Witness recounts vodka-soaked day that led to Southfield slaying

Free Press Staff Writer
Camille Phillips said she was high on pot and drunk off at least a liter of vodka when she found herself in a vehicle June 17 with four people, now accused in the fatal shooting of a West Bloomfield man.
Phillips testified today in Southfield’s 46th District Court against Kevin Huffman, 28, of Detroit, James Randle, 35, of Detroit, Jessica Ermatinger, 23, of Canton and Lynn Coggins, 37, of Oak Park – all facing homicide felony murder and armed robbery charges in the death of Venkata Subramanya-Reddy Cattamanchi at the EZ Rest motel in Southfield, police have said.
According to police, Cattamanchi set up a date with Ermatinger, possibly through an escort service. Ermatinger, though, allegedly conspired with the others to rob him.
Phillips testified that she wasn’t aware of any plans to rob anyone.
Witness split a pint and two liters of vodka, smoked pot
Phillips, of Detroit, testified that on the afternoon of June 16, Coggins came over to her house on the west side of Detroit and the two began drinking, and into the early morning hours of June 17.
A high school-aged teen also testified today to what he saw in the parking lot.
Phillips said that after finishing off a pint of Seagram’s vodka, Coggins and Phillips split two liters of Pinnacle vodka. It was around 3 p.m. June 16 when most of the drinking started, she said.
Phillips said she had smoked pot earlier in that day as well.
“How much did you drink?” Jerome Sabbota, Huffman’s attorney, asked.
“Enough,” Phillips testified.
She said Coggins made a call using Phillips’ cell phone and the two women then drove away in a Dodge Durango and went to a home in Detroit that Phillips had never been to before. Phillips said Coggins soon came out with Ermatinger and Huffman, who Phillips said she didn’t know, and Randle, who Phillips knew, but only by a nickname.
Phillips testified that she sat in the front passenger seat, Coggins drove and the other three piled into the rear seats.
Phillips said that as they drove, Ermatinger used her cell phone, getting directions from someone to a Wendy’s restaurant on Telegraph in Southfield. Once there, Ermatinger got out of the Durango and the other four pulled into a parking lot next door for the EZ Rest Motel, Phillips testified.
She said Randle said they had to wait there for Ermatinger to come back.
About 10 minutes later, Randle and Huffman exited the Durango, Phillips testified.
Phillips said she and Coggins waited, listening to loud music, drifting in and out of a drunken, drugged-out haze.
A young, high school-aged teen, whom the Free Press is not identifying because of his age, testified that he was in motel parking lot in a car with his mother and brother when he saw a gold Honda pull into the parking lot and the driver get out.
Ermatinger also got out of the Honda and walked to the motel’s management office, the teen said.
The teen said he then saw two men approach the Honda’s driver, and then four gunshots blazed. The two men ran toward a Durango parked nearby, the teen testified, while the victim moaned and fell to the ground.
“He was like, ‘Ahhh!’” the teen testified.
Meanwhile, Phillips said at least two gunshots shocked her as they exploded louder than the booming music in the Durango.
“They just sounded loud,” she testified.
Ermatinger, Randle and Huffman ran back toward the Durango, the two men passing a wallet between them, and piled into the back seat, Phillips said.
‘”I didn’t know what to think,” Phillips testified. “I didn’t know whose wallet it was.”
Then, she said, the men urged them to drive away.
“They told us to go,” Phillips said. “Like, ‘Go, go, go.’”
People were scattering all over the motel parking lot, the teen testified.
The teen said that as the Durango pulled out, the teen’s mother peeled out, too, burning rubber with her tires, heading for Telegraph Road, with the Durango on their tail.
“My mom thought they were chasing us,” the teen testified.
The Durango headed south toward Detroit, turned down a street into a residential neighborhood and pulled into a driveway to turn around, Phillips said.
Then Coggins saw a police car, Phillips said.
Huffman jumped out of the Durango and Randle tried, but was stopped by police, Phillips said. All were arrested, but Phillips was not charged.
The exam and testimony will continue July 21. If convicted on the murder charges, Huffman, Randle, Ermatinger and Coggins face life in prison.

