You can look up an IP address but the question is what someone will see. When you visit the IP Lookup page and paste an address into the empty box, here's what you'll find out:

The first time you see the IP detailsespecially your city, ZIP code and the area code of where you liveit can be a bit a surprising. The IP details aren't always close. They can be hundreds of miles off, and if the person is using a VPN and a different IP address, the information can be highly inaccurate.

But it's important to see what you don't get in the IP details, and never will. You don't see any real information about the person who is using that assigned IP address, including a street name and address. You will get the name of the Internet Service Provider that serves the domain name.

Correct. So in a nutshell, a service provider has absolutely zero way to obtain your IP address and probably wouldn't be able to do much with it even if they did. The police would have to convince the text app provider to give it to them by persuasion or via the legal process with a warrant and then find out if the ISP has a record of you owning that IP address. Beyond that, as we've seen in the old DMCA cases, US courts have ruled that an IP address does not equal a person and the police need to go further to prove that it's really specifically you and not someone else in the same location or using the same device. That can be trickier but is quite possible, if they can prove that the activity follows you around they can make quite a compelling case that it is indeed your traffic. That's a crap ton of work to go through just to get a John and it's pretty unlikely a department would waste those kinds of resources and hope they didn't miss anything when they can just run a quick sting.

Text apps are fine, your only real potential exposure is to law enforcement unless you're stupid enough to use your real name in a directory.. The text apps can track your IP address and possibly location so using them on public WiFi is probably best practice, but a normal person can't track down your home / cellular IP history.

Based on Google Image search you will not find that girl behind the door when you arrive. The ad wording is so overt that it is unlikely that this is a legit ad IMHO.

Well, I feel like an idiot. I googled all, but one photo. After googling the last image, it came from a cam site.

And didn't see the way the ad is worded til I checked again. Oh well.
