Been a lurker, discovered this sight by looking up Dreamway in Cicero, IL on the web, many people here remembered the place. I found it in the 90's, moved away overseas, came back, and bam -- it was shut down. Always thought it was like something out of a time warp, the place was fun, and I never had a bad experience. My favorite girl there was Slim, she was fun and always treated me well.

Anyway, living in NW Ind now, and started following the threads and seeing for myself. I don't like the sw scene, too risky, look at the CPD website for all the guys caught, they post their picture on the web now and I want no part of that. So I checked out shags and it reminded me a bit of dreamway. Went in a few times and the girls were ok, nothing special, then I met pa?is and arranged a hookup over a weekend. Perfect girl, nice, clean -- the most important thing for me -- and she was relaxed and fun. A 7 maybe on looks, but a 10 on personality.

Anyway guys, thanks for the info, if I see anything I'll post it here, it should be a two way street. I've been to honeys and a few other places, but not much action there. I'll try black cherry one day to see, but for awhile I'm going to stick with pa?is, it's easy and I know what I get.

Well the new talent have driven the prices ridiculously high. The new prices quoted from new gals are insane. Just when I was about to leave I see Jada. Many here know she was the finest of the gals that used to work there. We spoke of the insane prices and she even says that business has been sucking lately and not in a literal sense either. Monday nite I was kind of bored so I had three vodka martinis and off to Sun Spa I went. Paid the door fee, was met by Ann, table shower wasn't that great. Massage was only so so, then on the flip was asked what else I wanted. I asked what was available she told me, but I wasn't going to pay 60. For hand shake or $. I try to keep the cost down as much as I can. I try to stick to simular prices, but have paid alittle more at times, but have also walked, with out extras. Was driving by Melton road the past two days and noticed that there were alot of cars in the adult entertainment center both nights. This place is located just south of Honey's and The Rising Sun. Does anyone know the deal with this place?

There seems to also be alot more people going to Honey's lately. I used to drive past there at midnight and the lot would be half empty. Now it seems to be packed. Have got to go there soon to see what is happening over there.

The talent at Industrial Strip has been lacking lately. Most of my favorites there have left so I am trying to figure out some new, good clubs to go to.

Ok, thanks for the directions. Wen't to Barley and for $$ had a fab. meal with all the CFS fixins plus a awesome msg. that was as good as any given by a physical therapist. I did not negotiate the menu with Tammy (?) who was very pretty, about 40, and a hard body. The mamma san was loads of fun. She dragged me into the TS by the one eyed worm and was a great sport. Very laid back place. The provider was also nice but not much in terms of conversation. She was into the MPCFS but was a little rushed. Now, the massage was not rushed and this first visit to the Barley was better than the new PS in East Chicago, but not as good as the old PS was last summer/year. I have been to DeJaVu in Lake Station and the girls downstairs in the nude section are young and very hot, but man, they are distant in private dance mode - nothing like other DejaVu's across the country or Hustler clubs. So, I wonder which of the local places have the following:

If you're looking for quality grinding action, go to Industrial Strip in Hammond off of the Skyway. It's full contact and you can touch anywhere you like, except for there, but I've never got any take out. It's pricey, but the women are hot.

I'll let others report on Honey's and Shangri-la's service, as I went to those places once and did not like anything I saw. Plus, IIRC, the reports were pretty vague on what's available -- well, let's just say inconsistent. As for Industrial Strip, yes, you can touch everything except pet the kitty, but they were these annoying band-aid sticky things over their breasts. It's worse than doing it w/a condom :)

Like with most strip clubs, you can bargain. You can bargain to take those sticky things off (be prepared to pay $.5$). They (the strippers) always complain that it's such a hassle to put back on, but I highly disagree. My last time there, I got to suck me some breastss, but this was on a slow night, closing the place down.

IMO, Deja Vu both sucks and blows in terms of contact (and, not in any way that can be considered "good"), no matter the city. Hustler is just as bad, but San Fran Hustler is probably the best of the three (I heard take out is possible, but I doubt it). Of all the national ones that I know of, Spearmint Rhino is the best (though more SW than national) and Scores is a very, very distant second (though mostly NE). In terms of contact, nationally, it's really the Rhino, and whatever Las Vegas clubs have ownership in CA, TX, and GA (I've heard that NC has some good contact, but didn't get a chance to partake last time I was there).

What are your recommendations for strip clubs in MI????Lansing MI has the best DeJaVu out there. At least on my two visits this year I had dances from tall hot blondes with nice natural busts (early 20s) who were very physical and sweet no pressure girls. I am not talking about any "extras" but just good clean fun. Also there is a strip club (I think it has a Greek name?) in Detroit near Greektown suite hotel, Casino, and the Monorail (walking distance) where there are some very hot Vegas type girls who are very physical if a bit money hungry. I have crossed the bridge to Windsor a few times, but the reports on the boards cover that stuff pretty well where a $20.00 CAN dance is only about $10 USD if the rates are right.

For me IS is nothing more than a tease and I've not been back in more than a year. I've had luck in several of the other clubs (Pandora's, Wiggles, etc) but that's after long hours of making myself a known commodity.

The bookstore is an absolute sure thing, but you're not exactly seeing strippers there.

