Why would you ban somebody that has proven themselves to be troublesome when all they have to do is create a new user and start all over again? It just doesn't work. IP banning was a great idea in the 90's but today, now that mobile devices are Natting using IP6 to Hex, from a technological standpoint it's unworkable. How exactly do you propose to identify these members that simply unplug their modem, go take a piss, then plug it back in and get a new IP addy from their ISP? I guess we could have the Russians develop some kind of script to automatically hack their routers to get past the local IP and try and harvest MAC addy's but that seems pretty intrusive, and most likely against the law, so while it would be effective I think we have to take a pass on it. I am curious though how you would crack the "positive identification on a forum designed to be anonymous" nut. Right now if somebody successfully is able to serve a warrant for our data in whatever country it happens to be sitting in today and we fully comply with the search the only "personal" data we can offer is that the User Account Gimmymorepussy, has an email account at Ilovepussy@gmail.com what you propose would be rock solid identification and I'm not sure the growing membership you envision would be comfortable with that. And guys who don't want to put the info in are not helpful anyway. The reason doesn't matter. They aren't helping build a useful site in the first place. By enforcing this over time you will create a 'virtuous cycle' that reinforces value delivering activities and punishes non-valuable activities.

3. Allow members to vote reviews up or down and display this "reputation" score for each member and review. Putting the measurement of value on the community rather than the admin is how actually valuable communities get built. But of course, this won't work if step 1 & 2 are not followed.

4. Stop policing the commentary on reviews. But you should first create two classes of posts. One that is a review and then the other that is a comment on a review. This way guys who are looking for reviews can jsust skip all the convo and get to the meat but can also see the back and forth and any given review. This would also eliminate the need for a separate thread of commentary like "Take it outside fellas".

5. Proper forum admin. Some men will get out of line. The admin should make clear what is acceptable in convos about any review (if steps 1-4 have been followed) and then delete comments that are out of bounds. Create a "Two strike rule" - one violation gets you a warning, the second and you are banned. For good. And also block their IP address. All communities will have people who can't be responsible and getting rid of them makes the community more useful and valuable, which is what attracts new, valuable information and participants. But segmenting out so much of the convo to another thread destroys a huge amount of value.

Bottom line? Whoever runs this has no idea how to build an effective community. FYI, I would typically charge at least 2 k to give this kind of critical review and specific recommendations to a site. I will decide whether I continue here based on the reaction I get to this. If I'm told I'm an asshole or a knowitall or whatever, I'm gone. But if whoever runs this shitheap wants some help, I'll be glad to talk offline and even help. Make a choice. But right now this place is next to useless for most mongers.

1. We used to take a hard line against having chicks involved. We started experimenting in a few cities and found that forums are just like bars, if you get the chicks the guys follow. Sock accounts are an issue, but as with any crowdsourced model over time they reveal themselves. When an account only posts about one person I restrict them from doing so. I tell them they can talk about anybody except the one they have been and just delete any future posts where they do. More about this in number 5 because it's related.

2. Great idea, we are developing it at this time. We are in the process of launching a classified site right now (it will be coming here soon) and we want to add "Review me on the USASG" buttons to the chicks ads as well as a "Read my reviews on the USASG." You're correct, in order to do that we have to have quantifiable data on the chicks beyond "Saw Christina." I have to tell you though, it's harder than you think. Also by getting more quantifiable data we can start working on more robust search.

3. Same thing here, the Russians are working on the code right now.

4. The members seem to like the Chronological order, personally I would have three different types, Reviews, Commentary, and Questions. I would organize it so that all commentary on a post went below the OP like Reddit, but again, the membership seems to like what we have.

I have to say I do take exception to this comment "The way this is run ensures it will never grow large" we are pretty happy with the 700,000 registered members across our sites and think that's not bad for three guys working from home. The USASG alone has over 50,000 active (logging in last month) members. Not the largest, but again for three full time guys and some crazy Russian contractors writing code we are pretty proud of it.