I've seen her ads for a long while now. Never paid a visit though. I went to the WDIV news channel website and you can watch the report on there. I'm having the feeling that LE are going to really start tightening up on the "massage" side of this industry here in Michigan. DETROIT (WXYZ). Geoffrey Fieger is always making headlines. This time he's suggesting Detroit should be like Amsterdam. Where cannabis can be bought in coffee shops and prostitution is legal.
He says Detroit should become a hip, young and exciting city.
The famed attorney, and potential mayoral candidate in Detroit, says this is what could work for the struggling city.
Fieger says traditional ideas like tax breaks for corporations just aren't working to bring people into Detroit.
He says his vision is simple. A clean and safe city, with good parks, mixed in with some adult entertainment.
Fieger says he's stil considering a run for Mayor. He says he'll do it if Mayor Dave Bing decides not to run.

A former dancer at the Penthouse Club on 8 Mile Road in Detroit is suing her former employer.
Erica Tucker claims her supervisors wanted her to act more like a prostitute than a stripper. And when she refused to sell her body, she alleges that they fired her.
Now Tucker wants them to pay, in court. She's filed a wrongful termination lawsuit. As you'd imagine, the club has a very different version of events. FOX 2's Simon Shaykhet talked to both sides.
I highly doubt any club will would try and force any dancer to do anything she does not want to. The club says she was fired for other reasons. Probably not paying her fees to the club.

Yea that one has been around for awhile. It would be nice to see it get more use and develop instant updates as people text reports in from their smart phones. An I-app possibly? Would be great for road trips. I got pulled over in a county wide drug dragnet over the holiday because "I fit the profile". I can't say much about it without outting myself but it was some of the silliest shit I've yet to experience from LE. The cop was completely cool and respectful about things, but it was silly as hell and he did tell me about 10 bs lies right from the start to justify his actions. In the end, not even a minor ticket and we parted ways.

ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK). There is more scandal in the Romulus Police Department. There are allegations that officers were buying sex with public money, and now the former chief has been arrested.
FOX 2's Charlie LeDuff Reports that details are sketchy at the moment and the arraignment of several Romulus police officers has been postponed until Tuesday.
Outgoing Romulus Police Chief Michael St. Andre, His wife and five officers were arrested Monday following a three year investigation into the department by Michigan State Police.
The exact charges are currently unclear, but we can tell you that it has to do with the misappropriation of public funds.
Last March, State Police raided St. Andre's home and his wife's tanning salon and took computers.
Also, the chief, a 28 year veteran of the department, is said to have okayed the use of public money on prostitutes by undercover officers conducting an investigation at The Landing Strip Gentleman's club.
The scandal even has the manager of The Landing Strip annoyed.
"Bring your own money, of course. Spend your own money. That's the way to do it. Don't spend other people's money. Spend your own money," said Has Murray.
"Very shocking," said current Romulus Police Chief Robert Dickerson. "This was the culmination of a three year investigation by the Michigan State Police and the FBI, and, unfortunately for the six, today was D-Day."
Dickerson was asked whether this was an indictment on Romulus or the police department.
"Absolutely not," he responded."The Romulus Police Department is not under indictment right now. It's the individuals that are under indictment."
"To get news like this of charges, I mean it hurts. It hurts all of them. What I'm hoping is that from this point forward, at least we know what we're faced with. There are charges brought. We believe in a judicial system. They are innocent until proven guilty," said Romulus Mayor Pro-Tem Leroy Burcroff. "We have a new chief and he's tasked with rebuilding. That's what we're looking forward to doing. So, yes, it's a devastating day for us."

