Bust is part of push vs. Web-based prostitution

The oldest profession has happily adopted the most up-to-date technology, Nassau cops said yesterday in announcing the arrest of an alleged cyberpro.

Nassau Police said Ferdoas Ruzig Afani, 26, posted an ad for erotic services on the Web site craigslist.com and arranged to meet a customer, who was really an undercover cop, at a Marriott in Plainview. When she offered sex for cash, she was promptly arrested, police said.

"This is part of a continuing investigation going after prostitutes that are utilizing the Internet in Nassau County," Police Deputy Inspector Rick Capece said.

The inspector said undercover detectives surf the Web "all the time" in search of prostitutes soliciting sex over the Net.

But, he added, only some hookers get snagged.

"Usually, there's so many of them we would need hundreds of guys," he said of the girls who brazenly post pictures, and prices, on various Web sites.

Capece said the sites can potentially be used by teens, as customers and prostitutes.

"Kids are aware of it," he said. "This is dangerous, because [the sites] are ways to contact people. There's phone numbers on there. I'm very concerned with disease."

While cops cannot eradicate the world's oldest profession, their efforts can definitely stymie the market.

"It's a quality of life issue," Capece said, adding that several prostitution arrests have been made recently.

Meanwhile, vice cops are continuing the Web investigation, as well as an ongoing effort to bust Nassau County brothels that pose as Asian massage parlors.

Afani was arraigned yesterday on prostitution charges in 1st District Court in Hempstead.

Cops listed a Washington address for Afani. A secretary at her apartment complex said the place is owned by an Afani, but is rented out.

Attempts to reach Afani were unsuccessful. Cops said she is a student at American University in Washington.
