Carroll man arrested on prostitution charge Dated:* May 25, 2006 --* by Keith Rydberg* *

Carroll, Iowa -- *A Carroll man was arrested earlier this week on a prostitution charge after allegedly harassing a woman for months offering to pay her for sex.

Daniel Harold Salem, 55, of Carroll, was arrested on suspicion of prostitution, an aggravated misdemeanor, May 23 in the 500 block of Sixth Street in Carroll. Released on his own recognizance, a preliminary hearing in the case was set for 9 a.m. June 13. The maximum penalty for an aggravated misdemeanor is two years’ imprisonment and a $5,000 fine.

Sgt. Kevin Fleecs of the Carroll Police Department said Salem’s arrest was the result of a three-month investigation that started when the woman Salem was calling contacted police. The woman reported she had been receiving the calls since January and had never met Salem before he called her.

Fleecs said part of the difficulty in the investigation was that Salem always used a cellular phone to make the calls. As a result, investigators could trace the phone number back to the cellular phone but could not definitely determine who was making the call. However, as the investigation continued, Fleecs said Salem’s name began to be connected to each incident.

“His name kept coming up as we continued our investigation and we started going forward from there,” Fleecs said.

More charges may follow as investigators are attempting to determine whether Salem was involved in other incidents of telephone prostitution in the area. While Fleecs said Salem is suspected of being involved in making similar phone calls, there was only enough information available to seek a warrant on the one incident.

“We know he has been in contact with several women and we have enough information to continue an ongoing investigation,” Fleecs said.

IOWA CITY, IA - A former Johnson County resident who is currently in prison faces ongoing criminal conduct charges for his role in operating a prostitution ring in Linn, Johnson, Iowa and Clayton counties.

Robert A. Sallis, 48, now an inmate of the Clarinda Correctional Facility, is accused of advising how to operate the prostitution ring, which was in operation between fall 2004 and spring 2005. Sallis is also accused of soliciting females to participate in the ring, including at least one minor female, criminal complaints indicate.

Sallis made an initial appearance in Johnson County District Court Thursday and was transported back to the Clarinda facility, where he is serving a five-year sentence following a 2005 willful injury conviction from Iowa County.

Arrests made in prostitution investigation

WATERLOO --- Undercover officers arrested five people in a prostitution sting in downtown Waterloo Wednesday night.

Both male and female officers took part in the operation, which was conducted in response to complaints, said Capt. Bruce Arends.

The arrests were made in the 300 block of Commercial Street and the areas of West First and West Third and Jefferson streets.

Four women offered the undercover officers sex for prices in the $20 range, according to court records.

Arrested for prostitution were Donna L. Stillions, 46, of 310 E. Sixth St.; Christie L. LeTourneau, 32, of 404 Allen St.; Charlotte L. Jefferson, 48, of 701 Locust St.; and Ieisha S. Gilmore, 21, of 1624 Newell St..

Jefferson was also arrested for possession of crack cocaine after police found two glass pipes with crack residue in her coat pocket, police said.

Only one male was taken into custody attempting to buy sex, police said. He was also charged with prostitution.

A sixth person, Tanya H. Coleman, 42, of 302 Commercial St., No. 19, was arrested for possession of crack cocaine during the investigation. She allegedly had a pipe with crack residue, but she wasn't charged with prostitution.

I'm Curious.

I used to stop in there once in a while while traveling and saw a girl there semi-regularly that went by the name of Bobbi. She was very good. Well, to make a long story short, I was back there a couple of weeks ago and no one seemed to have even heard of Bobbi and the pick of the litter was a short fat dumpy chick that was almost old enough to be my grandmother. I have not seen any reports on here about anyone getting lucky in Waterloo. It does seem that the local PD has been looking.

Two arrested on prostitution complaints

Two men were arrested for prostitution after police conducted an undercover investigation on Friday downtown. Omar XXXXX, 24 of Waterloo, was charged with prostitution and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Lee XXXX, 46 of Reinbeck, was also charged with prostitution.

The Waterloo Police Department will continue to conduct similar operations to promote safe and legal activities in the downtown area, according to a news release.

Because of the ongoing investigation, police declined to disclose the exact location of the arrests, except to say they occurred in the downtown area.

From the way the article is writen it is unclear if they have picked up a couple guys out looking for girls or if they have found themselves a pair of gay prostitutes.

The owner of a bar north of Mason City said Wednesday there are plans to change the format of the bar to a gentleman’s club, featuring sexually oriented entertainment —female dancers in various stages of nudity.

Jason Berding, who owns and operates Vibrations,* 20847 Osprey Ave., said his brother, Robert, would lease the building and start a juice bar and allow patrons to bring beer into the establishment. The business would not sell alcohol. It would sell pop and juice.

Robert Berding is requesting a variance from the Cerro Gordo Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustment.
County ordinance restricts operation of a sexually oriented business on property within 1,000 feet of the boundary of a residential district. Jason Berding said his property is zoned properly, but because a residential area is located across Highway 65, a variance is needed. The Zoning Board of Adjustment will take up the request at 4 p.m. on June 12 at the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse.