ROMULUS. Four Romulus police officers have been suspended without pay for 30 days for "conduct unbecoming of an officer" in connection with their roles in an undercover operation.
The names of the officers and the specific details behind the behavior that led to their discipline have not been released, in accordance with city personnel rules and restrictions within the police officers' collective bargaining agreement.
New Chief of Police Robert Dickerson, who took the action against the officers, said "that all four police officers suspended today violated the Police Officers Standards of Conduct by overstepping their authority while engaging in conduct unbecoming of a police officer while working on an undercover investigation."
Dickerson was appointed Romulus chief of police on Monday by Mayor Alan R. Lambert. The new chief, a retired 25-year veteran of the Wayne County Sheriff's Department, has extensive experience in handling matters involving police discipline.
He succeeded Michael St. Andre, a 28-year Romulus officer who had been chief during a long investigation into the Police Department by the Michigan State Police. St. Andre submitted a letter of resignation on September 13, citing illnesses of his son and wife.
Romulus Mayor Alan R. Lambert said the suspensions stemmed from the city's own internal investigation that he initiated after reviewing police reports that came to light during the inquiry into Romulus police matters by the State Police.

He agreed the actions were inappropriate and we took it upon ourselves to discipline the officers. We concluded that these four officers should be immediately suspended without pay."
Chief Dickerson expressed disappointment with the former chief for condoning the questionable behavior of the four officers as well as for his lack of oversight as it relates to this particular investigation.
"Unfortunately, the four suspended police officers reported directly to the former chief on all of their investigations and, by doing so, received minimal supervision and direction," Chief Dickerson said."However, that didn't give them the right to engage in this manner."
Mayor Lambert, who is a former police officer, said: "I support Chief Dickerson's findings and actions taken today and I'm hopeful this sends a message that is loud and clear that our police officers are to be held to a higher standard and cannot engage in irresponsible, dangerous and reckless behaviors on or off duty. Inappropriate conduct will not be tolerated within the Romulus Police Department."

The colored tickets designated free one-hour or 30 minutes appointments with the providers.
Informants, e-mails, PayPal accounts and other records led authorities to the suspects, who were under surveillance.
The case was investigated by the FBI and the Southeast Michigan Crimes Against Children Task Force.

As the pointed out the powers that be are aware of this site but why draw added attention? Did he cut a deal with the Feebs to get out after rolling over? It would be a shame if so, since AES is the source of the original complaints and raffled off prosititution services at their parties.
Thai always maintained that he had a plan in place that would protect the member information should he go down.

- Third, I don't live in the USA, and thus is would be extremely difficult and very expensive for anyone to even attempt to serve me with any legal documents.
- Fourth, my company is incorporated in Uruguay, which as very strict corporate secrecy laws.
- Fifth, and most importantly, in the 8 years I have been running my forums I have NEVER been contacted by ANY law enforcement organization, period. It's never happened, but if it ever did I would tell them to fuck off and that would be the end of the conversation.

Not sure where Eq is getting his info. From the news reports and the criminal complaint, I would say that all three were picked up on the same day (it was signed on the day they were picked up). Not sure why Thaifood was held, maybe he couldn't make bail. The two that got out on bail were a cpa and an attorney. The complaint reports more dirt on aes (numbersguy) than ev (thai) , but that doesn't matter because the feds are going to sweat them all to plea something.

up until last week, i was a member on all 3 boards. i started off on the boards almost a decade ago on the original sg. i am very saddened for what has happened to these men. however, i have no sympathy for the guilty parties that particpated in **** activites. honestly, they should have known better, and i won't even expound on the stupidity of the drug issue. i also have more questions in my mind then answers, and i believe alot more info will be forthcoming from the trials. part of me wonders if this is not a a spinoff of the issues from the arrest of a well known provider back in 2008, that had a hand in the closing of sg. i'm not 100% convinced all the dos attacks were from le. they have niether accepted responsibility or made any mention of masterminding those attacks. logically, it doesn't make sense. regardless, without proof that it was a banned member, another board looking to grow their base membership or the feds, there will be alot of women sol. i have counceled these ladies for years to expand their advertising to national boards and other resources other then putting all their eggs into one basket ie local boards. i i really hope these men have good lawyers and i am sending warm thoughts and prayers their way.

thaifood is a good guy and a great admin. he was always fair in his dealings with people. he had my back on more then one occassion, without expecting anything in return, and for that i owe him a debt of gratitude. i have to agree with the general consensus that its looking like the other 2 rolled and hung him out to dry. i seriously doubt that they will walk out of this without consequences, but they will probably receive a lighter sentence. karma's a *****, but the problem with karma is, your very rarely allowed a peek at the end result!

there is a romeo and juliet clause against prosecution for age 15 and under. i think it's 2 or 3 years but don't hold me on that one.