Club O is known for very good times during the day, and I've had takeout served a few times as well.

One of the best in Indiana is Hip Hugger in Kokomo. Good looking ladies. They will take the time to sit an talk. Best of all dances are $10.00, with contact. Opens at noon no cover during the daytime and reasonable drink prices. My two cents....I know it's not NW IN but it's worth the drive.

Club O is at the Halsted exit off 294 (Tristate tollway). Been there a number of times. I personnlly think it is the best strip club I have been at. Lot's of hot ladies. Goog laps too.

Area spas targeted in raid

Local and federal authorities stormed massage parlors and residences to execute search warrants in a broad sweep Wednesday that encompassed the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana.

Neighbors of the some of the targeted Northwest Indiana massage parlors said it wouldn’t take much guessing to figure out what police were investigating.

“Everyone knows what goes on there,” said Jonathan Doffin, who witnessed the raid of Barley Spa, 9636 Forrest Drive in Highland.

The spa, which neighbors say regularly hosts patrons who would ring a doorbell to gain entry, sat dark Thursday evening.

Doffin, who works at Witham’s gas station next door to the spa, said he was visiting his grandmother in the apartment complex across the street when “cop cars flew in and raided the place.”

Barley Spa was one of four massage parlors and one

residence hit in Northwest Indiana. The raids also included four residences in Illinois.

The U.S. Department of Justice issued a news release Thursday announcing the raids had taken place, but declined to release further details.

Ryan Holmes, spokesman for U.S. Attorney Joseph Van Bokkelen, declined to verify there had been arrests in the raids.

“It is Department of Justice policy not to comment on ongoing investigations,” Holmes said.

According to the Department of Justice release, the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Internal Revenue Service, United States Postal Inspection Service and the United State Marshall Service participated in the raids.

Representatives of the FBI and the IRS would not discuss their agencies’ roles in the raids.

Doffin said one night last October he saw a car that appeared to be staking out the gas station. He became concerned he might be the target of a robbery attempt, so he called police.

“They (police) said not to worry, they were watching the Barley Spa,” Doffin said. “I couldn’t believe they told me that.”

Neighbors to the Singapore Spa, 2034 45th St. in Highland, were relieved police were finally doing something about a place they’ve long suspected harbors illegal activity.

A business owner nearby, who wished not to be identified, said the spa routinely stayed open past midnight, with only male patrons frequenting.

“You tell me what kind of spa has callers coming at that hour,” she said.

She said a customer, a black woman, came in once and said she had gone to Singapore Spa hoping to get a massage.

“She said they refused to serve her, and she thought it was because she was black.”

“I told her it wasn’t her race they were discriminating against.”

Connie Ralston, who also works in the strip mall where Singapore is located, said she witnessed the raid.

About 6 p.m. Wednesday, she saw several officers wearing emblazoned jackets, some bearing the letters “FBI,” others with “IRS-CID,” run up to the spa’s front door.

She said they carried several large storage containers inside. She didn’t see anyone being taken out, but she said she didn’t look in back, where a rear door is located.

Also included in the raid was the Toyko Tanning and Day Spa, 2303 45th St. in Highland. The stand-alone building neighbored by professional business offices sat dark Thursday evening.

Approximately 150 officers participated in the sting, which also included Sun Spa, 1064 Joliet St. in Dyer, and a residence at 2250 Cook Court in Schererville. Sites in Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines, Chicago and Gurnee in Illinois also were targeted.

Three charged in spa raids

HAMMOND | A day after a raid on several local spas, charges were filed Thursday against at least three people in federal court. At least one of the cases involves allegations of transporting people for sexual trafficking.

A number of closed hearings -- prosecutors wouldn't say how many -- preceded an open charging hearing for three women at U.S. District Court in Hammond.

Prosecutors released only the criminal complaints against the three. The affidavits, or documents setting forth the evidence justifying the charges, were sealed at the request of federal prosecutors.

Federal prosecutor said the hearings were closed because the government does not want to jeopardize a continuing investigation.

U.S. Magistrate Judge, who presided over the hearings, requested two translators be scheduled for the bond hearings Tuesday because of the large number of defendants.

Dyer Assistant Police Chief said his department has worked with federal authorities for about two years on the case involving Sun Spa, 1604 Joliet St., Dyer. It was one of nine locations where federal and local police served search warrants Wednesday.

The women charged in open court on Thursday were of Duluth, Ga.; of Elk Grove Village, Ill., and of 2250 Cook Court, Schererville. A Korean interpreter was present to translate for all three women. The immigration status of the women wasn't released by the government.

Both Hyun and Young asked that Rodovich appoint attorneys for them. Thompson said she wanted to hire her own attorney and would attempt to have the attorney present for her bond hearing.

Thompson was charged at request of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service with promoting or facilitating prostitution by traveling in interstate commerce and use of the U.S. mail or communication facility to promote or facilitate prostitution. If convicted, Thompson would face a maximum prison sentence of five years and a maximum fine of $250,000.

Hyun was charged at the request of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with transporting individuals for sexual trafficking, which carries a potential maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a maximum fine of $250,00.

She also was charged with travel in interstate commerce with the intent to manage or facilitate prostitution, which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years and a maximum fine of $250,000 if convicted.

