Craigslist has recently placed an interesting read for all.
Its worth the checking out. http://www.craigslist.org/about/erotic.services.html

For those of you who hate to read, here is the quick details:

1. They have been performing "telephone verification on user accounts as a requirement for posting in erotic services" and .

2. "We respond promptly to inquiries and requests for assistance from law enforcement officers..." and finally

3. "We give periodic briefings for law enforcement officers on how to efficiently obtain information from craigslist. "

Bad combo. Be safe folks.

For providers, you should be a bit more clever with your phone set up for posts. LONG LIVE THE TRACPHONE. Also consider using a phone answering service of some kind. And there are many, many kinds, that go from free to a few hundred a month or so. Consider it insurance. A condom for your phone. But do your own research.

For gents...consider the phone you call from to be -potentially- compromised. You could be calling a line that just -may- be monitored. Not saying tapped, but more in the sense of your number is logged on a suspected provider's phone record. (A certain NY hockey player has recently been lumped in with a call girl service).

To all...be careful. Its getting uglier out here.

Stay safe folks.

Interesting.... this is probably because our esteemed attorney general (who likes to seek national attention especially in election years where dems may take the whitehouse) recently slammed craigs list for allowing this 'erotic service' section to remain so open. Details linked below

The current state of the Craiglist in CT has made me even more cautious and even more puzzled. I've noticed that some of our regulars have reduced or all-together stopped posting. I attribute this to current heat by press, LE and AG's Office. I can go on about the later, but we all know that they have better and more beneficial things to spent time and money on to better help the general populace. I'll get back to the main point of this post. I've noticed a lot more post with non local (860, 203, 413 & 401) area codes, what's up with that. Are providers using our of area phones to thwart LE? Is LE casting a net to trap customers? Or are they just spam? I've noticed one provider, using the same name and photos, use three different area codes in the last month. I these uneasy times I'm glad I've found a low mileage PS.

If we're talking Connecticut here (this IS the Connecticut/Craigslist warning forum), I doubt 860 or 203 are "non local" area codes.

Let me clarify for you. Anything BUT 860, 203, 413 & 401 are non-local to hartford. I'm going to get into the NYC codes.

There is no wonder there is such a crackdown. Lets face it the advertising of sex for sale on Craigslist is in your face blatant I dare you to solicit me.

Between the pictures services offered and phone numbers it's easy picking for LEO. It's surprising it's lasted this long IMO. With the current media blitz on sex slave trade and message parlors to Politicians and Politicians husband being snagged in stings every law enforcement agency wants a piece of the action.

Taking also into consideration the lax on Craigslist part to censor photos that you know there are kids from elementary and middle school that have access to a home computer can't wait to go home and rub one out while viewing Craigslist Erotic.

It's a double edge sword. Although I feel there is a market for this activity and LEO should use their resources for far worse crimes home invasion drug dealers and other real scum it's the in your face scenario that dooms it to be addressed.

The answer is there should be a paid subscription or age verification sign in process at the least to help stymie the attention that CL is getting. Although I wouldn't be very happy about giving up a CC number. But I wouldn't mind paying a couple bucks to window shop.

Then there's the whole truth in advertising on these for hire girls but that's another topic in it's self.

DO as you will.

Popluar site's prostitution postings have attorney general all worked up

By DOUGLAS S. MALAN

Craigslist.org offers a dazzling array of products, from new houses to used cars, garden hoes to garden-variety prostitutes.

It's that last one that's become a sticking point for state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal. He recently authored a stern letter regarding the San Francisco-based web site that serves as a global classified ads listing.

"I am astonished and appalled by Craigslist's refusal to recognize the reality of prostitution on its web site — despite advertisements containing graphic photographs and hourly rates, and widespread public reports of prostitutes using the site," Blumenthal stated in his March 27 letter to Craigslist's lawyer, Barry Reingold of Perkins Coie in Washington, D.C.

Blumenthal sent his letter shortly after Jennifer Roy, a 34-year-old Plainville mother, was arrested and charged with prostitution. Plainville police set up a sting based on her Craigslist posting that reportedly mentioned "150 smiles" and "200 hugs," which police said was code language referring to money for services.

Though not as polished as former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer's web portal of choice, the Craigslist postings can be as thinly veiled in their intentions as the women who pose in the photos.

"Donations are appreciated and as follows: 160 half hour full service and 200 for the full hour full service," states one Connecticut listing that also includes more personal information.

A company profile on the Perkins Coie web site calls Craigslist "irreverent spicy, humorous, and indispensably practical" when it comes to searching for jobs, real estate, cars and most anything else. Most, but not all, of the postings are free.

"Factually, telephone company yellow pages, weekly newspapers and other offline and online media in the state of Connecticut regularly feature erotic service ads, and actually make a profitable business out of them. In this country, that's legal," said Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster. "Unlike these media of course, Craigslist does not derive any revenue from such ads."