Pontiac — A 72-year-old man died while driving on Woodward Avenue Saturday after police say he had sexual intercourse with a woman who has a history of prostitution.
The man slumped over the steering wheel as they drove on Woodward near Whittemore Street about 2:30 pm and the woman flagged down a passerby to call for help, Oakland County sheriff's officials said. The man was taken to Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital where he was pronounced dead, sheriff's officials said. The woman, who wasn't identified, was arrested on an outstanding warrant charging her with an unrelated prostitution act, sheriff's officials said. She initially didn't cooperate with deputies, but later admitted she had sex with the man earlier that day and he complained several times of shortness of breath related to an asthmatic condition, sheriff's officials said. The woman said she and the dead man didn't use drugs during their encount.

The real merit of the boards was for clients to get to know the ladies and arrange meetings which had nothing to do with the parties. I would guess that 80 to 90% of the members never went to a party.

Five accused of running online prostitution ring dubbed 'Detroit Pink'

Five southeast Michigan residents accused of running an online prostitution ring and human trafficking in drugs and sex face a laundry list of felony charges including racketeering, Attorney General Bill Schuette announced this afternoon.
The five include [Personal Name deleted by Admin]. 31, of Detroit; his estranged wife, [Personal Name deleted by Admin]. 32, of Chesterfield Township; [Personal Name deleted by Admin]. 29, of Warren; [Personal Name deleted by Admin]. 25, of Detroit; and [Personal Name deleted by Admin]. 31, of Detroit. They are scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Southfield.
According to the attorney general, the [Personal Name deleted by Admin] were ringleaders of the group, which operated for a time from the website 'Detroit Pink, ' providing prostitutes for $300 an hour, including one who told investigators she was only 15 years old when she was in the Muhammads' employ. [Personal Name deleted by Admin] is also accused of forcing one woman to serve as a drug runner, bringing a shipment from Texas to Michigan against her will.
The two other women facing charges were 'the most trusted prostitutes, ' Schuette said, allegedly collecting the proceeds and otherwise facilitating the operation. [Personal Name deleted by Admin] was the group's 'computer guy, ' and occasionally provided transportation for prostitutes, authorities said.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI and State Police through the Southeast Michigan Crimes Again Children Task Force.

An investigation is underway after two bodies were found burned inside a vehicle on Detroit's east side.
Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee held a public safety announcement Monday afternoon. The chief said Sunday's deaths were related to the deaths of two Detroit women found in a car trunk on Dec. 19 on Promenade Avenue. All four deaths have been ruled homicides.
Godbee said that three of the four women were involved in an adult dating service listed at Backpage. Com.
On Sunday, Detroit firefighters responded to a call on a fire at Lannette Street and Queen Street at about 1 am The two bodies were found inside the trunk of a burning Buick LeSabre, which was inside the garage of a home.
The bodies were burned beyond recognition, police said. However, police said the bodies were of a 28-year-old woman and a 29-year-old woman and that the women worked for an escort service listed at Backpage. Com.
"We have tentative identifications," Godbee said.
On Dec. 19, 23-year-old Renesha Landers and her 24-year-old cousin, Denesha Hunt, were found dead in the trunk of Landers' 2009 Chrysler 300 parked between abandoned houses on Promenade Avenue near Chalmers Street.
"At this time we are awaiting the medical examiner's final report on both incidents relative to the proximate cause of death of all four individuals," Godbee said."Three of the four females have a connection to a website titled.

The chief said adult dating services are listed on the site. The site is a place to buy and sell things and also has personal ads.
"We implore people to be careful and always let someone know exactly when and where that intend on meeting this person or persons, which should be in a public place," Godbee said."Our sole purpose is for the public to be cognizance of this website when engaged in adult activities."

