Is it just me or do some of the 939 waitresses look better than their dancers? We had a petite Filipino-looking girl with blue hair who was perky and actually provided good service. I think her name was Ashley but no luck in convincing her to be a dancer.

In my experience over the last 30 years, it seems like the waitress position is a introduction to working in a strip club and in many instances leads to dancing, or at least trying it. It would be my suggestion to continue going to see her and when she does start dancing, you will have a nice time with someone you already have a relationship with. If not, you will still get good service and have a nice time with a cute waitress. Sounds like a win-win. I know I will continue to apply this approach.

Hey, so I was at Femme Nu a few nights ago and bumped into a totally new girl. It was her second night, and she's totally new to the scene. Her name's Britney — blonde surfer / skater chick from SoCal and Portland. Blonde, the way I like them, and she's got a pretty good body. (She's about five or six days into the job now.).

She's shy, but like I said, she's new. She doesn't play, but if you want to see a stripper while she's still into her job and not jaded, check her out.

Haven't been here in ages, so popped in the other day. Lots of girls there early, but nothing really caught my eye besides a local Filipino spinner chic who was sitting with a guy buying her drinks the whole time I was there. Didn't catch her name, but will seek her out the next time I stop by.

Yeah, those Russian girls at Femme Nu are pretty notorious for pulling that shit (asking for money upfront). They're gorgeous, but you know when they're shouting at each other in Russian, they're probably going on about the sucker that just laid out $20 in advance for them to dance.

You know what's funny? The way the girls just use their phones on stage, sprawled out on their stomach, sitting on the stage or stretching on the poles, the funny thing is that it's the same way girls used to smoke on stage. If you went back in time 20 years, those girls would be doing the same things, just with a cigarette in their hands, not a smartphone.

Funny thing is that I would argue the girls were a lot more social when they smoked than they are now with their phones.

I'm assuming this is limited to Femme Nu and 939; there's literally no space to do this at RZ. I haven't been to SPIII or any of the other, smaller places recently to notice of this was an issue.

I remember a 10 year ago the girls would work for there money. Now they pay more attention to there cell phone until the guy pay first then they would preform. I use to know a dancer name sway she could shake her booty and could sit with you with out keep asking for drinks last time I saw her was femme nu about three years ago. Wonder what she is doing now.

I haven't hit a strip club in the afternoon since the late '90's, so I'm not sure. To be fair, I don't see why they wouldn't (still) open leave their doors open as long as their liquor licenses allow.

That being said, I've seen the doors of 939 closed way before 2 am on some weeknights. I've been to Femme Nu, counted more wait and bar staff in the place than paying customers.

There was some girl who was advertising on BP about six months ago and she had some photos on her at Femme Nu. I was curious, as I'd never seen her, so I went to see her. She said Yuni kept her on the day shift, so I guess there is still a day shift. And to be fair, I could see why Yuni would want to keep this girl working days. This girl was huge. I mean, I know the girls working at Femme Nu are nothing like the ones that used to work there in the '90's, but this girl was big. (No, I didn't hit it. Made up a reason why I had to leave.).

Here's the thing to remember: back in the day (in my case, that was the mid- to late-'90's), even the daywalkers were good-looking. But that was because the girls who worked the night shift, the shifts that made crazy money, were stunning. Hell, even the girls that worked during the day did ok. It was a totally different world.

If I remember right, Femme Nu opened at 2. Hell, the Wild Horse (now Jazz Minds) might have opened earlier, because I could swear there was a feature showtime at 11 am on Fridays for the porn stars. Club Rose (now 939, but the place looks nothing like Rose) and Rock-Za opened at 4. And the girls were all, at the very least, good-looking. (I frequented Femme Nu, Rock Za, Club Rose and the Wild Horse back then. Not sure about the other clubs, but the other members are more than welcome to chime in.).

It was also a different vibe. The girls were a lot more chill. I know I keep on saying that, but I don't remember the girls hustling me in Femme Nu for drinks. I'm guessing it was because their garters were always choked with bills and the bar was always busy as hell. If a girl liked you, or hell, if she was bored, she'd just talk. Light up a cigarette, yes on stage, lay there and talk. This was even more so during the day. I used to work at a cigar shop around the corner from Femme Nu, so I'd know a lot of the girls because they'd buy cigarettes (at least, the ones that didn't smoke Marlboros because the 7-11 was always cheaper for Marlboros). I'd show up at the club when I finished up at the shop, they'd smoke, I'd smoke a cigar and we'd just talk. Or I'd just sprawl out on a corner, blow smoke rings and chill out. Sometimes a girl I knew would plop down next to me and just hang. It was nice.

