CHAPTER ONE

It won't matter that you'll never do it again, and it won't matter when you start crying, begging, and pleading.
For a fleeting few moments you may be in denial, and even be thinking that somehow you'll be able to talk your way out of it. However, within a matter of minutes or even less, you'll realize that you're not going to walk away from this thing with a warning.
You'll be ordered to place your hands on the back of your head and then you'll feel the cold steel of those handcuffs for the first time. You'll be walked to the car or van that will be taking you in maybe to a separate staging area, or directly to jail.
You probably won't remember everything the police officers say to you but something will stick out in your mind. It might be the part about how you should be ashamed of yourself. As if you needed that piece of advice at that juncture. You might find yourself riding with other men in handcuffs, or by yourself. Some of them will be crying, some will appear to be in a daze, and a few will look bored and resigned. When you get to jail, you'll definitely see that you're not alone. There will be several guys in the holding cell who got caught just like you did.
Depending on what other charges are filed, you might get out within four to six hours. During your time in jail, you'll possibly feel like killing yourself and will be wondering what you're going to tell your wife, your boss, your children, et cetera. You may be already planning on how you can keep it secret. But guess what: you can't. At first you wonder why they took your shoe laces but you figure that out pretty quickly as you look around the room, trying to figure out how you can hang yourself right there in front of everyone in order to avoid the shame, public humiliation, and all the rest. Then you start imagining the look in your wife's tearful eyes when you see her for the first time after your release, and the sting as she slaps your face. As for keeping it secret from her. That will be practically impossible more about that later.
You might stand there for hours, not sitting down. The bologna sandwiches won't look that appealing to you, so you'll probably pass on lunch. God forbid you should have to defecate. If you do, get over your shyness really quick and remember to hover over the stainless steel toilet with no lid and to not actually sit down on it. You may stay quiet, or join in conversation with other arrested "johns" who will be freely sharing their advice and wisdom with you. You'll find them to be be vast storehouses of misinformation on topics ranging from entrapment to what to tell your wife so she won't find out. There will be at least one guy in there talking about how how knew it was a set-up all along. Yeah. Right. I encourage you to take their "wisdom" with a grain of salt.
Everything you experience from the point of arrest to when you're released is designed to shock, shame, scare, and ultimately deter you from ever thinking about "doing it" again. The method by which police "stings" are carried out is calculated and well-planned for the physical safety of the law enforcement officials, informants and cooperating agents, and also your own physical safety, believe it or not. Also, police "sting operations" are designed to do more than sting they're designed to inflict enough psychological and emotional pain to serve as a deterrent. Unfortunately it may not work. But maybe it will. In the next chapter, we'll cover what happens next, and what you will have to look forward to for the next several months. And then for the next five years. Stay tuned.