Young was charged at the request of the IRS with travel in interstate commerce with the intent to facilitate or carry on prostitution. If convicted, Young would face a maximum prison term of five years and a maximum fine of $250,000.

Would-be customers still arriving at raided spa

No one told three men who arrived within 20 minutes of each other Friday at the Sun Spa in Dyer that the business had closed since a federal prostitution raid two days earlier.

One by one between 1 and 1:20 p.m., the three men arrived -- two by pickup truck, one by bicycle. They peered through the glass and jiggled the spa's door handle.

The doors at the Sun Spa, 1064 Joliet St., Dyer; Tokyo Tanning and Day Spa, 2303 45th St., Highland; Barley Spa, 9636 Forrest Drive, Highland; and Singapore Spa, 2034 45th St., Highland, have been locked since a federal raid Wednesday in relation to a prostitution case in which three women have been charged so far.

One man, who arrived in a white pickup, lowered his sun glasses on his nose and tried the door handle before heading back to his truck.

"I was just driving by and saw the sign and thought I would stop in to see what kind of services they had," the man said.

When told that federal agents had served warrants on the business, the man declined further comment and drove away.

Another man, who arrived about 1:15 p.m. at the Sun Spa on Friday, denied he had ever visited the business before and was just "checking it out" based on an advertisement he had seen in a newspaper. He claimed to be from Hebron, declined to give his name and drove away in a silver Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

A third man, who arrived on a white bicycle, quickly peddled away when approached by a Times reporter asking questions about the spa.

a sales representative in the cellular telephone store next door to the Sun Spa, said that since Wednesday, he and his co-workers have seen a steady stream of men trying to open the door of the Sun Spa, then leaving when they realize it is locked.

And when the business was open, he only saw men going in and out of the spa, Tucker said.

"I always thought it was pretty strange," he said. "I never knew that many guys went to spas."

Federal authorities are keeping sealed most details pertaining to the case.

However, three women have been charged: on a count of promoting or facilitating prostitution; , on a count of traveling in interstate commerce to facilitate or carry out prostitution; and charges of sexual trafficking and managing or facilitating prostitution.

Chicago man, whose residence was searched by federal agents Wednesday in relation to the case, said he has had business dealings with Thompson, brokering an investment for her in a now-closed sushi restaurant in downtown Chicago. Choi said he is a real estate agent in Chicago.

But he said he was unaware of any dealings Thompson had with spas.

Choi said he was not told why federal agents searched his residence, 6034 N. Wolcott Ave., Apt. 3N, for seven hours, taking credit cards and other materials from the apartment.

In addition to the four region spas and the homes of Choi and Thompson searched by federal and local law enforcement Wednesday, the U.S. attorney's office in Hammond also has reported that three Illinois addresses in Buffalo Grove, Des Plaines and Gurnee were searched in relation to the case.

I went to PS today and you guessed it there was a closed sign in the window. It appears that all of Lake Co. is shut down. Porter Co. is still alive and well and advertising in the paper but I am sure they are being very careful. In memory of the casualties that were taken this past week I thought we should all do something. I am thinking of tying yellow ribbons around the door handles of the closed spas or voice of the people in the papers or whatever else my friends might suggest. I dont feel like just sitting here and letting our freedoms be taken away for a victimless crime. We all know its really all about the tax free money being had, always follow the money. I also often go for a walk with the kids down Broadway in Gary to catch a show at the Palace Theater or a big band show at Memorial Auditorium, then walk home at 1 am to our Frank Lloyd Wright home just west of City hall. There are gangs, but these gangs of men spend the evening cleaning up litter on the streets. When our friends come from out of town they stay at the Shereton in downtown Gary.

Prostitution raid details revealed
March 2, 2006

Five women were arrested on sex and drug charges after their Korean massage parlor was raided in Maryland 12 years ago. The case was closed three years later because the U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute, said FBI Special Agent Michelle Crnkovich in Baltimore.

Now, one of the women from that raid more than a decade ago has resurfaced in Schererville and is being charged with nearly identical offenses in Hammond’s federal court.

The woman, allegedly working in Maryland at Osaka Express, a Korean massage parlor where police said sex was being sold.

Using the same alias, Mack now resides in Schererville and was arrested for her alleged involvement in a prostitution ring while she was working at Sun Spa, 1064 Joliet St., Dyer, and Singapore Spa, 2034 45th St., Highland.

She was charged by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service with promoting or facilitating prostitution by traveling in interstate commerce and use of the U.S. mail or communication facility to promote or facilitate prostitution.

The criminal affidavit with details of her profession was sealed to protect an ongoing investigation, but is expected to be open to the public today.

Mack’s previous charges were related to a possible interstate prostitution ring, and she was facing a deportation proceeding at the time, according to published reports.

Mack was released Tuesday with an electronic bracelet when the judge determined she had enough ties to the Northwest Indiana community to stay in the area. Her arraignment is scheduled for March 22.

Young of Elk Grove Village, Ill., also was charged in connection with the Dyer prostitution ring and also was released with an electronic bracelet, but she has no criminal record, according to her attorney, James Foster.

And since his client’s record is so clean, he wants to make sure there is no spillover.