Detroit police may be on the hunt for a killer who might be targeting escorts after it was discovered that three of the four women found dead this month are linked to sex-related advertisements on Backpage. Com, police said Monday.
The website includes dozens of come-hithers from metro Detroit escorts offering exotic fantasies and erotic playtime.
"This tie for us is disconcerting," Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. Said Monday."We're stopping short of calling it a serial pattern."
The women were found dead in pairs: Demesha Hunt. 24, and Renisha Landers. 23, both of Detroit, were discovered about 3 pm Dec. 19 in the trunk of a 2009 Chrysler 300C on the 14900 block of Promenade.
Two more women, their names not yet released by police, were found burned beyond recognition about 1 am Sunday in the trunk of a 1997 Buick LeSabre parked in a garage on the 14900 block of Lannette, according to Godbee. They were 28 and 29.
Detroit police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens declined Monday to say how police figured out the escort connection or who owned the cars the bodies were discovered in.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, police said, but they are treating the incidents as suspicious deaths and have homicide investigators working the cases.
Godbee said during a news conference Monday that police had a "moral obligation" to share the information about the deaths with the public."With the vast increase in the utilization of social media and the Internet, we must continue to be vigilant in identifying any website which may potentially pose a threat to individuals," he said.
Backpage. Com is like Craigslist, offering ads ranging from pets for sale and computer services to real estate and body rubs. The Detroit Police Department had not made contact with the website's administration, Godbee said Monday.
Chicago attorney Samuel Fifer, a lawyer for Backpage. Com, declined to comment Monday night. The website is owned by Phoenix-based Village Voice Media.
Efforts to reach relatives of Hunt and Landers by phone or via Twitter were unsuccessful.
"They're devastated," Godbee said, describing the reaction of the victims' families.
At the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office, an unidentified employee declined to comment on any details surrounding the four deaths.
This is not the first time Backpage. Com has turned up in a criminal matter.
Earlier this month, a woman was indicted in federal court in Detroit after police said she sent a 16-year-old girl on hundreds of sex dates and pocketed 40% of her earnings.
The FBI learned about the woman, Satoria Youngblood, after responding to an ad on Backpage. Com that read: "New To Your Town. Hot! Sexy! & The Best Around."
Turned out, the escort was a minor, who was caught in an undercover operation Nov. 4 at the Extended Stay Hotel in Southfield, records show.
Her arrest triggered child pornography charges against Youngblood, who remains incarcerated pending trial.
Backpage. Com was not charged in the incident.
A similar tale recently unfolded in Missouri. However, in that case, a minor sued Backpage. Com, saying the website aided in child prostitution by allowing her pimp to post nude photos of her in ads, records show.
In August, a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit, holding that while the minor endured "horrific victimization" at the hands of her pimp, Backpage. Com was protected by the Communications Decency Act, which shields online companies from liability for what others post online.
Meanwhile, the pimp in the Missouri case was sentenced last December to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to prostitution charges.
Tampa attorney Paul DeCailly, who represents escort services in a variety of litigation, said he strongly doubts that Backpage. Com will face any liability in the Detroit deaths, should it turn out the women were targeted because they were escorts.
"The ads are what bring two people together," he said."To start holding everyone liable for what happens in response to that ad would be quite an extension of liability."
Last September, Craigslist yanked its ad section for sex-related services after years of pressure, including a letter from 17 state attorneys general who argued the site was rampant with prostitution ads.
With Craigslist out of the picture, Backpage. Com became the new leader in adult services ads, making $24. 3 million in the last 12 months in revenues from those ads, according to research from the Advanced Interactive Media Group in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
In October. 36 clergy ran a full-page ad in the New York Times, demanding Village Voice Media remove the adult ads from Backpage. Com. A coalition of 21 attorneys general, including Michigan's, made a similar request in a 2010 letter.
Backpage. Com refused and contended on its website: "Backpage. Com is committed to preventing those who are intent on misusing the site for illegal purposes."
On Monday, Godbee advised that if you are thinking about meeting someone from the Internet, tell someone you know exactly when and where you plan to meet the person. And then do so in a public place.
"Deciding to meet unknown persons via the Internet can be extremely dangerous," he said."Our sole purpose is for the public to be cognizant of this website when engaged in adult activities."
At 7:57 pm Monday, someone posted a warning on Backpage. Com. In part: "Never go any where with just anybody. If U no some crazy person that U have seen recently & he tried to really harm U, I would contact the Detroit Police Department."
More than two dozen women who posted ads on Backpage. Com did not return calls from Free Press reporters seeking comment.

