COLUMBUS, Ohio. Dozens of people were arrested after the first part of a three-day law enforcement blitz targeting areas known for drugs, drunken-driving and other criminal activity in Franklin County, sheriff's officials said Saturday.

Sheriff Zach Scott said sheriff's deputies and Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers arrested 43 impaired drivers, made 81 felony arrests, recovered two stolen vehicles and seized three illegal weapons since "Operation Shield" began on Thursday morning. 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported.

With the help of drug-sniffing dogs, authorities also seized 307 grams of marijuana, four grams of cocaine. 14 grams of crack cocaine. 4 grams of heroin. 140 pills and bath salts.

Operation Shield is a joint effort between the Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol, with support from SWAT, USA Marshal's office, Franklin County Prosecutor, the Franklin County Clerk of Courts Office and the Franklin County Engineer's Office.

Scott said an increased problem with heroin and drug trafficking, as well as an increase in drunken-driving arrests, led to the massive operation.
