If you aren't Hi Speed / Low Drag I would advise staying where most the Gringos stay, that's the neighborhood of El Poblado. You can cab everywhere from there and they have a nice night club scene.

Downtown in El Centro where I stay gets a little dangerous after dark. Real late it gets a little Dawn of the Dead meets Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

If you don't speak any Spanish I'd go with someone who does or you can try the Mansion, a hotel that stocks girls by the pool and bar for their guests, some of them will speak some english.

I lived in Costa Rica for 5 years and Panama for 3 months so I get by in the culture and language just fine.

The downtown area can be dangerous, esp at night and it is best not to look too American, ie no shorts, sandals, fancy watch, jewery, Galaxy 8, etc and keep most your money in the bank and withdraw as needed, I also use a money belt with my ATM card and cash under my clothes with some pocket money in the front pockets, no back pockets as they like all big cities have some pickpockets, also I leave my passport in the room and carry a photo-copy of it in case I need it.

Also best not to leave your drink untended or let a girl you don't know make you one as they sometimes will slip some scopolamine in it, it will make you very susceptible to suggestion at 1st, then you will be unconscious for the next 24 hours and wake up to your room cleared out.

Mate just a question how much total did you spent on this trip. Air fare, hotel, food, fun. And did you transfer curency there or in the states?

I got some Colombian peso's in the mail from Bank of America before I went and then just hit the ATM's 1 to 2 times a day.

Budget wise my flight was $230, parking in MIA was $49, hotel was $130 for 5 nights and my daily fun budget was $200 for food, fun, girls (3 a day avg including a over night girl) taxis, souvenirs etc. That would go way down if I just did the $10 redlight specials and some girls in their clubs but I like some over night fun and 9/10's from the strip clubs too.

So about $1400 total for 6 days/5 nights and 14 times with 9 different girls. (the over night girl gets a PM and AM tryst and some were invited back due to outstanding performance)

If you stay at Hotel Botero, good cheap food avail 24 hr, go out lobby, go right, go to corner, go right, next corner on right, called "Brase Pan" (menus attached).

Heck, even their McDonalds has better food, chicken, beans & rice, salad and drink for about $3.

For 24 hr ATM's, go out lobby, go right to corner, cross road and a little left go up stairs into small restaurant, go thru to hotel Nutribara and go right and right, 2 atm machines indoor and safe there. After restaurant hrs you go go around front and into hotel lobby, in, past frt desk, go left / right.

Just tell them you want a fan and fridge in your room and you want a room for 2 people and I prefer the back of the building, the front gets a little hot with the sun in the AM and a little noisy.

Tell cab drivers it is behind the Hotel Nutribara where the buses from the airport park. (the 1 hr ride from the airport is only $3 on the bus and they end up 1/2 block from the hotel, just tell the bus driver you are going to Hotel Nutribara to get the right bus, I think both routes end up there but one is faster, you need the "autopista" route.

It's on this map I made and so is most of the action. Warning, I think the red light zone to the right around Parque Bolivar is mostly trannies. My fav strip clubs downtown are Conejitas and Barre Exceutiva, both a block and a half from the hotel.
