The Supreme Court of the United States says no.

Just a week or two ago, the Supreme Court heard a case about a drug dealer someplace in the mid-west. I believe it was Indiana. He was arrested for transporting and selling some small quantities of heroin. I don't recall if it was a felony or not. I imagine it was.

The drug dealer's fine turned out to be quite small. I don't believe it reached 4 figures. HOWEVER, his vehicle, which the police decided to confiscate, had an estimated worth of $42,000.

So somehow, this case made it all the way to the Supreme Court. And the court ruled that the drug dealer was protected from heavy-handed punishement for a minor offense, by several articles in the Constitution. If you had an expensive vehicle. Or most any vehicle, confiscated when you were only charged with a misdomener (sp? You may want to look into this recent ruling.