Jason Berding said people residing in the area have been approached and a majority of them have signed a petition supporting the business, which has been submitted with the application for variance.

Jason Berding said he has owned and operated Vibrations, since October 2005.“The trend in the bar business in Mason City is slow these days,” said Jason Berding. “My brother is leasing the place, trying to make a go of a new business.” Jason Berding said he has been encouraged by patrons and businessmen who travel through the area to try the gentleman’s club. “I was shocked to hear how many people would like to see this kind of business,” he said.

Berding said he would like to open as soon as possible, pending all the appropriate zoning clearances and some remodeling. “It is going to be a classy joint,” said Jason Berding. “We will offer a taxi service and require customers to be 21 years of age.” He said that the operation would differ from other operation that have featured strippers.

Drugs and prostitution have been problems in such businesses in the past, Berding said. “I have zero tolerance for that — if I see any of that I will shut that down.”

Saw the reports of a sting in Waterloo- Waterloo has been less tolerant than say Des Moines in recent years, however thee is still action available if you are not fussy. Opponents of a proposed Mason City juice bar claimed Tuesday that property values would fall and both traffic on a dangerous road and immoral activity would increase if it were allowed to open.

They cheered when the Cerro Gordo County Board of Adjustment unanimously denied a request for a zoning variance that would have allowed the sexually oriented business to operate along U.S. Highway 65 North.

Robert Berding hoped to lease the building housing the bar Vibrations for use as a gentlemans club featuring nude female dancers. The bar is owned and operated by Jason and Connie Berding. Jason is Robert Berdings brother.

A county ordinance forbids operation of a sexually oriented business within 1,000 feet of a residential district, church or playground.

People spoke on both sides of the issue during a hour-long public hearing.

Connie Berding explained that she and her husband, Jason, had entered the bar business as silent partners, investing $50,000. It became theirs when their partner left town, leaving them with the business and debt. When youre in a hole and trying to work your way out its hard, she said. It is not my dream to have a gentlemans club there, she said. It is our next business adventure. She said they hoped to allow Robert Berding an opportunity to be successful in business and avoid more financial losses.

Some neighbors said they didnt have a problem with the proposal.

Tony Mann, who works as a disc jockey at Vibrations, said gentlemens clubs can be operated in a very respectable manner. Mann said he had worked at a similar club in Wisconsin. Youre not going to see anything change, he said. The exterior will remain the same. If you find that theres prostitution, you can shut us down. If you find that there are drugs, you can shut us down. Its not going to happen.

The opposition focused on several issues. John Barron, who lives north of Mason City, said approval of the variance would be spot zoning. He suggested that the juice bar would result in decreased property values. I believe there would be long-range ramifications if this were to be approved, he said.

Kristi Larson said she lived a half-mile from the business on County Road B20. Referring to a Department of Transportation report that indicated the road was among the most dangerous in the state, she said things got quieter and safer after the Outer Edge (which formerly operated in the area) closed.

The Outer Edge, which had a liquor license, operated for several years as a exotic dance club. The bar featured partially clothed dancers. A juice bar does not have a liquor license and permits nude dancing. Shirley Carlson said that once the Outer Edge closed, the neighborhood got quieter. We used to have people running around all the time, she said. They would knock on our door, asking for rides, asking to use the phone. It has been really, really peaceful, Carlson said. Dont tell me that people wont be bringing drugs out there.

Attorney Jim Locher represented DEM Properties L.C. and Douglas Moline, owners of property south of the proposed club. Increased use of the Berding property will likely result in unauthorized parking on DEM property, he said. Locher also talked about property values and said a juice bar could hamper residential development in the area.

Board of Adjustment discussion was brief. To me, it comes down to 1,000 feet, said board member Tennis Gordon. If we start granting variances, there will be more. Board member Charles Norris agreed. We, as a board, do not decide the morality of it, or make business decisions. Norris said there are circumstances when reasonable arguments can be made. But this was not one of them, he said, making the motion to deny.

Berding said he has not yet decided if he will appeal the boards decision. An appeal must be filed in District Court within 30 days.

Iowa City Police made two prostitution-related arrests earlier this month. when they accused a woman of trading sex for drugs.

Barbara S. Wilmot, 37, of 931 1/2 N. Dodge St., was released on her recognizance after appearing in front of a Johnson County District Court judge Thursday, court records show. Police say they found her engaged in a sex act with Todd Marsharn Darnell Brodie, 19, of 411 Dakota Trailwhen executing a search warrant at 1900 Muscatine Ave., on January 30. She admitted providing the sex act in exchange for cocaine, and to providing sex acts to other men in the residence, according to a police complaint.

Police said Brodie admitted to inviting Wilmot to the residence, and that Wilmot admitted to receiving cocaine as payment for the sex act and also admitted to providing sex acts to other men as well.

