This might seem like alot of extra work, but here's one thought. Take the SO for a cheap overseas trip. A weekend cruise to mexico wasn't that much $ from what I recall. Or fly up to Vancouver for whatever reason. It'll give you a reason for a passport and those are good for 10 years.

I've seen people go with their I'd and birth certificate, I suppose you just need to prove you're a US citizen, obviously a passport cuts all the haggle.