CHAPTER TWO
One to six hours later, after posting bond, you'll be released. You may have already made your phone call to your boss, your wife, or best friend. Or maybe even an attorney, or a bondsman. You're out now, and it's time to go get your car, which may still be in the parking lot where you left it but probably not. It's most likely been impounded. Someone at the jail will be happy to give you the phone numbers to call to locate your vehicle. Go get it quickly because time is money, as they say. You need a ride, and if you call your wife believe me, the conversation won't be very pleasant during the ride to the impound yard. It will cost you quite a bit to get your vehicle out, depending on how long you were inside.
If the vehicle is registered to your wife or employer. Guess what? They have to get it out, or go through a lot of paper mumbo-jumbo to allow the vehicle to be released in your name. Of course, if the vehicle is registered in your wife's name, SHE will have to come to the impound yard to get it. Were you driving a company vehicle? Your employer will have to provide an affidavit verifying that you are legally authorized to have the vehicle released to you.
Now it's time to get more acquainted with the criminal justice system, the county health system, and at least two other organizations: a treatment or diversionary counseling program such as Tampa Crossroads or Way Out of the Box, which operate "john" diversion schools, and the Salvation Army (or another organization), which will supervise your probation over the next six months. Your attorney will be happy to correctly inform you that many of your pre-conceived notions regarding entrapment and the criminal statutes on prostitution were mistaken. He may even comment on possible procedural infractions committed by the police, if any. Ultimately, though, he'll probably advise you to allow him to negotiate with the State's Attorney's office to allow you to enter into a pre-sentencing diversionary program. Providing you qualify. You may or may not. If you have prior similar charges, there's a good chance you won't qualify, and will be facing a decision as to whether or not to beat a conviction via criminal trial in order to avoid jail or formal probation time, and a criminal conviction on your record.
If accepted into the diversionary program, you'll be ordered to undergo a physical examination and health-risk lecture at the county health department's STD Clinic. You'll have to submit to various blood, urine, and swab tests, as well as a visual examination of your genitals to determine you don't show signs, symptoms, or laboratory results confirming HIV/AIDS, or any other sexually-transmitted diseases. You'll have to pay for the exam. You'll also have to go see a diversionary criminal justice counselor/probation officer at the Salvation Army or another similar program, and will incur costs for that as well. Depending on your county, you will probably have to check in with them several times over the next three to six months.
In addition, you'll probably be ordered to attend twelve or more weekly group or individual counseling sessions at a "john" diversionary counseling program, where you'll experience a combination of psycho-therapeutic and psycho-educational modalities designed to better inform you of the nature, risks, and damaging elements of the prostitution industry, as well as to inform you of various services designed to assist you in dealing with any clinical issues relevant to you.
The counseling sessions, like the physical examination, are designed to help you, and to assist in the deterrence-driven rehabilitative and corrective process, as well as to provide you with correct, factual information which will hopefully save your life, your family, your career, and your legal status. Those services, by the way, are not designed to be shame-based, unlike the original arrest process. If all goes well, and if you successfully complete all requirements of the prescribed program, you will hopefully be granted a conditional dismissal of the charges. If you had prior similar charges, or don't successfully complete the program within the time allowed, all bets may be off, and a criminal conviction will probably be forthcoming. If you successfully complete the program, but re-offend any time within the next several years, your original charges may be re-activated, and you may suffer one or more criminal convictions, which will remain a permanent part of your record. Then you'll go back to jail but not for a few hours this time.
Regarding that record, rest assured your information will be publicly available for the next five (or more) years from the date of arrest via the Sheriff Department's website (including the specific crime(s) for which you were charged. After that period of time, the information can still be retrieved from public records at the Clerk of Court's office. Oh, and as for keeping it secret from your wife or family, or even your postal letter carrier after the point of arrest, you'll be glad you came clean and was honest with your spouse when the voluminous amount of unsolicited mail starts arriving from dozens of attorneys in the area announcing their legal services for persons charged with crimes associated with prostitution. Every attorney for miles around who routinely represents misdemeanants will be dropping you a flier or letter in the mail.
Even if your record is expunged, your fingerprints will in most circumstances remain a part of the state investigatory agency's permanent data base, and will be flagged for several reasons. For example, in the State of Florida (and many other states), fingerprinting is required for all persons applying to be public school teachers. In spite of the fact that charges were conditionally dismissed due to your participation in the diversionary program, and in spite of the fact that you were not convicted of a crime you will probably never be able to be employed as a school teacher in the State of Florida (or as previously mentioned, in many other states).
Stay tuned for Chapter Three, where we'll make full circle and discuss those feelings that got you into trouble to begin with.

So, let's go back to talking about those feelings we were talking about at the beginning of Chapter One. You remember how you felt bored, lonely, sad, self-pitying, or powerless, ashamed, angry, self-blaming. And/or just have plain ol' "low self esteem. " Or, maybe you were just horny hot to trot and wanted to let off a little sexual steam. Then you became numb during your ritualized search for just the right girl, followed by the excitement, intensity, anticipation, the sheer thrill, and all those other powerful feelings that made the bad feelings go away. Then, you felt the shock and awe, the denial, and the feelings of self-condemnation, despair, hopelessness, and all the other horrible feelings associated with the arrest, and the aftermath consequences, such as the effects on your wife, your family, your job, et cetera.
It's possible that those feelings were associated the stages of the Sexual Addiction Cycle: Inner Pain; Tunnel Vision; Playgrounds, Playmates, and Playthings; Bottom-line; and the "Oh, My God! I Swear! " phases. Somewhere along the line you will have reached the Decision Point phase, where you'll make a decision whether or not to exit or re-enter the destructive cycle, or die right then and there. You will have discovered that you're either in an exiting mode which allows for a cessation of that destructive cycle, and are upwardly spiraling toward recovery, health, serenity, and freedom. Or, you may find that as the cycle continues, and becomes a downward spiral.
Next time around, the story will really have an unhappy ending.