Police charged both Wilmot and Brodie with prostitution and also charged Wilmot with cocaine possession. Both crimes are aggravated misdemeanors, punishable by a fine ranging from $500 to $5,000 and imprisonment of up to two years.

Wilmot also is accused of possession of a controlled substance. Her next court appearance has been set for Aug. 15.

If you find something on the street in Waterloo, and you usually can, the best bet is to take them to the cinima 16-a dirty movie house on E 4th st. (enterance is in the back) You can rent a private room for couples to view XXX movies for a few bucks and if you want watch a bad XXX movie on a small T. V. (like you would be looking anyway) and have a private time. Safer than parking and less likely to be interupted. Usually you can find some action on 4th St or around the back streets of the strip joint called Flirts. On Jefferson-sometimes in the alley behind Saffires or even elsewhere on Jefferson.

I have stopped in the Mini Cinema downtown a few times. On occasion (probably rare) there are some couples there looking to play. I have only had that experience there once so don't count on it.

There is a relative new club out on Airline Highway that is owned by the same people as the Cinema. The one and only time I was there several months ago there seemed to be a lot of amateur women there - some with dates others in groups of women. I ended up watching the show for a while but the most fun was in the back room where they open up the stage for anyone to dance. From the way I am reading things there are lots of strip clubs just across the river, guess that is where the city fathers want the town's money to go.

A new strip club is about to open in Dubuque, and city leaders are worried about what’s next. Now, they want to make it more difficult for other adult entertainment clubs to start up.

During a special meeting Friday, the city council unanimously put a seven month moratorium on any future adult entertainment businesses.

High-charged emotions filled the city council chambers.

Several people at this meeting say strip clubs and juice bars do not belong in Dubuque.

Colleen Pasnik, of Dubuque, said, "It just encourages men to view women as objects."

But, they are legally allowed to move in and it all comes down to numbers.

Right now, all but five percent of the city is zoned to keep adult entertainment establishments out.

City Manager Mike Van Milligen said, "The U.S. Supreme Court has said cities cannot ban adult entertainment uses. However, we can put restrictions on where they can be."

This area behind Wal-Mart is one of the few spots in the city where strip clubs are allowed.

The city manager says the council worries this area could become an adult entertainment district.

Van Milligen said, “Now that ‘The Office’ is opening, the question is how close can another facility open near there? The current ordinance is 500 feet and we think that's probably not restrictive enough."

Managers at “The Office” were not available for comment about the moratorium.

The city says it will not affect this club's plan to open later this month.

Pasnik said, "Other illegal activity would spring up among those types of businesses, prostitution, drug area things like that."

So for the next seven months, "The Office" will be the only strip club in town, and for some people, that's one too many.

The moratorium prohibits development of adult entertainment until June 1, 2008

IOWA CITY - Betty Thompson, accused in an Eastern Iowa prostitution ring in 2004 and 2005, received a suspended two-year prison sentence Thursday for helping then-boyfriend Robert Sallis run the ring.

Thompson, 36, pleaded guilty and was sentenced on a serious misdemeanor charge of aiding and abetting prostitution at an arraignment in Johnson County District Court.

The prosecutor, Assistant Johnson County Attorney Anne Lahey, recommended the suspended sentence because Thompson has been working full time, helped investigators in the case and has five children at home. "She has some accountability, but she also was a victim," Lahey said.

Thompson, 1605 N. Jones Blvd., North Liberty, helped Sallis, 49, operate the business from a Cosgrove apartment and later from a Williamsburg house, but then told investigators about the enterprise. The investigation eventually involved several Iowa counties, state investigators and United States attorneys.

A jury found Sallis guilty of ongoing criminal conduct in October. He is scheduled to be sentenced today and could spend up to 25 years in prison for the crime.

During Sallis' trial, Thompson and another woman testified that Sallis told them how to operate the business and beat them if they didn't do as he said. He threatened to kill them if they left him, they testified.

Sallis was convicted of willful injury in 2005 for beating Thompson in Iowa County.

"I actually almost lost my life at his hands," Thompson said at her sentencing Thursday. She told Associate District Court Judge Stephen Gerard she understood she was guilty.

"Too bad you weren't thinking more clearly at the time it happened, but it's a fact you've been doing the right thing ever since you got out," Gerard said. He sentenced Thompson to up to two years supervised probation.

Never been to Touch of Mink, I know people generally give it a thumbs down but I'm wondering if its because its just overpriced or the chicks are all fat/ugly or both. An Iowa casino worker says he should not have been fired for demanding that his co-workers provide him with prostitutes because the casino promotes Las Vegas-style gaming.

A 62 year old man from Kalona worked at the Riverside Casino and Gold Resort south of Iowa City until last November. He was fired after he was given a $100 Riverside gift certificate and a free night's stay at the casino hotel in recognition of a year's employment with the company.

He used the gift certificate and free night's stay on the night of Nov. 28.

