban ills collide.
What's needed is a comprehensive effort, by public officials and private groups, to secure resources and provide services to these women whose private acts of survival have major public health consequences.
The AIDS epidemic here is intertwined with addiction to crack cocaine and other substances, making women who trade sex for drugs "core transmitters," according to experts. Many of these women were victims of sexual abuse as children, and many have turned to drugs as a form of self-medication to deal with their pain and shame.
They often lack an education, a job, a steady income or a home, and they become trapped by their habit into prostitution. Some women can be helped through the criminal justice system. A prostitute might get initial treatment or care for HIV while in jail. And the nonprofit group You Are Never Alone has organized support groups at the Women's Detention Center for a decade, offering women the opportunity to refocus their lives. A proposed prostitution court that would divert women into counseling and treatment also would have a positive impact.
But for hundreds of these women, sex trading goes on in the darker, hidden corners of the drug culture, and they remain unknown to the courts and others who might help. They must be found, and public officials are belatedly making a push to do so.
In January, Baltimore's Health Department will begin a $70,000 one-year pilot program, sending a van out twice a week to the areas where these women often ply their trade. Staffers will offer clean needles and HIV testing as well as counseling and referrals to medical and housing services. That's a good starting point. But it will take even more public and private efforts - and a focused commitment - to provide greater outreach and to ensure that the women's most acute needs, including housing, drug treatment and health care, are available once they decide to accept a helping hand.
As the progress of AIDS shows, leaving these women in the shadows endangers not only them but also an increasing number of city residents.

BSR's condition reported as basically unstable, which is normal for him. He is recovering from the shock of the poorest play I have seen this year from the Ravens, and very animated by the spanking of yet another undesirable member of USG.

P.S. At least my boys know when to stop running up the score!
P.S.S. We need to get together on Dec 3rd. I'll be cheering for the Ravens like I was a blockette.

I was going back and looking at some ones posts to see if this poster has a history of trying to stir things up. Anyway I noticed the view counter and the numbers seemed quit high to me. So I went back and checked the views on my posts and the numbers 72, 414, 565, 433 and 672, 563 kept repeating as the number of views. Check your posts and you will probably see the same thing. Anyone have any idea what is going on with this?
