Research is being conducted on people who take herpes supressive medication such as Valtrex or Acyclovir to see if it helps prevent transmission. So far, it appears to do just that as well as prevent subsequent outbreaks. I had unprotected sex for five years with a woman who had herpes and never caught a thing. We just didn't do anything when she had an outbreak, which was rare.

And its usually only the first outbreak of herpes that is fairly severe. When she would get an outbreak, she'd get these teeny tiny little sores that you could barely see with the naked eye. They'd itch very slightly and be gone in a couple/three days. And this would happen maybe once or twice a year. On the other hand, when I get a small scratch on the arm picking blackberries, it takes a week (or more) to heal and is more painful.

To break up with, or not enjoy sex to the fullest with a partner that has herpes is foolish. Herpes is a very minor disease, right up there with getting a chancor sore. What freaks everybody out so much is that it is an STD. And with new medication, your first outbreak will probably be your last.

I have not heard about herpes for years. This STD has been knocked off the radar by more serious (meaning lethal) STDs but now a lady I'm dating has told me that she has genital herpes.

I've done research online and keep coming up with warnings about "having sex" or about "having sexual contact" with someone who has herpes. But what I need to know is what they mean by "having sex" and "sexual contact." Does that mean intercourse or does it include even touching her intimately (with my hands and fingers, not performing oral sex on her).

Its also not clear to me if I can safely have intercourse with a condom during times when she does NOT have an outbreak.

I need DETAILED info, not polite generalizations. Does anyone know where I can get this? Also, I'm looking for REAL info, not just rumors.

Why are non latex condoms so much more expensive than latex condoms? As a latex allergy sufferer i find this infuriatingly costly!

Itchyyawn, I'm sorry to inform you but that's a terrible idea. The only type patients who would benefit from long-term low dose antibiotics might be people with advanced AIDS, Cancer, etc., to whom any type of infection might prove fatal.

As you probably know, the body is home to thousands of beneficial types of bacteria, many of which ward off disease and keep us healthy. We take acidophilus for example to keep our gastroinstestinal area healthy. You are proposing killing off all the good bacteria in your body. Your opening yourself up to all kinds of physical problems.

In addition, when you stop taking the antibiotics, you will inundated with infection after infection since your body has lost it's ability to fight disease. You will then take more antibiotics and cause some strains to become resistant. And on and on.

Quit trying to play doctor. If it were a good idea your doctor would probably of suggested it by now.

I am planning to take regular doses of azithromycin (Zithromax) as vaccine against chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea (250mg/day). What are the long term health implications from regular intake of this type of antibiotic? Do you think it will be effective?

I modify one point in my reply regarding the "12% failure rate of condoms in preventing pregnancy" given in Gulfro's post. Now I would guess this was a study that followed couples around for a length of time, and 12% was after many sexual encounters. For example, if a couple uses condoms as the sole birth control for 2 years they may have a fairly high accumulated chance of pregnancy. Similar considerations apply to the risks of STDs, but there are different factors to consider. For one thing, there's the transmission probability. I remember reading somewhere it is on the order of 1% for HIV (and there's an asymmetry between man-to-woman and woman-to-man but we'll ignore that). For pregnancy there are inefficiencies as well, which include the fraction in each ovulation period that a woman can become pregnant (10% there, plus whatever other inefficiencies there are). Another difference is that nearly all men are capable of making a woman pregnant, but only a small fraction of people have HIV, about 2% in the Western countries.

It is worthwhile to estimate one's accumulated risk for various sex acts. Let's take vaginal sex as an example and assume the condom breakage rate is 1%, the transmission probability for HIV is 1% (note, for other STDs like Clamydia it is much higher !), and that prostitutes have the same HIV rate as the general population (2%). Let's do the estimate for a 20 year "career" of a monger visiting a different prostitute each week. So that's 1000 sex acts. Doing the math we get an accumulated risk of 0.2% that he gets HIV in 20 years. For some people that may be bad enough to modify their behaviour (it certainly did for me !) but I think its not enough to make a noticable change in the population's overall HIV statistics. On the other hand, if prostitution or other prosmicuity is common, due to cultural reasons, and you take away condom usage, the risks skyrocket by roughly a factor of 100.

By these rough estimates, I think one can understand the runaway situation in Africa as opposed to Europe, for example, where condom usage is much higher.