"I went to Ruthie's, the nice steakhouse within the casino, and I had a cosmopolitan or two and a bottle of wine and a really good dinner," The former emplyee testified at a recent state hearing dealing with his request for unemployment benefits.

He said he went to his hotel room about midnight and called hotel managers for help in figuring out how to order an adult movie. An hour later, he said, he called the managers again "and asked for a hooker."

After the managers refused to help procure a prostitute for him, he then called someone at the adjacent resort and made the same request.

"The advertisement is that it's just like Las Vegas, so I thought I was in Las Vegas," he claimed.

The casino's human resources director, Tim Donovan, testified that hotel workers were then sent to his room to insist that he stop calling for prostitutes. "When the hotel supervisor knocked on the door, "he" answered the door in the nude," Donovan testified. The man was fired the next day.

At the benefits hearing, he testified that his actions had no detrimental effect on the casino. He said he had been given an "excellent" performance review not long before the incident.

"Gamblers have been allowed to continue gambling after they've urinated on the blackjack table standing in full public view," he testified. "I think there's a little dual standard here."

He also blamed the casino restaurant for his state of intoxication.

"They overserved me," he said. "And this casino advertises itself, if you look at any of their commercials, as a Las Vegas-style casino."

On Wednesday he claimed that his requests for a prostitute were actually part of "an off-the-wall surveillance" test of some kind. "I was absolutely plowed," he added.

Administrative Law Judge Terence Nice rejected his claim for benefits.

'The Office' dancer arrested

A 19-year-old employee from The Office strip club, 4292 Dodge Street, was arrested after allegedly soliciting sex for money from two undercover agents early Friday, according to Dubuque police.

The woman from Milwaukee, known at the strip club as "Mowet," was arrested around 4 a.m. at the Holiday Inn, 450 Main St., on a charge of prostitution.

Police say that at about 1:30 a.m. at the club, Mowet agreed to meet an Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent, receive money and engage in sexual acts with him at the hotel.

Mowet has been working at The Office part time for about a month and has been staying with her cousin in Dubuque, according to documents filed at the Dubuque County District Court.

Dubuque City Council agenda includes a couple of items on adult-business establishments

Citizens will have the opportunity to address the Dubuque City Council on several issues Monday night at 6:30, including a zoning ordinance change that would prevent adult-entertainment businesses from operating within 2,500 feet of one another. The current ordinance requires only 500 feet of separation.

Laura Carstens, Dubuque's Planning Services manager, cites several studies showing adult-entertainment establishments clustered too closely adversely

affect neighborhoods. Studies conducted in Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Phoenix and Los Angeles all reached the same conclusion, she said.

"... (C)oncentrations of sexually oriented businesses have significant relationship to higher crime and lower property values," the Minneapolis study reported.

Under current code, there is the possibility that as many as three adult businesses could co-exist near The Office, Dubuque's only strip club, on the city's West Side. The City Council placed a moratorium, which ends June 1, on new adult businesses to study the situation. The only other adult business operating in Dubuque is the Adult Warehouse on Jackson Street.

A separate but related issue not up for public debate Monday is a recommendation to license adult entertainment establishments, their performers and employees. Two provisions of the ordinance would require performers and employees to obtain identification forms from the Dubuque Police Department, at a cost to the ID card holders.

"Recent events, including criminal charges, confirm the beginnings of negative secondary effects related to the adult entertainment establishment in Dubuque," City Manager Michael Van Milligen wrote in his recommendation to the City Council. "These regulations attempt to address, and hopefully limit, the secondary effects observed in studies from other communities and in Dubuque."

A woman who worked at The Office was arrested and charged with prostitution in early March after allegedly soliciting sex for money from two undercover agents. An official from the club told this reporter the accused was an "independent contractor."

Dubuque tavern owners have mixed reactions to new ordinance

Is it a case of a heavy-handed city government throwing its weight at a business it doesn't approve of? Or is the city simply exerting control over a category of businesses that leaders fear could become a growing problem if left unchecked?

On any level, the city of Dubuque's new licensing ordinance for adult entertainment enterprises sends a clear message to current and would-be proprietors that doing business here won't be easy.

Although the regulations, which go into effect in about two months, appear targeted at The Office Gentleman's Club on Dubuque's West End, they apply to all adult entertainment enterprises. The Office opened in November as a juice bar, in which customers could bring their own alcohol. Rather than charge an entry fee, customers pay to park. The club touted its fully nude dancers in a city where the nearest competition comes from East Dubuque, Ill., and La Motte, Iowa.

Under the new ordinance, alcohol and nudity won't be allowed. All employees and performers are required to register for a license at the Dubuque Police Department, and dancers cannot accept tips. These restrictions and many others in the new ordinance will likely hamper adult businesses. The ordinance comes shortly after a Milwaukee woman who was performing at The Office was charged with soliciting prostitution by undercover officers at a downtown hotel.