“Everybody is always afraid of the spillover affect,” Foster said. “People get joined with other persons all the time. If there is a danger of a spillover, the court is supposed to do anything they can to prevent a spillover.”

Those measures would include separate trials, keeping Mack’s past out of the evidence presented to the court or submitting the evidence with precautionary instruction, Foster said.

The third woman who allegedly worked with Mack in Schererville is also battling a rocky past, according to U.S. Magistrate, who chose to detain Hyun because she had pending arrests and doesn’t have significant ties to the region.

Stewart, who is defending Hyun, said she doesn’t have any criminal convictions, but is being investigated as part of an extensive prostitution ring that operates throughout the country.

She was working with a Korean interpreter to explain her situation, and she plans to plead not guilty when she is arraigned later this month, Stewart said.

Alleged spa prostitution a last resort for workers

The Korean massage parlors raided last week for prostitution employed recent immigrants desperate for money, turning to prostitution as a last resort to survive, according to the affidavit.

Many times, they were brought to the United States after paying as much as a $40,000 smuggling fee, and were told about high paying waitressing jobs or upscale factories.

The realities were very different, according to Poulter, special agent for the IRS and a lead investigator in the Highland and Dyer raids that resulted in the arrests of three Korean woman.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Collins is investigating sexual services allegedly offered in the Indiana spas, as well as connected Korean parlors in Rockford, Ill., Kentucky and San Francisco.

“We are still knee deep in the investigation,” Collins said.

Those who came on their own realized they couldn’t financially survive by waitressing, and their limited English prevented them from seeking other work. Others who came to the country as military wives, soon realized the lonely life of an immigrant with no ties to their homeland, according to court documents. Many of these women started working as hostesses in upscale clubs, where they met men who paid them for sex which usually took place in nearby hotels.

By the time they reached their mid-20s, Poulter said, the women became too old for that type of work, which is when they would transition to working in massage parlors which allegedly doubled as prostitution houses.

“The Korean women generally are not forced into prostitution by a higher controlling party,” the affidavit said. “They are removed from their families and the Korean subculture in the U.S. has an established business unit where they can work.”

Those established businesses, such as Singapore Spa, Tokyo Tanning & Day Spa and Barley Spa in Highland, and Sun Spa in Dyer, paid their employees up to $2,000 a day.

Despite their large salaries however, the women appeared to work long hours. According to court documents, the spas typically serviced 10-30 customers a day, with each customer paying an average of $200 for each visit.

But early investigations involving undercover policemen determined that in the Indiana massage parlors, customers could purchase sex acts ranging from $60 ... to $140 for full sexual intercourse. If the customers wanted the women to be naked while performing the acts, it could cost an additional $20, according to the affidavit.

The activities at the spas appear to have halted since the raids, with calls to some of the Northwest Indiana parlors going unanswered. A man who answered the phone listed in court documents for Mack said she did not reside there, and he said he did not know anything about massage parlors.

It is still unknown however, how much the closure of the four regional spas will affect the long-term prostitution activity. Various anonymous men posting on a sex-message board about sexual massages lamented the recent police activities. They warned one another to stay away from the alleged prostitutes right now, especially in Hammond, where they posted comments about police who appear to be targeting the area.

I have seen these types of reports off and on for many years. Things go slow for awhile and then return to normal. What is the alternative for many of these girls? Work the rest of their lives for minimum wage? Or maybe they should just apply for jobs as brain surgeons or Fortune 500 CEOs. Maybe the police busting them will offer them jobs. Undercover officers say they were offered sex

HAMMOND | Undercover law enforcement officers said they were solicited for sex at three of four health spas they raided last week.

The U.S. attorney's office disclosed details of investigations conducted by the Dyer Police Department, the Highland police and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service at the Sun Spa, 1064 Joliet St., Dyer; Barley Spa, 9636 Forrest Drive, Highland; and Singapore Spa, 2034 45th St., Highland.

Police also raided those and the Tokyo Tanning and Day Spa, 2303 45th St., Highland, last week.

The government has charged three Korean women with prostitution-related crimes.

The government also has been questioning large numbers of spa employees who are described as material witnesses and needed a Korean translator Tuesday when brought into U.S. District Court here.

Government investigators kept their investigations secret until U.S. District Court Magistrate Andrew Rodovich said they had to disclose enough information for him to base a decision on whether to detain or release the defendants on bond.

Hyun remains behind bars while Rodovich released Thompson and Young on bond and under an electronic surveillance program.

Affidavits the U.S. attorney unsealed Wednesday indicate Thompson was the owner of Barley Spa and paid bills for the other three. It indicates Thompson opened Singapore Spa in spring 2003 and the Barley Spa the same year, under the name Cozy Spa.

Young is identified as a manager of the Barley Spa and Hyun as manager of the Singapore Spa.

The affidavit indicates Highland police began undercover operations at Barley Spa on Oct. 11. An undercover officer supplied with money visited and asked for a massage.

He said he was met at the front of the spa by a woman in her 50s who opened a door to an inner room and instructed him to undress. He met then met a female Asian in her 30s named "Penny," whom he paid $70 for a 10-minute sauna and shower.

