"A Virginia mother-and-daughter team pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal charges of operating a brothel in Springfield.

Agni Lisa Brown, 57, of Alexandria, and her daughter, Maria Antonietta Mourizaki, 37, also of Alexandria, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Alexandria to conspiracy to violate the Mann Act, a federal law barring people from knowingly providing transportation across state lines for individuals engaged in prostitution."

In a Shift, Anti-Prostitution Effort Targets Pimps and Johns

The john peeked into the massage parlor.

"Hi, sweetie," said Kim, the manager of the Korean-run club in downtown Washington.

The john, a tall man in his fifties, stepped inside, smiling anxiously. He wore a chaste white shirt and sharply parted hair, and he smelled as if he'd had a drink.

"Look at his face -- very tired," Kim said as he went inside. "Sad people come. Stress people. This customer stay 30 minutes, then happy. Everybody happy."

Not everybody. A national campaign against prostitution has intensified in political, nonprofit and law enforcement circles, so much so that yesterday the House unanimously passed novel legislation, with the Senate expected to follow.

In the past, police sweeps have focused on the women. The new federal law would grant state and local law enforcement agencies funds to investigate and prosecute the men -- brothel owners and pimps. It would also target for arrest customers like the one at Kim's parlor lurching toward a girl in a bikini.

"You're out of luck," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.), summing up the bill's message to the customers.

"The johns use and abuse these young women," said Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Ohio). "And pimps -- you can call them slaveholders, the masters out in the field."

The attitudes of Pryce, who introduced the legislation in the House, and Cornyn, a sponsor in the Senate, reflect a shift in how the government and the public respond to the sex industry. Traditionally, women have been blamed as the source of the problem. But Pryce calls prostitution "modern-day slavery" in which teenage girls are exploited and men fuel the crime.

Behind the scenes, an unlikely coalition of evangelicals, feminists, liberal activists and conservative human rights advocates are pushing the issue. They are trying to reframe the way people talk about prostitutes, calling them "survivors" and signing off e-mails with the slogan "Abolition!"

On a local level, in the past three years, 12 states have passed anti-sex-trafficking legislation, which says that women who are prostituted through coercion, and minors who are sold for sex, are victims. In 15 other states, similar bills have been introduced. Although prostitution is illegal nationwide except in certain Nevada counties, advocates for the legislation said that enforcement and penalties for pimps and johns have been weak, including a tolerance for brothels that advertise as massage parlors.

"We want to drive a stake through the heart of these venal criminals," said Michael J. Horowitz, a coalition leader and a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. "This is pure evil."

My guess is that it is American/Corfu that was aound Costco on Fullerton rd. Several people have reported that it was run by a Greek lady. I was never able to get in the door, so I can't do more than speculate. That place has been closed for several months. In fact, they had operated without advertising for many years, then they needed to advertise, I recall seeing an ad in the City paper. Less than a month after they advertised, they were shut down.

Of course, it's pure speculation. I don't know, but that's my guess. Could end up bad for their clients if that's the case.

A Virginia mother-and-daughter team pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal charges of operating a brothel in Springfield.

Agni Lisa Brown, 57, of Alexandria, and her daughter, Maria Antonietta Mourizaki, 37, also of Alexandria, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Alexandria to conspiracy to violate the Mann Act, a federal law barring people from knowingly providing transportation across state lines for individuals engaged in prostitution.

Prosecutors said the brothel, which was located at 7623 Fullerton Road, operated from 2000 to 2005 and employed prostitutes, most of whom were illegal immigrants brought into the country by human traffickers.

According to an indictment, Brown hired the prostitutes, advertised their services and paid the $1,100 monthly lease, while Mourizaki's role was secretarial: taking appointments, greeting customers and collecting payments.

Brown also pleaded guilty to money laundering for funneling proceeds from the brothel into bank accounts and using the money to buy cars and houses, prosecutors said. Brown faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, while Mourizaki faces a maximum of five years' imprisonment.

The brothel was lucrative for Brown, providing her with well over $1 million, according to the indictment.

Brown deposited $731,432 in bank accounts over five years and used $633,504 to purchase homes in Alexandria, Cape Charles, Va., and Wilmington, N.C., prosecutors said. They said authorities also recovered $168,900 in cash from Brown's Alexandria home.

The indictment states that Brown frequently advertised the brothel's services in the Washington City Paper, placing ads that offered "a friendly international staff and rooms and showers for relaxation."

Brown and Mourizaki's employees allegedly often traveled vast distances to meet clients, sometimes going as far as California, according to prosecutors.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. A mother and daughter who prosecutors say ran a brothel in Springfield are pleading guilty to assorted charges.

Investigators say it was a lucrative business for Agni Brown and her daughter, Maria Mourizaki. Open six days a week, 13 hours a day, the feds say that in four years, Brown deposited more than 730-thousand dollars in cash into her bank accounts. She also bought more than 600-grand worth of property and cars. And when they searched her home, another 168-grand in cash turned up.

Brown faces up to 15 years behind bars. She'll forfeit two Virginia homes, an S-U-V and thousands in cash. She also has to pay back taxes on her ill-gotten gains. The daughter could get up to five years in prison.

Prosecutors say many of the prostitutes were brought into the U-S by human traffickers, though there's no indications Brown and her daughter were involved in that.