How do these restrictions resonate with tavern owners in Dubuque? Could their establishments be next if something occurs that could be connected to their businesses?

"I don't feel threatened by it at all," said Bob Leytem, of the Dog House. "They have control over the bars in town with liquor licenses and now they've got some control over (The Office). Dubuque has always been against those kinds of places. There's more than one way to skin a rabbit, I guess."

The City Council approves all liquor licenses on the recommendation of the chief of police, who lists the number of complaint calls his officers have responded to since the previous license was issued.

If a bar has frequent incidents, the chief often recommends a six-month license rather than the customary one-year period. During that time, police work with the bar owners on ways to mitigate problems.

Although most people acknowledge the city's right to regulate sex-related businesses, some thought the city's handling of the matter could have been more forthright.

The Office co-owners, Paula and Jim Bodish, say they were not aware that the licensing regulations were on the City Council's agenda. Paula Bodish said she found out about it from customers who called her shortly after the council passed the ordinance, 7-0, on March 17.

"My reaction is I think they overstepped their bounds," said Bill Skinner, of Neighbors Tap. "It doesn't seem right to put all this stuff on them after the fact. They should have had this in effect ahead of time."

The city, however, apparently felt its former regulations weren't strong enough. City staff spent months researching the new ordinance and studied how other cities have dealt with the issue.

Although Skinner doesn't think that the city is sending a message to other businesses, Brett Arensdorf, of the Instant Replay on Central Avenue, isn't so sure.

"I thought it was rather Stalinst, myself," Arensdorf said. "It does make you a little nervous. Are they just coming down on one place or are they picking and choosing places to pick on?"

The owners of Dubuque's only strip club have filed a law suit against the city. They claim the city's ordinance on the sex entertainment businesses is unconstitutional.

The Dubuque city council voted to adopt the ordinance back on March 17. It bans alcohol on the premises and requires staffers and performers to get licenses from the city.

The ordinance also regulates behavior within the establishments. Customers aren't allowed to tip. There must also be a buffer zone between the performers and the customers.

The Office opened last November. The city council set a 60-day grace period for the club to comply. That ends on May 16th. The lawsuit initially seeks a temporary injunction until a hearing is held.

The plaintiffs claim they will have no choice but to close if the ordinance is enforced

Two Dubuque residents could face jail time for an alleged $26 sexual transaction.

67 year old Robert was arrested on a charge of prostitution at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, police said. 21 year old Felicia turned herself in to police Monday morning on a warrant for extortion.

The two met sometime in May in downtown Dubuque, according to court documents. While in his office on Main Street, they engaged in sexual acts in exchange for $26, according to a police report.

Later, Felicia called Robert and said that she was a minor and would tell police that he raped her, Robert told police. Felicia admitted to police that she told him she'd report him to police if he didn't pay her $100, documents state. Robert gave her $98 in cash.

Robert faces a maximum penalty of two years in prison, and Felicia faces a felony charge and up to five years in prison, the County Attorney's Office said.

A Louisiana woman was arrested and charged with prostitution on Saturday night (July 5) after police responded to a disturbance was reported at the Motel 6 at 810 First Ave. in Coralville.

41 year old Dinora of Kenner, La., was charged with prostitution, an aggravated misdemeanor. She was taken to the Johnson County Jail and is held on a $5,000 cash bond. She faces up to two years in prison.

Dinora allegedly knocked on the door of the unidentified man's hotel room around 12:30 a.m. Saturday at the Motel 6, and offered to perform a sex act for $40. When the man refused, Dinora allegedly said, "What are you, gay?" In the midst of an altercation, Wilson then struck the man in the face. Dinora appeared intoxicated, according to police reports.

Be careful out there. 34 year old John of Dubuque definitely did not get lucky. He was arrested on charges of no proof of insurance and prostitution around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday on the 1000 block of Jackson Street. he was not the victim of a sting, police arrested him after they received a complaint that he was soliciting sex acts. No word on wether or not there were any real SWs to be picked up.

Four people were arrested Thursday following an undercover prostitution sting in Waterloo.

Waterloo Police Officers conducted the investigation into suspected prostitution activity in the downtown west-side area of Waterloo. The investigation involved both male and female undercover officers.

Two Waterloo women were arrested. 48 year old margaret and 28 year old Bridgette. In addition two men were also arrested. 38 year old Gerald from Waterloo and 57 year odl Archille from Minnesota.

An undercover investigation by the Denison Police Department and the Crawford County Sheriff's Office led to the filing of prostitution charges against a dancer from Big Earl's Key Club located at 33 S. Main St. in Denison.

21 year old Vejnethia of Milwaukee was arrested and charged with indecent exposure, a serious misdemeanor and prostitution, an aggravated misdemeanor.

On Wednesday evening, undercover police entered the bar. Reports stated that while working as a dancer, Vejnethia exposed her genital area and accepted cash in exchange for agreeing to perform a sexual act.