The officer said Penny then asked if he would like anything more. She made hand signals to describe the sex acts and their prices, ranging from $40 to $140 for full intercourse. The officer paid Penny $100, but he didn't engage in sex, the affidavit said.

Undercover agents said they also were solicited for sex by a "Jennifer" on Oct. 13 and by "Kee" on Feb. 15 at Singapore Spa, a "Gigi" and "Sunny on Oct. 13 at Sun Spa, and an "Anna" on Feb. 15 at Sun Spa.

Dyer police conducted surveillance of Sun Spa in Dyer between December and February and saw only male patrons from a number of different states visit.

Officer went through the spas' garbage, finding used condoms as well as a document linked to a company that is a known supplier of condoms to Asian spas, police said. They also said in the affidavit they found what appeared to be a daily log sheet of customers.

The affidavit also refers to several other people whose names have been deleted and who Assistant U.S. Attorney Sue Collins described as potential targets of the continuing investigation.

shamefaced as the sleazy details were aired in front of his mother, a once-proud pimp from the south suburbs pleaded guilty thursday in a federal prostitution case likely to land him in prison for more than a decade.
david "super dave" phillips, 38, admitted he recruited a pair of **** runaways from aunt martha's group home for troubled youth in glenwood and sent them across the state line to turn tricks in indiana. those two girls joined a stable of prostitutes phillips kept in mobile homes in lynwood and sauk village.

according to an fbi affidavit, the two girls — ages 14 and 16 — were introduced to a half-dozen of phillips' prostitutes at the lynwood trailer: all six had a version of the name "david" tattooed on their bodies, and three said they were pregnant by phillips. after that, phillips told the girls they needed to be interviewed.

"as it turned out," assistant u.s. attorney bart huff said in court thursday, "the interview consisted of the defendant ordering the girls to have sex with another man and then later, himself."

the girls, eventually nicknamed mahogany and lil' mama by the pimp, started being sent out on calls throughout the south suburbs and northwest indiana with phillips' older prostitutes, according to the plea agreement. they were provided with a car, gas money and condoms — and ordered to turn over their earnings to phillips when they returned to the trailers.

when phillips first was interviewed by cook county sheriff's investigators, he admitted he was a pimp and boasted of making between $10,000 and $15,000 a month, according to court papers. as part of thursday's plea agreement, the government will move to seize a mercedes-benz used in the prostitution ring as well as a white cadillac limousine.

one of the dozens of homemade videotapes found inside the sauk village trailer allegedly shows phillips lording over several prostitutes working at a truckstop near gary — and commenting on camera that "prostitution is the solution," and that "pimpin' and hoin' is the best thing going." another tape shows one of his prostitutes fanning him with $100 bills, according to the affidavit.

"pimp some tonight," phillips told the woman. "i need some benjamins."

for the juvenile sex-trafficking conviction, phillips faces a recommended prison sentence of between 11 and 14 years under federal guidelines. sentencing was scheduled for may 19.

another alleged south side pimp, victor powell, is awaiting trial here on similar though slightly harsher charges. powell — known as mr. cream — is accused of housing prostitutes, at least one of them under 18, in a matteson hotel by day and forcing them to turn tricks on an infamous stretch of 47th street in the city by night.

phillips, in his written plea agreement, said the runaways told him they were 17 but admitted he suspected they were younger. he insists he didn't know how much younger.

dressed in the orange jumpsuit of the federal lockup where he's been held without bail for more than a year, phillips at one point balked when huff rattled off the admissions in the plea agreement.

"i'm not saying i'm not guilty," phillips said as he glanced over his shoulder at a small knot of family members in the courtroom gallery. "but i ain't guilty of everything he said. ... i didn't know the girl was ****.

"it's just really messed up. it's crazy."

u.s. district judge joan lefkow quickly halted the session and told phillips he couldn't plead guilty without admitting he broke the law. after a two-hour break and a chance to talk with his lawyer, phillips returned and went through with the guilty plea.

"he was embarrassed that these things were coming out in front of his family," defense attorney shannon lynch explained to the judge, pointing out that phillips' mom was present.

"i was feeling bad," phillips added as he again looked back at his family. "embarrassed, too."

Citing public pressure, Spotsylvania County's sheriff said yesterday that he has suspended the practice of allowing detectives to receive sexual services during prostitution investigations, a technique that brought the quiet Virginia exurb attention from across the nation and around the world.

"As Sheriff, I understand the feelings and concerns the citizens of this county have expressed," Sheriff Howard D. Smith said in a statement. "And I empathize with those feelings."

Four days after the county's tactics were reported in The Washington Post, Smith said "the public's expressed response," which he did not characterize, persuaded him to curtail the investigative approach while his staff reviews it and prepares a report with recommendations.

Spotsylvania detectives on assignment to crack down on prostitution in county massage parlors visited Moon Spa three times in January and paid for massages, baths and sexual acts on four occasions, court documents show. On one occasion, they left a $350 tip, records show.

Smith and William F. Neely, the county's top prosecutor, said the sexual acts were necessary because the masseuses had poor English skills and would have been unable to make clearly spoken offers of sex for money. Such offers and evidence that more than touching occurred are needed to make a case under Virginia law, they said. Only unmarried detectives were assigned to the cases, Smith said.