From the reports that I've seen, it sounds as if BP has been proactive in dealing with this situation. They claimed to have furnished LE the number of times and ads that these ladies had reportedly posted as well as other ads that they had placed on numerous other websites. With the shitstorm that could well hit as a reslt of these crimes it seems like BP is doing what they can to be out in front of the problem.
Also, from reading some of these posts, it is always a good idea to use a throwaway phone in your. Endeavors. It's not a perfect solution, but its pretty good for now.

DETROIT (WJBK). DETROIT (WJBK). Two bodies were found at Proctor and Panama on Detroit's southwest side after 3:00 a. M. Monday. In an alley, a man who says he saw what led up to this and what came after, calling on us to tell the story. The smell of smoke making him wonder what was going on.
"There was two black guys that got out of it, and they [were] here for about ten minutes. They left, went down, came back and then stopped again and got out the car. I don't know what they [were] doing," he tells us.
"I [didn't] even think [anything] of it. Two hours later, another car, that's when all the police and everybody came back."
Investigators say the badly burned bodies are that of a white man and a white women. We put the man that talked to us and didn't want to be identified in touch with the lead investigator in the case.
We can tell you that investigators are trying to figure out exactly what happened to these two people. Were they bound? They found some kind of a cord laying on top of their burnt bodies.
"With all the bodies being burned around, it's just kind of scary to know. That kind of stuff is going on," says neighbor Michael Pompa.
It may be some time before the bodies are identified. Neighbors are frightened knowing the killer or killers are still out there.
"This is too close to home. I only live a few blocks from here and it's like scary to come out at night, even in the daytime really," one woman remarks.
Detroit Police are only telling us that, at this point, it's going to be very hard to identify those bodies. The medical examiner's office is working on that right now.
In the meantime, if you have any information about what happened to this John and Jane Doe, you're asked to do the right thing, pick up the phone and call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

Just caught channel 7's 11 pm newscast. They were doing an investigation on D. P. D. Inappropriately citing citizens for loitering in a known drug and prostitution area. They were interviewing a guy who was stopped by D. P. D. And cited for the sole reason of driving on J. R. Alone. Officers told him they knew why he was in the area, and to call his wife. He made a complaint. Investigation showed all loitering citations issued that were taken to court were dismissed by the courts. Currently a class action lawsuit was filed in federal court, I believe civil rights violation against D. P. D. No comment by the D. P. D. At this time.

That ad was on Backpage. Com, the same online service linked to the deaths of three women who were killed and their bodies later dumped in Detroit.
An undercover officer called the telephone number advertised and arranged for him and another officer to meet a prostitute for services. The officers went to the motel and met with Martin and Patterson, who were arrested for prostitution. Officers also found marijuana in the room.
Police say Martin and Patterson both had several warrants for their arrest, although they wouldn't elaborate further.
'Both of them, along the lines of larceny, assault and battery, there was a probation violation warrant out for one of the individuals for one of his assault convictions, ' said Wilson.
It is unclear what charges they will face.

After being at the house for more than an hour, police say the two men refused to pay the woman for her services. She called or sent a text message to a partner of hers, the 53-year-old man. The gunman took $40 from the man and that man's roommate retreated to a back room and made a panicked call to 911 for help.

