I've been lucky enough to stay in contact with a lot of old friends. I can't overstate the importance of using WeChat with Chinese friends. Also, learn their real names. WeChat has a section for each contact where you can put (free-form) related information, like names, family members, addresses, workplace, any relevant information you want to remember for each contact.