The sheriff's suspension of the practice was applauded by Henry "Hap" Connors Jr., chairman of the county's Board of Supervisors. Connors, who had asked Smith to stop the practice, said he hopes detectives will now employ "more appropriate" means of investigating prostitution.

"I think the sheriff has made the right decision in suspending and putting an end to these tactics," Connors said yesterday. "I respect the job that he's doing but just disagree with these tactics."

Several legal and police experts said few, if any, law enforcement agencies allow sexual contact in prostitution investigations. Charles J. Key Sr., a retired Baltimore police lieutenant who trains officers and federal agents across the country, said, "If you allow officers to go through with the act, they've violated the law."

In a statement posted on his Web site Thursday, Neely blasted the "so-called experts" quoted in news reports. He said Spotsylvania's investigative method was used because authorities wanted to net not just prostitutes, but also their bosses -- who keep some of the proceeds collected by the masseuses in exchange for sexual acts.

"How is a prosecutor supposed to prove a case against the massage parlor madam and its owners if the police officer arrests the hooker before the marked money paid to her for sex can move into the madam's hands??" Neely asked.

He said the county's previous investigations involving detectives who paid for sex led to two massage parlors closing and a madam and a spa owner pleading guilty.

"Thus, we are left with the fundamental moral question of all criminal justice enforcement -- what is worse for our community: Organized prostitution and all of the crime which is proven to arise from it -- or a few police officers engaging in illicit sex acts in order to ultimately drive such crime from their jurisdiction & to better protect their community??" Neely asked. He said that he and Smith would not be swayed by the "naive media & political hysterics."

Neely did not respond to a message asking for comment yesterday.

Smith said he would not comment beyond his three-sentence statement. In an article published yesterday in the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, the sheriff cited the earlier investigations, which were conducted before he took office and did not create such a firestorm.

"I thought I was doing the right thing," Smith told the paper.

Some of the employees were in charge of advertising, licensing, hiring, banking and paying the bills. Others were paid to come into work each day and do their jobs to the customer’s satisfaction.

At the end of the day, prostitution is just a business.

A federal indictment of seven owners and operators of four spas outlined the day-to-day operations of alleged prostitution ring that operated within Northwest Indiana and Illinois massage parlors.

To attract customers, the spas advertised and offered $20 coupons in the sports section of the Chicago Sun-Times and the Northwest Indiana Times, according to the indictment. Defendants Sun Cha Thompson, James Choi and an unindicted co-conspirator paid $24,089 from 2003 to 2005 to the Sun-Times via a Fifth Third account to promote the business.

When customers arrived, they were charged $70 for the basic massage and shower. If they brought the coupon, the services were $50. Like most businesses, the spas accepted credit cards, increasing the federal jurisdiction in the case. Once the fee was collected by the manager, or the “Mama San,” the customer was invited into the shower. After the shower, he was given a massage, at which point the working girls allegedly offered extra sexual services, according to court documents. Those services were paid directly to the prostitutes as a tip.

Federal officials say the women lived in the spa and were fed by the owners. Ok Sun Mun worked as a “kitchen woman” providing food, toiletries and condoms to the women working at the Sun Spa in Dyer. Others working at the spa were in charge of the lease.

While the employers and employees operated a successful business, the actual transactions were illegal, violating various federal laws.

The four spas were raided in February by a joint task force of federal agents with the Highland and Dyer police.

In one indictment, Sun Cha Thompson, 51, of Schererville; James C. Choi, 50, of Chicago; Bok Ja Young, 46, of Elk Grove Village, Ill.; Niculae Tudor, 49, Gurnee, Ill.; and Ok Sun Mun, 57, of North Wales, Pa., were each indicted for allowing their businesses to be used as a front for prostitution.

They each owned or operated the Singapore Spa, 45th Street Highland; the Barley Spa, Forest Drive Highland; and the Sun Spa, Joliet Street, Dyer. They are also charged with concealing illegal aliens and enticing them across state lines for prostitution.

In a second indictment, Kum Cha Meyer, 57, of Des Moines, and her daughter, Jennifer Meyer, 22, of Chicago, were charged with similar offenses for operating the Tokyo Tanning and Day Spa, 45th Street in Highland.

Dyer and Highland police began the original investigation before federal agents stepped in last year. Highland Police Chief Peter Hojnicki and Dyer Police Chief Donald E. Parker said each of the spas has been shut down after the raids.

“We put in a lot of manpower, a lot of resources, but in the end it was worth it because we rid two communities of a cancer,” Parker said.

No charge, no freedom for sex-parlor workers

Two weeks ago, Ying Hi Lee was desperate to find her friend.

The last thing Lee heard from her was that she was working at a massage parlor in Indiana. Her friend didn’t know the name of the place where she worked, but knew it was near a busy highway.

Because the two spoke regularly, Lee became worried when several weeks passed without communication.

She became increasingly concerned as more time passed. But Lee, who lives in New York, finally received word there had been a major bust of massage parlors in Northwest Indiana where prostitution was allegedly occurring.

Lee assumed if her friend had been arrested, she could find a record of her arrest and discover where she was being held. But several checks of local jails and federal prisons produced nothing. It appeared no records of her friend existed.