Unlawful Content

There's no denying that the site is used for illegal activities, despite language in its terms of use that prohibits "unlawful" content. The site also forbids the posting of pornographic images.

Between late February and late March, at least 55 people across the country were arrested in connection with prostitution rings that were discovered through Craigslist postings listed under the "erotic services" section. Reported cases came from six states and Canada.

The web site says it receives 30 million user posts per month, and that most posts are made free of charge. Users can flag inappropriate messages that they believe violate the site's terms of use.

"If a post receives enough negative flags it will automatically be removed (only one flag per person per post is counted)," language on Craigslist.org states. "Millions of postings are removed through community flagging each month, and of these we consistently find that 98 to 99 percent are in violation" of guidelines.

Blumenthal challenged that notion in his letter, stating that Craigslist's solutions are "woefully and obviously inadequate." He declared that his office "will weigh all options, including possible legal action, if the site fails to curb content clearly prohibited by its rules."

New Britain First Amendment lawyer Daniel Silver said Blumenthal has no grounds to prosecute Craigslist because the posted messages are protected speech.

"Our attorney general, with all due respect, is on very shaky ground when attempting to censor speech on the Internet," he said. "As our courts have said, the whole point of the Internet is to open up speech. Regulation becomes difficult, if not impossible."

Decency Act

Courts throughout the country have upheld Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996, which provides immunity from liability to internet service providers (ISP) that publish information provided by others.

In part, the section states, "No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider."

Courts upholding Section 230 have done so using numerous legal theories and in a variety of factual contexts, including posting of defamatory, private and false information and pornographic content. Successful defendants in recent cases include America On Line (AOL), ******* and e-Bay.

"I don't see how [Blumenthal] would have grounds" for legal action, Silver said.

Craigslist spokeswoman Susan Best told the Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer last month that her company actually facilitates police department sting operations by allowing the "erotic services" postings to exist. Such a scenario played out in North Carolina where a Wisconsin woman was arrested and accused of maintaining a motel room for prostitution, which police discovered through Craigslist.

Additionally, the Craigslist's site includes a "subpoenas and search warrants" link for law enforcement authorities that leads to a page of contact information for official requests for release of records.

Best added that even if the web site could ban erotic services ads altogether, people who post them "would just start putting them on offshore web sites, out of U.S. control altogether, making it more difficult for law enforcement officials to detect and prosecute criminals using the site.

Bubba is not a moron. The original post was not well written. It stated: "I've noticed a lot more post with non local (860, 203, 413 & 401) area codes, what's up with that."

Anyone NOT familiar with our local area codes would assume that the numbers in the parentheses were the non-local ones that the author was referring to. But having local knowledge should not be necessary in order to understand what an author's meaning.

So it was not a case of bad reading by Bubba, but of unclear writing by Jpeaz.

I read the post and understood none of it. I guess that's why I've never used CL.

I feel somewhat vindicated as the author felt he had to clarify his post.

Bubba, you are a moron.

So, Mr. Mensa Man - if 860 and 203 are not local Connecticut area codes, just where are they? If I am a "moron" and I'm correct, and you are incorrect, what adjective would one use to describe you?

Jpeaz, thanks for the clarification and being up-front and gentlemanly about it.

I saw another CL bust in Manchester yesterday by undercover LE - they answered a woman's CL ad and the UC met her at a local motel, made the deal and then she was arrested, according to the Courant article, "a few minutes later" - just wonder what happened during those "few minutes"? Maybe a complimentary BBBJ and she was lousy at it?

It appeared in the Courant today. Since you can't read you probably didn't see it, you only watch videos and look at pictures.

Heard they dropped the charges out of sympathy this afternoon after she told the authorities that one of her clients was some guy named "Wolfman Jerk", and that he was unable to perform. They figured she had already suffered enough.

Woman Arrested In Undercover Sting

POSTED: 6:35 pm EDT April 8, 2008

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- A Connecticut woman is accused of posting ads advertising sexual services online.

Manchester police said Crystal Possardt, 25, posted several ads on Craigslist.org in which she offered sex in exchange for money.

"People selling sex should not be on Craigslist, which is a reputable and highly regarded place," said Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.

Manchester detectives arrested the woman after an undercover sting operation.

Although officers charged Possardt with prostitution, Blumenthal said he wants Craigslist to do a better job at cracking down on people who use the site for illegal purposes.

He recently sent the company a letter requesting that it begin screening and removing all of the ads for prostitution.

"We think it has an obligation legally and morally to remove these ads because they promote an illegal activity," Blumenthal said.

Craigslist told Blumenthal that it is aware of the problem and that it is willing to cooperate.

Blumenthal said the company denied that it is its legal responsibility to remove the postings.

Toady...thank you so much for that post. Excellent reading. I was just about to mention a few of those things, but that article covered it quite well and gave some wonderful insight.

