Nobody should know better than us that you don't get anything for free in this world. You pay for everything somehow. In the "free VPN" case you're paying with your data.

I'd recommend you pay for your VPN. Most reputable services come out to less than $10/ month on a semi-annual or annual subscription.

Depends on who you wish to not be tracked by. Paying for a VPN leaves a trail, that leads back to you. I think that is akin to using your CC to pay for access to PACER and then having the Feds show up at your door because your were accessing hobby related cases. Have seen enough around to suspect that LE can sit on the exit node of a VPN and correlate that to your entry activity. Seen it done.

BUT I believe there is one VPN that is free and safe to use, I. E. No tracking or surveillance.

Been using PureVPN for 5 years now, works great, lots of options and countries, excellent add-ons to browsers, phone app, I can surf, stream sports, download. And price is right.

I'm not high tech guy, but did some online research, including looking at reviews / ratings on CNET. I chose ExpressVPN. Price was decent, speed decent, they seem to protect your data and privacy, and I like the kill switch feature, if the VPN isn't working, it cuts all traffic, so your ISP isn't exposed.

And if anyone else in your household questions why you've configured a VPN on your devices, cite the general eavesdropping and hacking dangers on the Internet and offer to configure the VPN on her device (s) as well. Many plans will include protection on several devices as part of the base price.

" Maybe I'm not getting this, but isn't the reason many apps are "free" is that they lay 'awake' in the background and record your location, surfing, etc. ? If so, doesn't that kind of monitoring run counter to the reasons for using a VPN?

Many VPNs work with mobile devices. If you search the Google Play store for VPN you should get a good assortment of VPNs.

Your timing is excellent. Just yesterday I figured out that by using TOR over the ProtonVPN I have been able to access STG once again. Mostly.

From time to time I will get their caution sign screen, but if I wait three seconds and hit F5 the site will usually reload.

Also, from time to time I do have to ask for a new TOR identity. But for the most part that has worked.

As with everything else in this hobby, YMMV.

As I played with Hola, I discovered that most of the IP address checker websites gave an address other than my real one but there was one that kept showing my REAL IP. I guess that means Hola isn't secure enough for me so I'll try TOR.

I've been looking for an answer to this for weeks. I would never visit hobby sites without a VPN but STG wouldn't connect to anything from the multiple I tried (TunnelBear, NordVPN, ProtonVPN, etc.). I finally found one that shows me as in Great Britain on Whatsmyip.com but STG will connect to. It's a free Chrome add-in called Hola available in the chrome store as a free extension. Enjoy!