Denison Police Chief Rod Bradley said the arrest is part of an on-going investigation into allegations of illegal activity at Big Earl's.

Vejnethia is being held at the Crawford County Jail on a $2,000 bail. Agents of the Region 4 Fusion Center and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office assisted the police department and sheriff's office with the investigation.

Big Earl's is the same club where two Nebraska teens were allegedly forced into prostitution last year. Their recruiters are currently facing charges of human trafficking.

An Iowa City man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly offered a woman money for sex.

54 year old Thomas was charged with prostitution after he allegedly approached a woman outside the Cigarette Outlet, 1901 Broadway St. , and offered to pay her for sex. She refused and, alarmed by his offer, called police.

Thomas has posted bond and has been released from the Johnson County Jail. His phone number was unlisted, and he was unavailable for comment.

Prostitution is considered an aggravated misdemeanor and is punishable by up to two years in prison.

A Davenport man was arrested Friday for working as a pimp with a female prostitute in Coralville on Feb. 8.

47 year old Samuel faces the charge of pimping, a class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

According to a Johnson County Sheriff complaint, an undercover officer contacted a subject who placed an advertisement on the Internet, something police oficers all over the country have found to be almost as easy as shooting fish in a barrel.

Samuel brought a female to the agreed upon location where she planned on engaging in a sexual act in exchange for money, according to the complaint.

The woman said Samuel was her "driver" and said Samuel worked for the same person that she did, according to the complaint.

The woman said that after the transaction, she was to give all of the money she earned to Samuel, and he would decide how much was returned to her, according to the complaint.

Samuel admitted he was hired to drive the woman to the hotel and provide "protection" for her if needed in exchange for money, according to the complaint.

Samuel was released from the Johnson County Jail on Saturday morning, he does not have a listed phone number.

Nothing was mentioned in the story about what happened to the alleged prostitute nor if any action has been taken against their employer.

Iowa City Police have obtained arrest warrants for three women wanted as part of a prostitution ring.

According to a police news release, several agencies are involved in a months-long probe into an online prostitution operation that used Craigslist to solicit Iowa City-area clients.

Police have already arrested 47-year-old Samuel of Davenport and charged him with pimping. They have arrest warrants out for 21-year-old Heather of Rock Island, Ill., 20-year-old Kathleen of Springfield, Ill., and 26-year-old Lisa, also of Springfield. All are wanted for prostitution, which is an aggravated misdemeanor. Kathleen is also wanted for pimping and marijuana possession.

Police say that an undercover officer responded to an online solicitation. A meeting was arranged at an area hotel. On Feb. 8, Heather arrived at the hotel and explained what specific sexual acts she would perform for money. Heather had been driven to the hotel by Samuel. Heather was to give Samuel any money she earned. Samuel, in turn, would determine what amount Heather would be allowed to keep. Samuel admitted he was to provide transportation and “protection” for Heather.

Kathleen, also known as “Megan,” along with Lisa, advertised “encounters” on Craigslist. An undercover officer posing as a customer contacted Kathleen and arranged to meet with the two of them at an area hotel. Kathleen and Lisa arrived together at the hotel on Feb. 11. The undercover officer and the women discussed specific sexual acts the women would perform for money. Additionally, a notebook was found in Kathleen's car that Kathleen admitted was hers. The notebook contained what appeared to be the names of other clients and scheduled appointments with other women. Not hte type of records I suspect their cleints would like them to keep. These other women were also discovered to be listing their services on Craigslist. In each case, the contact phone number listed was Kathleen's phone number. Kathleen was also found to be in possession of marijuana.

Police say the investigation is on-going and additional charges are likely. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office, the Iowa City Police Department, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, University of Iowa Police, the Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Coralville Police Department are all taking part in the investigation.

Lisa age 26, was arrested Thursday night on the charge of prostitution, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to up to two years in prison. She remained in the Johnson County Jail on Friday on a $5, 000 cash-only bond.

Lisa and another Springfield woman, Kathleen, aka "Megan, " age 20, advertised "encounters" on Craigslist, according to the arrest complaint. One of the three women involved in an online prostitution ring was arrested Sunday night.

Kathleen XXXXXXX age 20, of Springfield, Ill., was arrested for pimping, prostitution and drug possession at 5:53 p.m. Sunday and taken to the Johnson County Jail, according to jail officials.

Three others have also been charged for their involvement in the online sex solicitations, one of whom was arrested last month.

According to Iowa City Police reports, an undercover police officer on Feb. 8 contacted and arranged to meet Heather age 21, of Rock Island, Ill., at an area hotel after being sexually solicited online. At the hotel, a police report shows, Heather explained to the officer the sexual acts she would perform for money.

Heather was driven to the hotel by Samuel age 47, of Davenport, who was to receive the money Heather earned. Scott would later determine how much of those profits she deserved, police investigation found. Scott told police he provided transportation and "protection" for Heather.

