View Full Version : Banner Advertising Program

As I hope you have observed, I have decided to employ a limited amount of banner advertising to help support the cost of operating the Forum, which includes the cost of software, software upgrades, software programmers, domain name fees, bandwidth costs, server contracts, server administrator fees, server monitoring, firewall appliances, email accounts, etc.

I've selected a small number of what I believe are unique, quality websites that I hope you will find of interest. In addition, I would also be interested in hearing from any Forum Members who may have suggestions for other possible banner advertising candidates.

I've started this thread to discuss the Forum's banner advertising program. As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions. Thanks!

Jackson.

First of all and foremost, thanks for a great site !

From my own personal view, I think that it is a great idea. If i am interested i will click on it, if not, then I will just ignore it. Since it is helping with the maintenance of the site and it is for the benefit of all, I view it as another positive change to the site.

Before I sign off here, I am obligated to say the following. I am opposed to and would HATE for this site to eventually be a breeding ground for pop-ups, unsolicited 'accidental' links, and just over-commercialization in general.

Please keep the site simple as it currently still is. It is like an antique car. When someone installs a modern radio on an antique, it just deprives and depreciates the vehicle more than it gives back.

Hi Z3bondeye,

I understand completely. I despise java script re-directs, and I have no intention of cluttering up the site with popups or pop-unders.

Thanks,

Jackson

I also would love to have a banner up , straight banner links are poor revenue generating streams though unless you get a good quality target program especially now since Norton simply blocks them from even loading I never see them. I would however point out I have some good links that would proably make ya a ton of cash with the traffic you get Send me an e-mail and I will refer you to the program, again Thanks Jackson and any way I can help please just ask you do so much for us the least I could do is assist you in this. Jackson,

To be quite honest, I was surprised at the lack of ads when I first found/joined the site back before the split, and on the old domain name. I do remember a couple of ads on the front page, but not many, nor for too long. It was one of the reasons I joined the site. The lack of ads helped me decide the site was for real, and not just another of the many affiliate-type sites with nothing but ads pretending to be links, come-ons for pay sites, etc.

However, being a netizen as I am, I know how expensive running a site is, and that very few people can afford to have a big successful site just for their health and/or the bragging rights. You have to pay the bills somehow. Especially if you still want to have some cash for your own mongering pleasures. I have absolutely nothing against the ads. I think the current placement of the banner that I have seen thus far, (in the header/title of the page, and for Nude in Public) is fine, and I don't understand why anyone would be offended by it. I would hate to see, and I doubt you would do it, but would hate to see them start appearing inline with text, or worse yet, in between sections ala Yahoo Groups sometimes, or Mail.com's advertising that force you to say "no thanks" before getting to the pages you want to view.

Banner Ads at the top of the page, the bottom of the page, and possibly a skyscraper style ad in the left side navigation, would do nothing to detract from the site at all, and may help with your expenses.

I do like it when sites put a box effect with "advertisement" around their ads, much the same way Google does on paid searches though. I think it serves the surfer well.

I would much rather see the discreet, relevant banner ads on the USASG, than a paid membership requirement. I could understand it as well, and notice you are experimenting with it on the Intl. side of the site. I have nothing against paid memberships per se, but, like most people, love the free info we get now.

In summary, whatever is best for the Guide will be understandable by the vast majority of us here. We use the site, and don't want to see it go away, so will support you in these modest efforts to make it work, and keep or beloved Guide in existence.

Thanks for what you do.

Just .02 from me.

Wallie

Admin,

I do not mind your use of banner advertising on the site. I just don't like pop-up ads that take you all over the place and sometimes seem to have malware imbedded in the pages that pop-up when you click some banners. (I've been using pop-up blockers ever since I found the freeware ones back around 2001)

The banner you have up "Nude in Public" is large enough to be noticed when you first enter the site and small enough to not be a distraction. I've even clicked on the banner because it was something new on the site.

Stay safe,
OG

I'm with Wallie, I always thought there would be more commercial interest in the site.

I have no problem with the banner ads. So far they look good. I would also disapprove with the use of pop-ups, though that has been rejected, and since I use Mozilla it's not much of an issue.

Thanks Jackson for a great site. If you need help developing a media kit for use in selling ads, let me know.

Jackson,

It is clear to those of us who have been with you for awhile that you have invested huge amounts of your time and your money in making these websites work as amazingly well as they do. While we all appreciate your dedication to making a success of the sites, there is absolutely NO reason that you should bear all of the expenses out of your own pocket.

While some may raise privacy concers about accepting commercial advertisers on the site, I see no reasonable argument against doing what you have proposed. I hope that you will find that it eases the financial burden you have taken on so gracefully.

There seems to be a lack of support or maybe John's just disapprove and prefer to just not voice their opinions.

From that I guess that we can conclude that they majority does not mind the advertisting. The fact that there are not voicing their opinions inform me that they don't care. I transalate that as being a stamp of approval.

Take what you can Jackson, it is all the fruits of your labor. I find it candid that you would even create a thread to ask John's. You should just do what you please with the site. I know that I will suppport you in any way that I can. I have taken and given a gread deal to this site. Thanks A Million !!

Jackson,

As one of your most ardent fans I'm amazed at your accomplishments. You should do what is required to keep this operation afloat. The banners do not intrude. Have at it.

I don't want to come off like a jackass, but on the main page underneath the list of logged in members, "Forum Sponsors" is misspelled and it just kills me every time I see it. This may be nothing more than my OCD and I would never try to tell you how to run the site, but I can't think it is there intentionally and no one like being caught with their barn door open.

Thanks for all that you continue to do,