Officers confiscated six guns, about 50 cars and about $10, 000 in cash during the 4 a. M. Raid in the first block of East Baltimore, near Woodward and Grand Boulevard, according to a press release from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Police said alcohol and drugs were being sold on the first floor of the establishment. On the second floor, there was a shower area and several rooms used for prostitution, police said.
Approximately 130 people were inside the building. Ten people suspected of operating the blind pig were arrested and are expected to be charged with felonies, police said. Patrons were issued tickets and released.

She was dancing at Venus, but got fired for being messed up. I had several experiences with her, in and OTC. Always had a great time, and she aimed to please. I don't think locking up drug addicts is the solution, otherwise the drug problem in this country wouldn't be such a problem. I believe 99% of the ladies who do this do it because they gave in to their habit and need easy quick money to maintain it. I have to agree with Plumber2, the only reason their doing it to put food on the table is they spent their real income on H instead of food for the kids. The world's oldest profession is adopting a new business model; street-walkers are heading to the information highway.
A first-ever study of the USA Sex industry shows that many prostitutes prefer to make transactions over the Internet now, where rates are higher and they are less vulnerable to arrest or assault.
"There is still street activity, but on the Internet they do not have to operate in the shadows," said Meredith Dank, senior research associate of the Urban Institute, which carried out the survey for the USA Justice Department.
The Internet is also more lucrative, there is a higher price point," said Dank, lead author of the study on the economics of the underground sex industry.
The five-year study focused on eight cities—Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, Miami, Seattle, San Diego, and Washington—and was based on interviews with prostitutes and pimps in all venues including massage parlors, brothels and escort services. It did not include the pornographic movie industry, which is legal.
The Justice Department hopes the study, which focused on the business aspects of the sex economy, will help law enforcement better understand the motivations of its participants, and improve the way victims are treated.
The study found the underground sex economy in the eight cities brought in nearly $1 billion per year, ranging from $300 million in 2007 in Atlanta to $40 million in Denver. Pimps said they took home between $5,000 and $32,833 a week—10 percent of them take credit cards—and advertise on social media and sites like Craigslist.com and Backpage.com to attract customers and new workers.
Dank said prices for sex acts were comparable across the country, with the average going rate of $150 per hour, about the same as for a New York therapist. But that is down from the average $250 before the recession.
"Anecdotally, we heard that the downturn in the economy reduced the price point," Dank said.
Indeed, the study said the Great Recession forced some sex workers to offer discounts, with Atlanta law officers reporting prostitutes offering "Veteran's Day Specials.".

A first-ever study of the USA Sex industry shows that many prostitutes prefer to make transactions over the Internet now, where rates are higher and they are less vulnerable to arrest or assault.
"There is still street activity, but on the Internet they do not have to operate in the shadows," said Meredith Dank, senior research associate of the Urban Institute, which carried out the survey for the USA Justice Department.
The Internet is also more lucrative, there is a higher price point," said Dank, lead author of the study on the economics of the underground sex industry.
The five-year study focused on eight cities—Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, Miami, Seattle, San Diego, and Washington—and was based on interviews with prostitutes and pimps in all venues including massage parlors, brothels and escort services. It did not include the pornographic movie industry, which is legal.
The Justice Department hopes the study, which focused on the business aspects of the sex economy, will help law enforcement better understand the motivations of its participants, and improve the way victims are treated.
The study found the underground sex economy in the eight cities brought in nearly $1 billion per year, ranging from $300 million in 2007 in Atlanta to $40 million in Denver. Pimps said they took home between $5,000 and $32,833 a week—10 percent of them take credit cards—and advertise on social media and sites like Craigslist.com and Backpage.com to attract customers and new workers.
Dank said prices for sex acts were comparable across the country, with the average going rate of $150 per hour, about the same as for a New York therapist. But that is down from the average $250 before the recession.
"Anecdotally, we heard that the downturn in the economy reduced the price point," Dank said.
Indeed, the study said the Great Recession forced some sex workers to offer discounts, with Atlanta law officers reporting prostitutes offering "Veteran's Day Specials.".

My ex roomie shoplifted a dog sweater from kmart in Madison Heights. 500 in fines, 500 court cost, 2 years of drug testing / probation and reporting 2 times a week for drops (seriously, for shoplifting a dog sweater).
