I'm totally ignorant on this matter and would like to be as safe as possible with my personal information. Also, I read here sometime back about blocking your number and I read where you can use an internet supplied number for privacy. Any information on this would me much appreciated.

They go after the low hanging fruit among us mere mongers, like someone careless enough to respond to a BP ad without research that turns out to be a sting, or unlucky enough to just be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Nothing wrong with paying cash for it of course, but not really necessary I don't think. Just my $.02.
