"Vitaros is the first topical ED treatment that clinically works in a matter of (5 to 6) minutes. Its topical application helps to reduce side effects and enables men who cannot take, or do not do well with the existing drugs, to have a patient-friendly alternative."

"Vitaros contains a previously marketed ED drug, known by the chemical name of alprostadil. Apricus Bio incorporated alprostadil with its NexACT delivery technology, resulting in a rapid and efficient topical delivery of the drug into the penis. When absorbed through the skin, alprostadil, a vasodilator, directly boosts blood flow, thereby causing an erection. Alprostadil is a well recognized drug for treating ED, and is currently marketed as an injectable drug or as a suppository inserted into the urethra."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostaglandin_E1

"Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) , known pharmaceutically as alprostadil, is sold in the United States as urethral suppositories and in injectable form. The suppositories are sold under the brand name MUSE. The injectable forms are Edex and Caverject. Two Phase III studies have been completed for Vitaros, and approval has been granted in Canada. Apricus Biosciences is seeking regulatory approval in Europe, South America, and other territories."

"Apricus's Vitaros is a topical cream using the active ingredient alprostadil bound to specially developed high absorption molecules that easily penetrate the skin. It is not a PDE-5 inhibitor and therefore works on very different premises compared to common therapies like Viagra. The cream is applied to the tip of the penis with a single-use applicator and the effect is reportedly noticeable within six minutes and the topical application is associated with fewer side-effects."

"Vitaros has been approved in Canada since 2010 and the company long maintained that it expected to start selling the cream in 2011. In January 2012 Apricus licensed Canadian marketing rights to Abbott Laboratories. They say that the drug will be available in Canada during 2012, but Abbott has not committed to a time frame."

"Vitaros, a topical cream has been approved in Canada and the specialty pharmaceutical company has also filed for marketing approval in the United States. The Canadian approval of the drug can only help its chances, however the FDA is often more stringent with clinical study results before allowing drugs to reach the USA Market".

Judging from the pictures of Vitaros packages with a needleless syringe, it would seem that it is intended to be injected into the urethra, not rubbed onto the penis. That is likely to improve the absorption. Since it is a gel, it should be less irritating than a Muse suppository.

Another good vasodilator is niacin. I did some experiments with rubbing on a niacin cream with poor results. One time I broke a 500 mg niacin tablet into pieces and placed a very small piece in my urethra. It burned like hell but actually did produce a good erection. It took about one week to heal the burned spot, but at least it proved to me that urethral placement is far more effective. Maybe a niacin gel like KY Intense injected into the urethra would work as well as Vitaros.

Apply Vitaros to the tip of the penis (meatus) within 5 to 30 minutes prior to attempting intercourse by following the instructions below:

1) Wash your hands before applying Vitaros. Remove the AccuDose container from the sachet by tearing fully across from the notched edge. Remove the AccuDose container from the sachet. Save the sachet for discarding the used AccuDose container later. Remove the cap from the tip of the AccuDose container. See Fig. 1.

2) Grasp the tip of the penis with one hand and gently manipulate to widen the opening of the penis. See Fig. 2 (Note, if you are not circumcised, first retract and hold the foreskin back prior to widening the opening of the penis).

3) Hold the barrel of the AccuDose container between your fingers and place the tip of the container over the opening of the penis and slowly (over 5-10 seconds) push down the plunger with your finger until all the cream is expelled from the AccuDose container barrel. Note: Do not insert the tip of the AccuDose container into the opening of the penis. See Fig. 3.

4) Hold the penis in an upright position for approximately 30 seconds in order to allow the cream to penetrate.