As stated before, its clear the AG is way willing to go out of bounds for personal political gain. I'm glad there are folks in the media biz who are willing to speak the truth on this, but where is their temerity? Blumenthal and Spitzer have long been very close friends, and have worked many long weekends especially in DC and NJ (All VIP players have NJ Area Codes, right? LOL! Emperess Club is among the latest!). Blumenthal and Spitzer worked many cases concerning the environment, guns, and...insurance.

Forgive me for digressing, but I feel I must. Like Spitzer, Blumenthal has shown great temerity for his own causes in the name of "free press", err, wait...I mean people. I mean, hell, the AG is supposed to be representing the Gov and the state of ct in legal matters. What vested interest does the state have in limiting free speech on Craigslist? Yet, Blumenthal is ready and willing to waste tax payer dollars against CL until they improve their filtering process? Over just 20 complaints, Blumenthal launched a tirade against Best Buy, right?

May be if we complain to the Blumenthal about how many bait and switches we recieve! Now THAT should be a crime the state gets involved in.

I bet Client Number 9, knows all about bait and switch. But does his mentor know all about bait and switch?

Hell...is probably still mad that all he continues to receive are the worst of Lieberman's sloppy seconds. Even the old owl Dodd won't leave his DC nest long enough.

http://www.topix.net/content/trb/2008/03/blumenthal-wonders-whether-he-really-knew-ex-colleague

I did enjoy Blumenthal's response re: Spitzer. Amazing how you can work so long and so closely with some one for so many years, yet...never socialize. Yeah, OK...sure. :) You never knew the guy. Wink wink.

Manchester (WTNH) -- Police round up several women suspected of being prostitutes through Craigslist.

If you need a room mate, want to buy a car or are looking for a carpenter -- Craigslist has it all. And now, sex is also for sale on this site.

"Basically you can go in there almost any day and see different postings for this different behavior," Lieutenant Chris Davis, of Manchester, said. "And, this isn't the first time we have done it."

Manchester detectives say it's like want adds for prostitutes, some even list their rates right on the web site under erotic services. They go for $160 an hour, $100 for a half hour and $60 for a quickie says one add.

News Channel 8 decided to call a woman who lists her picture but not her rates to verify what she is selling.

Wilson: "It's $225 for the hour. Wow, what does that entail?"

She says it's all inclusive. The detectives in Manchester say that is pretty much how it works. In all, they've arrested five women in a prostitution sting -- all advertise their services on Craigslist.

Other police departments, from New Haven to Waterbury, are also monitoring computer chat rooms. In Waterbury, they used another site to help break up a ring in massage parlors and arrested about a dozen women for prostitution.

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has been investigating and negotiating with Craigslist to get them to put in some safe guards. But, people who use the popular web site are surprised to find prostitutes out in the open.

Wilson: "What kind of things have you seen online?"
Matthew Gooding, of Wallingford: "People looking to connect, to hook up, some of the ads are pretty out there."

"If you have people advertising prostitution online, what is next?" Natia Ortega, of Middletown, asked.

Police already know what is next. And that is why they are working these under cover stings.

"Drugs, alcohol and violence follow prostitution activities and we want to stop that from coming into our community," Lieutenant Davis said.

Sounds like the girls did not have to even discuss sex. The cops were just going to arrest them no matter what.

Reputable, and Highly Reguarded? Craigslist? Granted I DID find some deals for some items, but otherwise, especially after the news hit about the mother advertising her daughter's sexual services, it's become flooded with spam, and rip-off artists of all forms.

Just an fyi, I noticed that a provider who posts alot on CL maybe the name is "Carmen" (2 piece bathing suit, black jacket), she shows a distant shot, cant see upper face, just posted on CV, with the same pic, and also attached a pic of another provider, with the other providers name still attached "Mia Sparks". Maybe she "borrowed" the picture because they have similar bodies, maybe something else.

I also noticed the provider that Acisucks posted about, still shows up on CL. Cant see the eye, but she kinda looks like Salma Hayek.

There's also been some rip-off alerts on CV, could be a ripoff, could be another provider hating on another provider.

Its like rtrying to separate the pepper from the fly shit sometimes.

We all know 99 percent of the casual encounters are scams. Sometimes I think a few of the strictly platonic might be legit. So I saw this and thought I might reply ..but .. I did a search on the title.. and what do you know:

First add from woman:

Looking for a Married email buddy? - w4m - 40 (Ct)
"I'm a young married woman, in great shape, smart and funny looking for the same in a married man. No expectations, lets just see where our emails go. I dont want a one night stand. It would be nice to have someone exciting to talk with as friends, and distract us both from our boring loveless marriage. Pictures exchanged after a few emails. Thanks for reading!"

The I find this one too:

It could actually be more than 99%. If you have the patients to wade throught he BS you'll find a gem now and again in the Platonic section either because the poster has no idea what platonic means (usually the case) or you find some lonely heart who wants to chat. I've been communicationg with one now for a month or so and we'll be getting together soon for some fun and games. The "pen pals" start off slow but given time it all progresses to one place.
