Since there seems to be some weird things going on, I figured now would be a good time to throw this out there and ask for an opinion.

Yes, these things could happen. Frankly, I think the risk was greater on both counts -- LE and STI -- when I have picked up a SW for a car date, or visited a SP for the first time at a busy apartment complex, who shares her phone with two other SP's, and her place with a dog. If you are serious, go the extra mile and actually switch out the battery vs just hand a new battery over.
