I use a similar setup for my cannon. Unfortunately, I often pickup a color tint from the background. I'd love to be able to use continuous lighting with umbrellas.

Most of my locations are cramp, and cluddered, shooting angles are few. Even the motel rooms are small and confining. For that reason and more, setting up umbrellas is out of the question.

Do you use fill or offset lighting or do you rely totally on a single flash and bounced lighting to soften you subjects.

Always good to hear from you CJ. Like you, I am frequently forced to shoot the ladies in cheap hourly notels. These settings are less than ideal. As far as lighting goes, I use a combination of what you describe. I always have on of my SB700 flash units attached directly to the camera and usually pointing to the ceiling. I occasionally have a sto-fen diffuser attached pointing at a 45 degree angle. I prefer the Sto-fen to the Nikkor diffuser provided with the flash unit. If space provides, I like to have a second SB700 off camera as fill in flash. That unit is also pointed at the ceiling for bounce flash. That's why I avoid hourly notels with mirrors on the ceiling! I don't worry much about picking up a color tint because I shoot in RAW format. I can correct any color disbalance later. The photo below of Sissy was taken with a single SB700 with the sto-fen diffuser attached. Since she was sitting in a chair, I didn't think I needed a second SB700 as fill in flash.
