Charles pulled a gun and one of the room's occupants, a 26-year-old St. Paul, Minn., man, also pulled a weapon. Charles and the man traded fire, police said, and both were hit.
Police said they arrived at the hotel at about 1:21 a.m.
Both Charles and the other man were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, police said. The Minnesota man's injuries did not look life-threatening, police said.
Charles, of the 200 block of Waldo Street in Rockford, died just after 7 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Branch had been arrested last Thursday as part of a sting in Schaumburg, police said, and charged with prostitution.
Police said they believe some of the two groups of people knew each other. One of the other four occupants of the hotel room, a 27-year-old Pearl River, La., woman, had an outstanding warrant for bond forfeiture on another Schaumburg prostitution arrest last fall, police said. No further details were available Tuesday night.
Branch is expected to appear in bond court in Rolling Meadows tomorrow at 9 a.m
