OK, so decided to take the plunge and get off grid with a pre-paid cell. I have to tell you that the choices out there are amazing. But searching around the web, I found a site where the author has a side-by-side comparison chart. No one cell phone is best for everyone so look at the chart and see what makes sense for you. I selected the Net10 cell phone because it was GSM, has no activation fee, no monthly fee, works on AT&T or T-Mobile networks, has 5-cent texting and appears to have one of the lowest per minute costs (10-cents per minute) of any of the providers. The only draw back is that the lower denomination minutes: 200 minutes expire in 30-days. I figured $20 was a minimum monthly hobby “tax” that I was willing to pay.