Two weeks later, the Post-Tribune learned that Lee’s friend is, in fact, in custody. And records of her arrest exist, but the government is keeping them secret, although she and the other women nabbed in the busts have not been charged with any crime.

“I just want to know she’s OK,” Lee said. “I’m very worried for my friend.”

Last week, United States Attorney Joseph Van Bokkelen announced the indictments of six massage-parlor owners.

Doug Shaw, who is on defendant Bok Young’s defense team, said he doesn’t understand why the women are being held. But he wondered what the women must think of an American judicial system that keeps witnesses behind bars and lets defendants run free on bond.

Names of those indicted were announced, but Van Bokkelen’s office would only say that the women who worked for the defendants, picked up during the Feb. 24 raids, would not be charged with a crime.

Late last week, Van Bokkelen’s office refused to release details about the women, declining to say how many were arrested, where they were being detained, or the names of those who would be used as material witnesses.

Mary Hatton, Van Bokkelen’s spokeswoman, said the information must remain under wraps because the women are material witnesses, and are not United States citizens — an action described by attorneys as bizarre, especially for a case involving non-violent offenses.

A material witness is one whose testimony is considered not only relevant, but necessary to make a case.

Attorneys involved with the case have confirmed that seven women picked up during the raids remain in federal custody. Five of the women are at the Porter County Jail, while two others are at a halfway house in Michigan City.

Others, who are in the Unites States legally or are citizens, remain on house arrest under electronic surveillance.

According to Jerry Flynn, a federal public defender who, along with two other attorneys from his office, is representing four of the women, said the government is using a little-known and rarely used statute that allows material witnesses considered a flight risk to be detained until a deposition has been taken.

Having not been charged with any crimes, the women are not considered prisoners.

“The problem is, they are treated as if they are,” Flynn said. “There’s no doubt they are upset. But they’re confident we are doing everything we can to help them.”

Federal Statute 18 U.S.C. 3144, enacted in 1984, gives the government the right to detain a material witness in cases in which the government feels “it may become impracticable to secure the presence of the person by subpoena.”

They can remain in custody until a deposition has been taken.

Flynn said when the statute was enacted, Congress assumed depositions would be taken quickly. In this case, the government didn’t indict anyone for several weeks as the government completed its investigation. Depositions can’t be taken without a defendant.

And, because there are six defendants in the case and each attorney must schedule time for the deposition process, it could take several weeks.

“Meanwhile, the women languish in the Porter County Jail,” Flynn said.

Flynn said the government has agreed to cooperate in an arrangement that would place two of the women with an immigration organization that will help them obtain visas. Flynn expects them to be released no later than Monday.

A status hearing is scheduled for today, and Flynn plans to request the government unseal the court files.

In an affidavit included in the indictment, Carrie Poulter, special agent for the IRS, said prostitution is often the last resort for Korean women who pay up to $40,000 to be smuggled into the United States with the promise of a better life.

They are told of upscale waitressing jobs, or high-paying factory jobs to lure them. But when reality sets in, they turn to prostitution, desperate for money.

Attorneys close to the case wonder why the courts would enforce this rare statute in a case considered low-level by federal court standards.

Hatton would not confirm the statute used to detain the women, but conceded the case is unusual. She did not have an answer when asked how many times this statute has been used in the Northern Indiana district to detain witnesses.

Flynn believes all six defendants, who face charges of concealing illegal aliens and enticing them across state lines for prostitution, are free on bond.

Court records, most of which are sealed, confirm at least two are free.

Meanwhile, Flynn said, the witnesses have been escorted to each hearing in handcuffs and leg irons from the Porter County Jail. Attorney George Warren, from Lansing, Mich., who represents at least one of the women, could not be reached for comment.

While the United States Attorney’s Office has said the women are not facing criminal charges, Hatton said she could not comment on whether immigration charges would later be filed.

Lee, contacted by phone Tuesday, said the correct spelling of her friend’s name was likely lost in translation, but she confirmed one of the women in custody is her friend.

Lee has not yet been able to speak with her friend. But, “I am happy,” she said of finally knowing that her friend was not harmed

I was out and about, and decided to fill my time with a little stroll down RT 20 and on to Broadway. The time was 10:30pm as I started down RT 20. I stayed at the XXX Bookstore and watched the truck parking area for about 15min.....saw a few running about, but decided not to chance a pickup attempt (Cops hide all over in this area) So as I left sure enough 2 of Gary's finest come flying into the lot doing about 35 and almost hit me. I was glad I thought with my big head this time round. I still continued over to Broadway.

2 arrested in prostitution sting

HAMMOND | The honky tonks and B-joints have been gone for decades, yet some men continue to cruise the downtown area looking for prostitutes.

Two men found themselves behind bars Wednesday, caught in the year's first dragnet for those who seek illegal sexual gratification on the city's streets.

Led by Police Chief Brian Miller, a dozen uniformed officers -- plus one undercover in prostitute costume -- executed a noontime sting along State Line Avenue and Harrison Park.

"We get regular complaints from residents," Miller said. "And we'll continue to conduct these stings in response."

Portage resident Gregory Furman, 63, found himself under arrest on a charge of soliciting the undercover officer, and his tractor-trailer -- with its load of 14,000 pounds of steel -- was impounded.

