Macedonia -- Police say that in addition to arresting women on prostitution charges at Highland Road motels, they have begun targeting prospective clients, arresting nine men on charges of solicitation over four hours at a motel where they set up a sting operation Dec. 5.
One of the men, a 67-year-old North Canton resident, was also charged with fourth-degree felony trafficking in drugs because he offered to pay the department's confidential informant with his prescription Xanax, said Police Lt. Vince Yakopovich.
The other eight men charged with solicitation, a third-degree misdemeanor, included two from Medina, ages 24 and 47, two from Stow, ages 26 and 44, a 61-year-old from Aurora, a 53-year-old from Avon, a 27-year-old from Canton and a 39-year-old from Streetsboro.
Yakopovich said police made the Dec. 5 arrests between noon and 4 pm, adding the department used their informant to place an ad on the escort section of backpage.com the previous day. He said that within one day, the department got 170 responses from prospective clients who either texted or phoned to inquire about the informant's "services. ".
The men who were arrested had arranged to meet for sex or solicited sex at the motel, Yakopovich said.
He declined to name the motel where the arrests were made, stating the department is continuing its investigation.
Yakopovich said that by cracking down, the department hopes to force such business to move out of the city.
"Guys will think twice before answering an ad that's in Macedonia," he said.
Police have been making regular arrests of prostitutes by posing as men seeking sex at three of the city's motels on Highland Road. Yakopovich said the department has conducted nine such operations over the past year at the Motel 6, Days Inn and La Quinta Inn, arresting nine women.
Representatives from the three businesses either declined to comment or did not return phone calls to respond.