In a related incident on Feb. 11, a Craig's List Internet post by Kathleen and Lisa age 26, also of Springfield, Ill., advertised "encounters."

Upon meeting at a local hotel, Kathleen and Lisa told an undercover officer which sex acts they would exchange for "a gift," police said.

Kathleen told police the two women would split the money after completing the sex act, a report showed.

A notebook discovered in Kathleen's car during the investigation listed names police believed to be clients. Also in the notebook was a schedule of appointments with other women. These women also listed their services on Craig's List, and Kathleen's was listed as the contact.

Scott was arrested in late April for pimping and Kathleen remains in custody for pimping, prostitution and possession of marijuana, which was found among her cigarettes in her vehicle Feb. 11 during an investigation. Heather and Nolker remain at large with warrants for their arrest.

Pimping is a Class D felony punishable by a maximum five-year prison sentence and a fine of as much as $7,500. Prostitution is an aggravated misdemeanor, which carries a prison term of as much as two years and a fine of up to $5,000. Possession of marijuana, a serious misdemeanor, is punishable by up to a year in jail and a maximum $1,500 fine.

A woman who decided she wanted to engage in the world's oldest profession ended up being Marshalltown's first arrest for prostitution in more than a decade when she decided to advertise her services in an elevator at a local apartment building.

Arrested was 18 year old Samantha Jo of Marshalltown.

"It's very bold - very unusual," said Acting Assistant Police Chief Brian Batterson. "In other cities, you hear about it in the personal ads and on Craigslist, but we just don't see much of that here."

Police were alerted to a handwritten message in an elevator at the Tallcorn Towers on West Main Street. The message gave the phone number of an individual who was willing to trade sex for money.

Officers with the Marshalltown Police Department, along with undercover agents from the Mid Iowa Drug Task Force, conducted a prostitution sting operation.

"She solicited an undercover officer and was arrested," Batterson said.

"Why this lady decided to be this bold is anyone's guess," Batterson added.

Samantha was taken into custody and faces an aggravated misdemeanor charge, which carries a maximum penalty of up to two years in prison.

Take Samantha for example. When she needed money, Marshalltown police allege Samantha, 18, went into the stairwell of Tallcorn Towers and scrawled a message on the emergency exit doors on each of the apartment building's eight floors:

The building's owner, B.O. Bryngelson, was curious about the offer. So he called the phone number attached to the less-than-subtle message.

This was their conversation, according to Bryngelson, 78:

Her: "Are you a cop?"

Him: "No."

Him: "Is that the discount price?"

Her: "Yeah."

Him: "At that price, I'll have to think it over."

Bryngelson said he called Marshalltown police. Authorities arrested Samantha on a prostitution charge on May 8, a police department press release said.

"It was just unbelievable," Bryngelson said. "That was so stupid. It was laughable."

Samantha already faced a felony drug charge from March, according to online court records. And she received a deferred judgment for a felony theft charge in April. Samantha is being held at the Marshall County Jail.

"She isn't too bad of a gal," Bryngelson said of Samantha. "But if anything like that shows up, we get right on it because we don't want it going on in the building."

The most reliable place I've found for SW lately is the Park Towers building on the corner of Park and Sycamore. Most afternoons and nights I see 2-3 WSW in front of the building or near by. They aren't great looking, but they can be cheap ($20-40 FS) and usually you can go up to their room or a friends to do the deed. Some of them may be a little skittish the first time if they don't know you so play it cool.

If you go down there please, for all our sakes, BE DISCREET. The cops seem to be leaving them alone right now but that could change really fast if people start complaining.

Other areas:

Last summer there were often SW on West 2nd between Commercial and Jefferson in the evening and at night. In the past I've also seen girls on Commercial between 1st and 11th and in other areas downtown both west and east sides in. Action in Waterloo overall is very spotty and good looking girls are rare. If you find one you like I would highly recommend you try to get a phone number.

Strip Clubs:

There are three strip clubs in town and I've gotten the feeling from some of the girls that after hour get togethers might be possible. I've never inquired myself because it would probably be out of my price range. If you do try it be subtle and feel it out, obviously if you ask the wrong girl you could end up getting thrown out.

Iowa city Police Stay Busy

Two people were arrested after police said a woman offered sexual favors to an undercover officer in exchange for money.

Ronald aged , 53, of Iowa City., is facing pimping charges after he worked with Tammy aged 39, to solicit sexual offers in exchange for cash. Tammy, who shares an address with Ronald is facing a prostitution charge on top of a second-degree burglary charge stemming from a July 22 incident.

Police said on Saturday, Tammy arranged a meeting with an undercover officer to discuss having sex for $50. No inforamtion was divulged on what prompted the call. Tammy called Roger and the three met at Crandic Park in Iowa City. Roger told the officer that Tammy would perform oral sex on the officer for the $50 which was to be paid to Roger and gave the two a key to his residence, authorities said. When Roger was paid, he was arrested along with Tammy, police complaints show.