"I've never done anything like this before in my life," Furman told police.

Anthony Luce, 49, of Chicago, had so little to say that he never quite finished his cash-for-sex proposal as he sat in his Cadillac DeVille, police said.

Police found Luce's blood-alcohol concentration to be 0.25, three times the legal limit. He was charged with operating while intoxicated and prostitution-related obstruction of traffic. A person is considered legally drunk in Indiana with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 and above.

Hammond police began monthly operations targeting streetwalkers' customers through the warm seasons last year in response to concerns from the mostly residential neighborhoods south of State Street.

Miller said he was pleased with Wednesday's actions because the undercover officer was not hurt and arrests were made.

"We will very carefully watch the patterns of streetwalkers and their customers, and tailor our stings to match their changing behaviors and areas of activity," he said.

Had some free time this last weekend to prowl. First checked out Ford and Chicago Heights along US30. Both dead, have been for some time. But since the weather gets nicer, you never know what will pick up again. Then drove over to Stateline in Hammond, dead here too (never had much luck here, and it sounds likje all the luck is bad anyway.) Then travelled over to E.C. around PMs, but this was dead too. They pulled johns over all night just West of Royal Inn and Shags and I watched and learned. Swooping in here is ill advised. Anything with brake lights showing gets scrutinized hard. I'd stick to the clubs.

I doubt there is anything we know about spas that Uncle Leo and Antie Cryme don't already have a clue on. Individual providers working out of their own location might be a different thing, but the popo are going to know about the spas as soon as we do. The proprietors are either greasing the wheels, or they are being careful, or they are not in business long.

I have been around awhile and the reports as of late are terrible. I have an idea to change that. I know of alot of spas that are still open in the area. I would like to post the names and what is available at each of them to help my fellow monger. Should I do this or just keep the boards quiet for protection agaisnt LE. Post or PM me and I will be happy to list the spas and what can be had so no one wastes their time or money. I may need some of your help if I dont know the full scope of services at some of the spas but for the most part I think I have been to all of them. I've monitored CL a bit in the past month. Be careful, there were some guys posting on CL about a crew in Cal City beating up and robbing customers. On ER, you might see reviews of some of the girls, and once in awhile somone will post a review right on CL.The problem with CL posted reviews is that the reviews expire there after a day or so, and some of them are pretty bad (wrong girl, fat girl, smelly, gross, and not the GFE listed).

I have not heard about this CalCity rip off, but some of the South Side/NWI numbers/girls on CL seem to have gang tatoos. I read that some of those gang-bangers burn tats on the girls. People should cut and paste reviews here if they seem legit. I saw one in Chicago and tried to paste it over there as a service. In NWI, there is one Big blond girl and a foot fetish lady in M-ville, and some big Afro-American girls that seem to have the gang tats. Seems like a good time to go to the strip clubs.

I havent had a chance to tell all of you that I got busted on a reconnaissance mission last Saturday evening. It was around 1am and I couldnt sleep so I hit the road. I drove down 20 and what did I see, it was Amber walking around the trailer park east of RI. I circled back and checked her out a second time and she looked as good the second time around. Ok, I love to live dangerously so I went back to RI today around 6:30. I boldly parked in front and asked a wsw if Amber was around. She went inside and got her. Drving down U.S. 20 last saturday around 8pm, what got my attention was the cop that pulled into the driveway of RI from ahead of me. As I kept driving, saw a semi- pull out of the same lot and a little further, saw a wsw.

I would like to give my fellow mongers to think about. I often see reports from AMPS, which ususally contain what was paid. The typical cost of a massage is $60/hour. Often, "extras" are offered for around $100-$140. Let's look at what you are getting since I used to do AMPs. You usually(not always) get a short crummy massage, often from a girls with a crummy attititude. The "extras" at best include a short session of sex on a too-small bed. I know there have been reports of guys having great experiences, but this is not the norm. Basically, guys are paying up to 2 bills for a short crummy massage and a short sex session. If you are going to pay that much, why not just get an escort and do it right and not risk a police raid on the spa? I say everyone avoid AMPs until prices come down and service improves. But I am willing to listen to opposing views. I personally have not been to an AMP for at least 7 or 8 years.

Ump, you obviously missed out on the AMPs in Rockford and the Peking. You get everything that you would get from a higher priced escort plus a table shower and pampering from a beautiful, young lady. Paying the big bucks for an escort is no guarantee of an experience any better than the AMP. The AMPs that are left do pale in comparison to the excellent AMPs of the past, so I have to agree that the current climate with AMPs don't warrant the prices that were paid to the best.

You can be entirely anonymous. Very little personal investment is involved.

Often the experience is between $ and $.2. On a cost/risk/benefit scale they fill a very important niche.

Yes there are reports of failure to receive service at an AMP; there are alos plenty of reports where escorts play games with multiple phone calls, no-shows or less-than-desired service.

Never have I heard of a patron at an AMP getting into trouble; only the providers are at risk.

The fact that they are in business shows that they fill a need and that they are patronized.

Last Monday.

Stay away !!! Just a warning. I have been going there for years but tonight was just bullshit there. One of the dancers tried picking a fight with me because I told her no on a dance.
