Seriously, what we have now may suck due to the draconian laws but back then. Well, it truly sucked. There was no Internet so getting information about who does what, whether they are rip-offs or whatever was near impossible. And mid-1980's was the height of the AIDS / HIV scare so you had that thrown in the mix, too.