Tammy also faces a second-degree burglary charge in connection with an incident on July 22. Police said Tammy asked two men to break into a Kirkwood ave residence and take $50 owed to her. The person in the residence was punched and pepper sprayed by the two men.

Both Roger and Tammy are being held in the Johnson County Jail.

Pimping is a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $7,500. Prostitution is an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to 2 years in prison and a fine of up to $6,250.

Dubuque was so boring when I was there. No massage parlors, legit ones only downtown. Strip joints in East Dubuque wasn't that great either and the area is shady. As for CL ads, the girls wanted $$$ for a date, I thought I was in NYC or Chicago and they weren't the $$$ caliber girls.

A 37-year-old Cedar Rapids woman has been arrested for prostitution.

Shortly after 1 pm Sunday Debra was arrested at an unnamed motel in Coralville by the Johnson County Sheriffs department.

According to complaint reports, during a prostitution investigation officers from the sheriff's office and Iowa City Police Department contacted a woman in Cedar Rapids. Debra agreed to send a young girl to a motel to meet with an undercover officer posing as John. Although many guys may not find 37 years old young.

When Debra arrived at the agreed location there was a conversation in which she agreed to perform sex acts with the undercover officer in exchange for money.

Debra was charged Tuesday with prostitution, an aggravated misdemeanor. She remained in the Johnson County Jail on a $5, 000 cash-only bond. Prostitution is punishable by up to two years in prison and $6250.

Police arrested an Arizona woman after she allegedly admitted to soliciting herself.

21 year old [Name(s) deleted by Admin] of El Dorado, Ariz., was charged with prostitution.

She is being held at the Washington County Jail on a $5, 000 cash-only bond.

According to reports, police conducted a knock and talk at a Coralville Motel 6 around 9:30 pm Monday. [Name(s) deleted by Admin] foolishly allowed the police to look through her cell phone, and they found various text messages in relation to sexual acts, police said.

Not relaising that it is best to say nothing when talking to police, [Name(s) deleted by Admin] then admitted to soliciting herself on more than one occasion in exchange for sex at Motel 6 and the Big 10 Inn. The cost of the act was $60.

Also arrested was a 17 year old girl from South Carolina. The girl whose identity was not released was transported to the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center. She was also charged with prostitution.

Prostitution is an aggravated misdemeanor, generally punishable by up to two years in prison and a $5, 000 fine.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This report was edited to remove the names of persons who were arrested from the report.

I want to say this carefully so no one gets the wrong idea here, but if you think about it, posting the names of people who have been arrested is somewhat heartless and really just helping the police in their efforts to embarrass these people.

Among the women in Mary Jane's stable: her own daughter, police said.

Police arrested Mary Jane Wednesday for a Sept. 29, 2009, incident in Coralville. While conducting a prostitution investigation, an undercover officer contacted Mary Jane, according to a criminal complaint. Police said Mary Jane's number previously had been given to officers.

Mary Jane agreed to send a young woman to meet with the undercover officer, police said. According to police, Mary Jane sent her daughter. Mary Jane's daughter, 37 year old Debra Kay, was charged with pandering.

Police said Mary Jane has admitted to running a prostitution ring for years. According to court records, Mary Jane was convicted of prostitution in 1994. Records also show she was charged with pimping in 2008. She received a five-year suspended prison sentence and three years probation.

Also arrested Tuesday was 21 year old Heather of Rock Island, Ill. Police said that while conducting a prostitution project in Feb. 8, 2008, officers contacted Heather after she placed an ad on the Internet. After arriving at an agreed location in Coralville, Heather and an undercover officer had a conversation about the sex acts she would perform in exchange for money.

Heather was charged with prostitution. Johnson County Sheriff Det. Sgt. Kevin Kinney said Heather and Mary Jane were involved in two separate incidents and just happened to get arrested on the same day.

Mary Jane and Heather remain in custody at the Johnson County Jail. Mary Jane's bond has been set at $5,000 cash-only. Heather's bond has been set at $5,000 cash only.

Was up near East Dubuque last night and decided to head into town to visit the strip clubs. Was there a couple years ago and there were several to choose from. Now there are none that were open. When I was there before one of the dancers said they would soon be closing earlier, due to changes in liquor laws, but I do not think they meant 7PM. Have read on here about how there used to be many very fun ones there, might have just been a closed on Monday thing but I would not make any effort to return to town for the strip clubs.

Police said four women rented a hotel room in Coralville for the purpose of using it to perform sex acts for money.

Coralville officers responded to the Baymont Inn at 7 pm on Thursday for a report of suspicious activity. Police said the four women admitted to placing ads online to meet men at the hotel for sex.

The women were:

• Erica E. Kauer. 19, of Silvis, Ill.

Cross-posting in both IL & IA since technically in Illinois but nearest "big" city is Burlington in Iowa.

Gulfport IL that at one time had a dozen or so strip clubs so I have been told now has none. Had to spend a couple of days in Monmouth and got bored Wed night.