There is nothing like sitting your ass down while the sun is still up, hanging out in a strip club, smoking a Cuban (back when Cubans were actually worth the price) then walking back out into the sun and being blinded by it because you just spent the afternoon tipping or bullshitting with your favorite bunch of dancers. The funny thing about going into Femme Nu back then is that during the day, they were heavy on the UV lighting so you'd see every speck of dust if you wore a black shirt, and once your eye acclimated, everything was bathed in this weird purplish-blue color. Then you head to Akasaka because you're hungry and one of the girls join you because she's hungry too. I know there's guys here who talk about daymongering, but $200 back then could get though two in the afternoon to the early evening at the club if you didn't go crazy (not counting the sushi).

I'm not going to say I lived through the golden age of strip clubs. I think the guys who are older than me who remember Stoplite have that honor. But I do think I saw the strip clubs peak, hit their high mark, then recede. Like Tony Soprano said: "It's good to be in something from the ground floor. I came too late for that and I know. But lately, I'm getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over. "

Is what you old timers discussing below still even possible today? I was under the impression that a place like 939 isn't even open till like 7:00 pm. Also, Femme Nu looked empty when I passed by the other day on Kona St side on the way to Ala Moana so I just assumed they were closed.

What happened was that I was driving home from school around 4 pm. I was attending UH Manoa and lived on the Windward side. Traffic was horrendous and I decided to stop in for happy hour and let traffic die down.

Funny. I used had a similar commuter situation when I went to UH. I'd hang out at Femme Nu. I had an English lit lecturer that kept on mysteriously not showing up to teach his class. It got so bad, we were wondering if the clas was going to be cancelled and we'd all get an A (it was one of those college rumors people swore was true). I'm at Femme Nu one afternoon and there he was. Saw him a few times there, always with the same girl. So that explained that.

I remember I still had a Club Mignon t-shirt that I wore in the early 2000's! Was funny running into an oldtimer in the street or in a store or something and having him point to my shirt and give a thumbs up, 20 years after the place closed. I still frequented the place when it became Club Rose.

I remember those Femme Nu shirts used to be everywhere, the ones that ripped off Patrick Nagel (take a look at the cover art for Duran Duran's Rio album cover and you'll see what I mean). It occurred to me to buy one a few years ago for shits and giggles, and the bartender (a friend of a friend) laughed and said they'd sold the last one a long time ago.

I bet you didn't know that Rockza was originally opened as "Butterfly II". As I mentioned earlier, Yvonne's original club was Butterfly Lounge on Keeamoku, so when she opened her new place it was Butterfly II. That was around 1988. I don't recall when it became Rockza (maybe 1989 or 90). The Butterfly II name didn't last long.

Interesting. You know how there's that walking tour of what was Chinatown's red light district? I have a feeling that one day I'll be this old man giving walking tours of Kapiolani Blvd's strip clubs, after everything in that corridor's become multimillion dollar condos nobody lives in.

Yuni went from Mignon to a Femme Nu, and Yvonne went from Butterfly Lounge to Butterfly II / Rockza. They have both been running strip clubs for well over 30 years.

Well, when you said you remember seeing Dirty Dans when you were doing grade school field trips to Sand Island, I certainly didn't expect you to know About Club Mignon. LOL. Anyway Club Mignon was a great place in the early 80's. I remember one time actually spending 10 hours in that club! I had never done that in any strip club before or since! What happened was that I was driving home from school around 4 pm. I was attending UH Manoa and lived on the Windward side. Even at 4 in the afternoon, it was packed with talent. On top of that they had cheap beer, drink specials and all kinds of contests going on through the night. I stayed from 4 in the afternoon until closing at 2 am, had a blast, didn't spend much money (I was a broke college student anyway) and went home with some prizes from contests including several t-shirts and hats. I remember I still had a Club Mignon t-shirt that I wore in the early 2000's! Huh. I didn't know there was a club at the location 939 is at before it was Rose. That's definitely before my time.

Anyone remember that fire at Rock-Za back in the mid-'90's? I always suspected it was some kind of scam to get the place remodeled. I remember they moved Rock-za temporarily to one of dive bars behind what was Aaxtion Video and The Wild Horse, next to Akasaka sushi.

Anyway, one more story: I used to work at a place in Kakaako back in the mid-'90's, where they enforced parking 24/7. Exotic Nights was right around the corner. One of the things that kept me from going to Exotics was just how bad parking was at night (and I'm not really into anything but white girls). I got to say, that parking lot afforded me the opportunity to finally check out the place, and holy shit was that place popping and nasty. Would have been heaven if I were into local Filipino chicks.

Whatever happened to all those pinays? Easy play there.
