Mabel Harretos: A kind, merciful soul

Mabel Harretos touched many lives during the 60 years she ran her tavern in Indiana Harbor, and had a front-row seat for the Calumet Region's passing parade.

The daughter of Greek immigrants opened Pete and Mabel's on Michigan Avenue with her husband in 1946 to a neighborhood flush with the reality that East Chicago industry had just won the war in Europe.

She and Pete picked themselves up after a 1974 fire destroyed their building, and relocated the bar and grill to new space at Euclid and Broadway, where Mabel lived until her death June 2 at the age of 88.

Mabel's Cyclops hamburgers -- seasoned half-pound behemoths handmade years before big sandwiches became popular -- fed many a steelworker from the union hall across the street, and were featured in region dining guides through the 1960s and 1970s.

Pete was the ambassador, rubbing elbows with sportsmen and politicians until his death in 1991, while Mabel kept a savvy eye on the balance sheet -- amassing comfortable savings even as prosperity fled the harbor with the waning of Big Steel.

Her threat to withdraw her accounts from Michigan Avenue's last bank kept the office open for an extra year in 1996.

But mostly, Mabel will be remembered for her mercy, as noted by the Rev. Constantine Aliferakis at her funeral a week ago.

Little League or Pop Warner clubs in the harbor area benefited from the support of Pete and Mabel's, and as hard times descended on the neighborhood, Mabel was always good for a meal or loan to those in need.

Charity begins at home, and her sons, Deno, Harry and Mickey, were the joys of her life, along with her 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

"You're all right, the world's all wrong," she would say with a smile to customers dwelling perhaps too deeply on their circumstances.

"Just remember, tomorrow's another day."

Stopped in P & M's Saturday afternoon. Selected Denise. She's ok and good to go. Made a deposit on the left side of her face. Tell her what you want and she will deliver. She's happy with .4. Emma Judy Pat Denise Monica were all there.

Unfortunately, the bad news. P & M is for sale per Dino and Mickey. Mable passed on to the next world. Funeral was last Monday.

Dont know what the new owners (if any) will do with the place. My opionion is that it only has value as a bar, although it could use some updating. Rumor has it that Mexicans will buy the place. That could be good for us in that the talent may improve.

Stopped by Friday evening. Sat and watched the NBA and shoot the shit with the locals. Emily came by and we chatted for a while she said that it was a bad day on the street and she only made .35 for the day. Complained of being hungry and without sleep for two days, go figure. Was there on a Mon. night about a week ago, Heavy white chick at the back door started hasslin for a buck. Jesus. Then she started to talk some trash for which I was in no mood. Did a few shots with the bartender who seemed really nice and I would have liked to have taken home to meet mom. Judy was really rushed and atypically annoying.

Too bad about M. going downhill. If I see her I'll be sure o drive her directly to Planned Parenthood. I'm not "father of the year material" but Jesus Christ!!

Otherwise the place was clean and comfortable without the usual loitering thugs standing in the corners.

Spent some time on 2 nites last week at P&M. The usual cast of characters including Michelle who I sessioned with. She is pregnant with twins and says she is getting an abortion. Still she is sweet and a total GFE pleaser, just tell her what you want her to do.

Charlene told me Mabel is in a nursing home and might not be with us much longer. The surviving sons plan to sell the place when she passes according to her. Low quality aside, this place is an institution with every woman being available for hire, low key, safe and friendly. Much like the bars in Mexico. Maybe the tradition will continue since East Chicago is in hispanic political hands now. Hey things could get better with the Mexican tradition of corruption. After all, it keeps the activity off the streets for the most part keeping the neighborhoods happy yet still offers consenting adults the opportunity to play. Enjoy it while you still can.

P&M is wired into the local LE and if you see them in the lot across the street
I think it's cover just to make sure everyone comes and goes in safety. They
aren't looking to bust you if you're driving safely.

Was at P & M's last night for a few and some observations. Several regulars were there with a couple new faces rushing in and then out. Bartender Felecia stated that one of the "workers" was drunk and others were getting her home (?). Two were doable but left before I could get a chance to negotiate. Michelle showed up and her appearance has gone downhill. Looked as though she had not slept in 6 days.

Any comments on the new food menu there?

Might be some action tonight around 7:30 PM or 8:00PM. A certain individual is celebrating a b-day there. I am pretty sure that she's a part time and not a bad looker, albeit, black.

Was there last night and here family was there in a pre celebratory mood. Family defined as mother and sister and her sister who works behind the bar.

Judy, Tameeka (who seems to have lost some weight) and Dot (?) and Felectia (bartender) were there. Had one virgin gin and left. Warm weather might bring on some partimers there.

My apologies, I certainly did not wish to harm the bargaining power of others. I'll be more careful in the future. I see transactions differently as I explained in the original post. Riley is basically right on here! In theory I can see paying extra for a service upgrade- MSOG, Anal, BBBJ rather than CBJ if you're thinking with the small head rather than safety, duos, etc.

The problem w/ P & M's girls in general (with the exception of occasional diamonds in the rough) is that they think once they have cheddar they should get you off quickly and split.
