IMHO, henrico is good area. East part could be little shady, still better than Chamberlain or Bells Rd, west henrico is great. In Midlothian you will find good hotels and bad motels, it just depends which part.

Can a RVA local let me know where are some of the spot we should avoid for the hobby?

That is, don't appear nervous or timid, know where you are going. Have an appointment at 4? Be there at 3. Scope out the area, have a plan for different situations.
